When I was a little girl, my grandmother had all these little cards w/ illustrations of lovely girls wearing cute outfits and doing stuff like walking in the rain, playing cards, sitting at a cafe, hanging out on the floor with their poodle in their sexy nighty- and I remember thinking how glamorous they all were and how when I grew up and became a woman, I wanted to be beautiful and carefree like the girls in those drawings. But they had long thin legs, and tiny waists and I didn’t have those things. I was short and fat and had a belly and big arms and I remember thinking, if I can just be thin like them- then I can be beautiful and live this picturesque life, where even standing in the rain is dreamy and lovely.  I couldn’t imagine my fat limbs and big belly fitting into that picture. 

It just seemed like all those features would “take away” from the grace and beauty somehow.  The illustrations above have a lot of the same stylistic features of those cards my grandmother had and so when I saw them it was like a journey back in time to the little girl sitting on that shag carpet, dreaming of being beautiful.  I can’t really express what it feels like to see my body in these illustrations today, and seeing them be beautiful and graceful and carefree and fat.
