If our boy Shane Hollander was diagnosed.
Representation is important and of course Scott Hunter literally yoinking his cutie patootie boyfriend over the boards so he can celebrate on the ice with his loved one just like everyone else on his team was inspirational and valuable. But let's face it, no way was Ilya fucking Rozanov getting outdone by 100,000 years old Scott Hunter. He's younger than Scott Hunter, he's braver than Scott Hunter, he's obviously going to one up Scott Hunter by going to that dang cottage with his sweetie pie boyfriend!!
"the tuna meltdownTM would have ended with them being exclusive if Ilya had only been straightforward with Shane." WRONG. unironically the best way for Ilya to sneak Shane into being exclusive would be like "hey going no condoms would be hot, yes. š but not safe. š but wHAT IF we both got tested and then didn't sleep with other people when we're apart??? good idea because then we can fuck raw?! safely!"
and then he waits and brings up the "actually I'm not sleeping with other people because i'm not interested in doing that" later, once Shane has acclimatized like a frog.
Ilya is so lost for Shane immediately it makes my heart HURT like does he know his sweet future husband is autistic? No. But does he know his sweet adorable angry kitten situationship definitely ran to the bathroom after the stunt on stage to have a little angry kitten meltdown? YES and you can see it on his face when he walks into that bathroom like oh kaaaay time to let my beloved let out his feelings in private and remind him everything is fine I'm here ugh he's already besotted
And then he gives him a clear plan! Knowledge of what to expect and how long he should portion out his energy for!šš
Slight sidenote: I've long thought that exchange might be an additional factor to why Shane takes the lack of kisses that time so to heart.
Being autistic and (frustratingly) quite literal minded myself, I took the bathroom kiss as an actual reply to Shane's question the first time watching it. Perhaps he did too?
Wonderful gifs by @pinenora317.
Yes! I 100% would have taken that kiss to mean there would be lots of kissing and would be extra sad if no kissing (and that's after the fact that I already really like kissing)
Oh.
Guys how long do you think it takes for Ilya to do the very out of character, clearly someone elseās voice coming out of his mouth, self-deprecating thing in front of the Hollander parents.
Heās going to say āwell, you know how lazy I am, hahaā. And heās going to get hit with a nuclear fucking missile when they not only are confused and unhappy in their disagreement. But fully pull a āwhy would you think that Ilya??ā Concerned parent thing.
David frowns and say now, I donāt think thatās true son. Unless youāre saying youāre faster than me at puzzles without even trying haha :)
Yuna says oh but youāre so hardworking! Look at you with your rookies you train up and with the way youāve turned the centaurs around! Thatās why coaches like you so much :)
Ilya is fighting for his life while Shane just leaves him to struggle with the weight of all this while he loads the dishwasher because heās been trying to win this argument for ages and now has backup.
Edit: I just had a vision of one of them sarcastically saying āyou should be ashamed of yourself!ā about something minor Ilya did wrong in a game and him very seriously apologizing and saying āI am ashamed, Yuna/Davidā the exact same way he does with his dad. Not quite making eye contact, same posture from when they first met. And they have to have thoughts and feelings about it. Theyāre horrified and all ānooo, honey wtfā and he just doesnāt get why itās a big deal. So now you can all experience that vision too.
I know bisexual terminator was trying to come out during tuna melt gate but all Mr. Autism heard was "gay as fuck to never be seen with a girl btw" "you're failing to perform heterosexuality they're going to kill you"
LITERALLY this I'm on this episode and Shane was not panicking until he realized there were Standards⢠for him to meet and Ilya was setting them. Doesn't matter Ilya wasn't actually doing that, Shane heard him loud and clear!
Ilya is the type of depressed person who opens the fridge and realizes thereās no milk and is like āFine, Iāll just kill myself thenā and Shane overhears and wears a really exasperated look and says āI told you not to joke about thatā and Ilya responds āWow okay I thought it was healthy to share my feelings but I guess I will just bottle them up thenā and Shane gives him a look like heās got five seconds to run.
This is probably too anti-psychiatric for the HR fandom, but I honestly believe Ilya would be the last person to ever suspect Shane is autistic. Most the time, non-autistic people with a commonplace understanding of autism only suspect a person is autistic when they perceive that personās behavior to be so abnormal and/or disruptive that in their mind it could only be explained by a condition. But Ilya is always either unbothered or endeared by Shaneās autistic traits. Sometimes he doesnāt even notice them. It just doesnāt make any sense to assume that he would ever look at Shane doing something that he either has no problem with or finds adorable, and then think, āThis has to be a symptom of something.ā Honestly if Shane ever did get diagnosed, I donāt think Ilya would believe it. And sorry but I also kind of think this is exactly how Shane would want Ilya to be.
Not to get too autistic on main, but the autistics that seem not too abnormal or disruptive like Shane are having deep meltdowns that are disruptive and bothersome behind closed doors. While we saw Shane have a meltdown when David appeared and Ilya was excellent at giving him calming support and didn't seem bothered by Shane at all, that's not exactly the point. He can be endeared by Shane and also recognize that Shane does get into levels of distress that are atypical and if nothing else, distressing to Shane. Shane isn't having a fun time being freaked out about his triggers and eventually, those triggered reactions would begin to concern Ilya not because he thinks Shane is weird or bothersome, but because he wants Shane to not be detrimentally affected by all these stress events. This is why I'm big into the notion that Ilya doesn't know Shane is "autistic" - but he's thinking constantly about how to support Shane through his meltdowns and wanting him to get help when he asks for it. And the fact that in the Long Game (spoilers) Ilya seeks out therapy almost completely on his own (just with the fact that Shane was like, briefly, get help maybe?) suggests to me that Ilya would absolutely use his resources in the same way for Shane.

2. Proud of your hustle!
3. You're doing great!
4. You're gonna get the scholarship! (Kip said I would jinx him)

My one complaint about episode 3? My *only* one??? Not getting to hear Shane Hollander and Scott Hunter screaming at each other. Actually, why didn't they put the camera physically between them while they were straining against their teammates to get at each other. Just put me literally in the mix of them yelling at each other over gay on gay crime that they otherwise would run in the opposite direction of discussing in public. My sweet adorable little hockey players getting upset at each other bc of ILYA who is at home having a fun little time blissfully unaware.
Scott. Hunter.
What Ilya saw through that peephole š
this could be⦠my favorite scene⦠from the whole show?? (and theyāre wearing literally the most clothes) Ilya coming in SO hot, a long kiss to the helmet in front of god and anyone who cares to look while Shane has THE cutesiest oh hey baby š„° look on his face as his eyebrows hit his hairline um⦠sorry, has anyone actually seen Shane Hollander before?? he wasnāt this visibly happy when he won the CUP ilya I swear to god is about four milliseconds from knocking him to the ground like an overexcited golden retriever
Shane hollander is truly one of the characters of all time. He played one sport when he was like 4 years old and decided to make it his entire livelihood for the rest of his life. He met one guy when he was 18 and decided that was it. Thats all he needed. Hes made like 4 decisions in his life and if anything jeopardizes those decisions he is trying to change the trajectory of the universe with his mind. He is constantly playing 10D chess with every possible situation and life scenario (read: plotting and planning 10 years in the dark after ilya offhandedly mentions marrying someone else for a green card) and im not sure if he's winning or losing. No one is doing it like him
So lovely to have such committed autism representation on TV these days
