2/3 Iranian Xantias were available in 3 different trim levels and 2 engines. The most equipped one had side airbags in addition to front passenger and driver airbag, rain sensors, 6disc CD changer, automatic A/C and etc. Engines were 1.8L 110hp and 2.0L 135hp delivering power to the front wheels via a 5-speed transmission. Despite the huge popularity of Xantia between the middle class and higher class people in Iran, SAIPA had to discontinue the production of the car due to its contract expired and also lack of knowledge in Iran to domesticate the production of the parts. Xantia served Iranian families and Police Highway Interceptors for years and now you can find the roughed up ones everywhere and occasionally some good ones like this on the hand of the enthusiasts. Citroen Xantia was chosen for the Iranian market for its good looks and acceptable performance. Iranian Xantia is equipped with a 1.8L or 2.0L engine producing 110 and 135 horsepower using a 5-speed manual gearbox delivering it to front wheels, no V6 unfortunately. The suspension is Hydro-pneumatic which soaks every bump surprisingly well and helps the handling and maneuverability of the car. Driver and passenger airbags were standard but side airbags were only available on some trim levels, it was also equipped with rain sensors for wipers, immobilizer, Auto air conditioning, seat belt pretensioner, 4disc brakes, ride hight adjustment from the interior, 6 speakers with CD changer. This particular Xantia has European-version rims for Exclusive trim level that were not available to order from the company in Iran. “Société anonyme iranienne de production des automobile” or SAIPA is one of the major auto manufacturers in Iran. The reason for the French name is, back in 1968, SAIPA was established with the help of the French and Citroen. The first product was Citroen Dyane. Later on, SAIPA manufactured Renault 5 and they planned to manufacture the Citroen XM too but they abandoned the project due to the complexity of the car. SAIPA’s other productions were Kia Pride also called as Mazda 121 and Ford Festiva as an entry-level compact sedan/hatchback. 3rd generation Nissan Patrol 160 was assembled in Iran in 4 door and 2 door configuration for ages! Being a fairly accessible and capable off-roader made it a popular choice for automobile enthusiasts. My father had a black one! The ride was rough and it was as slow as a turtle but I never recall it being stuck anywhere. This one is in mint condition with only 41000km on the odometer and one owner other than the current owner. He was kind enough to let me drive it for a couple of hours and take photos of it. Even the Bridgestone tires are original from 15 years ago! You can see that one headlight is out but I didn’t fix it in post so it could hold its originality. . Post 3/3 Shah daily drove his 300SEL for a long time commuting between Sa’dabad palace and Niavaran palace, from home to office. Shah being a car enthusiast had a fleet of luxury and sports cars like RRs, Lamborghinis and Maseratis which he used them for official celebrations or Sunday drives (Friday drives to be accurate!) In 1353 in Solar Calendar (1975) a French TV documentary shows Shah and the queen Farah Pahlavi riding in this Merc through their daily commute to Niavaran Palace. (I included pictures) This Merc stayed in royal garage for 20years after 1979 revolution and eventually sold by revolutionaries to public, then it got sold again for a couple of more times till it met one of its ex-owners, owning it for 10years. He left the car on the side of the street for a long time with a note “For Sale” Eventually it ended up being bought by a friend of mine who is an Auto journalist, finding how special and valuable the car is for the history of Iran, He managed to register the car in FIVA being the first car in Iran achieving the certification. I had the honor to ride in this Benz and photograph it in a rush since we couldn’t drive it for long. Being neglected for a long time had it tole on the engine and cooling system so we couldn’t take it to a location and just photographed it in a street. ➖ Thanks to Mr. Sepasi letting me photograph now his Mercedes and publishing the photos in my Instagram. + 90% of the info I written above and 2 other posts is from his article about this car in Iranian car magazine, “Mashin Magazine” Thank you for spending the time on these posts. . Post 2/3 6.3L V8 was a beast propelling this luxury rig from 0-100km in 6.6s and doing 220km on the highway. Shah ordered his Merc with Stereo Radio, Automatic Antenna, A/C, Tinted Windows and Sunroof making it a 973.000,74 Iranian Rials (about 13.000$) in 1968...
