Hi Samantha! I have a writing question for you; did you let anyone read your manuscripts for Aurora or TBS before you started seeking an agent? I kind of want feedback on what I'm writing as I finish it up, but am somewhat weary of having too many other voices/opinions in my head.
I sent Aurora to a family friend and a freelance editor for comments, but that manuscript was just too flawed to salvage.
The only person who saw The Bone Season before my agent was the Scottish writer Ali Smith. She came to my college to give a series of lectures. While she was there, she offered to look at students’ writing and give her feedback. I mustered my courage and sent her the first chapter of The Bone Season, expecting her to be full of criticism – I was lacking confidence after Aurora –but she told me I was a natural and had nothing but good things to say about what she read. Her support was what finally convinced me to send The Bone Season to an agent.
With The Priory of the Orange Tree, I was working on it alone for such a long time that I felt I needed some outside views to keep me going. I sent the manuscript to a few of my author friends, and even though I didn’t like the idea of showing them an unpolished first draft, I’m so glad I did. Their encouragement and enthusiasm has been invaluable. It’s been such a relief to be able to discuss the characters and story, as I can’t yet talk about them in public.
In short, feedback can be helpful – but you should only ask for it if you’re comfortable doing so, and I think you’re right to be wary of crowding your mind with too many opinions. It’s not a requirement to show anyone your work before it goes to an agent.
About an hour after I submitted this, I shot up out of bed in a panic, realizing I’d typed weary instead of *wary*. This is the stuff nightmares are made of.
