one of the biggest determinants of health is literally social hierarchy. the further down you are the worse your health is, especially because of stress. your job literally kills you. being poor literally kills you. being black literally kills you. not graduating high school literally kills you. and it’s not just a simple threshold between the haves and have-nots, it’s a gradient. So even if you’re middle class your health is still going to be worse than a wealthy person, and it doesn’t even really have to do with access to healthcare either. the whitehall study analyzed workers all with the same healthcare and found that their position in the social hierarchy at work was one of the biggest factors of their health. 

Autonomy, being free from the power of others, is the path to health. 

All of this is well documented by decades of medical research. 

It’s not a surprise that the average working class person’s lifespan literally ends when retirement and social security payments begin.
