Somebody asked me for recommendations on Ulver’s discography. So I’ve compiled links to one recommended song per album and EP. More or less.

Unofficial addendum:

Synen is probably the only other neofolk song Ulver has done and it’s only found in two compilations: Souvenirs from Hell and Whom The Moon A Nightsong Sings.

The closest thing to Nattens Madrigal would be from Kristoffer Rygg’s former side project/supergroup Arcturus and their first album, Aspera Hiems Symfonia.

As for Themes…, Arcturus’ albums (except the first) are probably the best bet. Although, Rygg did leave after The Sham Mirrors. That being said, both La masquerade infernale and The Sham Mirrors are both highly recommended and they also feature ICS Vortex on vocals as well.

Childhood’s End is great if you want to hear Ulver cover a bunch of songs from the 60’s and 70’s.

The compilation Oddities and Rarities #1 has a number of interesting bits and bobs, such as a cover of Prince’s Thieves in the Temple.

Oh how I wish they’ll officially remix this album with Jason Newsted’s parts being made audible. For now, I have to make do with fan remasters online.

I’ve seen the future and it is beautiful.

It’s 2015 and I think it’s about time I get into dungeon synth.

I think it’s marvelous that this was composed on MIDI in the 90s, especially by an underground group. This music is perfect for constructing fantasy worlds and stories.

I feel pretty mixed when it comes to Sigh’s discography. I love what they’re doing in concept, but I tend to lose interest by the third or fourth song.

Gallows Gallery is the only album that I enjoy entirely. Maybe it’s because it was the first Sigh album I listened to. unicycles introduced me to them when he sent me a link to A Sunset Song seven years ago, but I didn’t feel comfortable with Imaginary Sonicscape yet back then, because I was still aversive with black metal.

But yeah, I feel this was the perfect culmination of mid-period Sigh, because they moved onto a different sound in Hangman’s Hymn. I think they took the psychedelic sound in Imaginary Sonicscape, and shaped it cohesively in Gallows Gallery.

Song of the Day #84: Elenor, by Pyramid Vritra

Quite a rarity in hip hop; it’s 16 mins long and its not a posse cut either.

Maybe this counts as progressive hip hop? The song evolves as the beats change throughout the song, like how prog rock songs usually do the same.

Song of the Day #83: Mesk Elil, by Souad Massi

Music is truly a wonderful universal thing.

I was on a group in plug.in yesterday, and a couple of members were playing music with an Arabic touch to it.

I was thinking what I could play to follow their sound, so I played a Cheb Khaled song.

It turns out the two members were Algerian! This has to be one of the funniest and coolest coincidences I’ve experienced lately. I only knew about Raî music (and in effect, Algerian music) because of a music video I saw once on MTV France many years ago.

We spent around an hour playing Algerian music before another member came in. It was a wonderful time, I got to listen to new things I wouldn’t be able to hear in my own bubble and now I’ve got a stronger interest in North African music.

This was a song I chose sort of randomly during that hour. I knew of Souad Massi’s music before, but I didn’t realise it was this beautiful. Everything in the song works so well, it really tugs my heartstrings.

I’m back. It’s been roughly two years since my last post, but hopefully I’ll be posting consistently from now on.

But yeah, I’ve been totally obsessed with this song for the past few months.

Song of the Day #81: Cherish the Day, by Sade

It's about time I started this again.

I generally prefer the version found in the Best of Sade (which I assume is also the version found as a single), because the album version lacks the extended bit at the end.

An interesting side-project by the guys from Extol and some other bands (which I should know, but hey, I get sidetracked way too easily).

Seeing that this was released a year after Synergy, this could be seen as a (jazzier) companion piece to Extol’s album.
