to me the emotion fulcrum upon which deathnote rests is the yagami family dynamic and how outside characters yearn to be inside that dynamic in some way. matsuda, who idolizes soichiro, and develops a pseudo brotherly longing for light. misa, who wants to be part of a family so so so bad. L, who ultimately holds himself apart and yet admires soichiro's paternalism and moral code. moreover deathnote is a story about a boy who fails to become god because he was too attached to his little sister's life to kill her for his cause, a path he embarked on because he's his father's son and inherited a maladaptive fascination with righteousness. they are a perfect nuclear family and they are ruined in the end.
