2k14 - my year in lists
2k14 is officially donezo, which means it's time for my annual foray into sharing my musical inclinations for no particular reason. First, my five favorite albums, in no particular order:
Ought / More Than Any Other Day Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra / Fuck Off Get Free We Pour Light on Everything Johnny Foreigner / You Can Do Better FKA Twigs / LP1 Earth / Primitive and Deadly
And this year, I'm adding singles to the mix. Here's my take on the most raddest cuts of the year:
Hannah Diamond / Attachment - Out of all the amazing weird shit that PC Music birthed in 2014, this was the track that I kept coming back to. Something about the sinister undertones, both in production and lyrics, creates the perfect lense with which to view this hyper-sweet approach to modern pop.

FKA Twigs / Two Weeks - Bewitching, provocative, crystalline. In my dreams, Aaliyah is still alive and it's raining and we drink wine out of the bottle, and this is the song that's playing in the background.

MikeWillMakonnen / Wishin You Well Is breath of fresh air the most trite compliment there is? well... sorry. Makonnen turned shit upside down in the best way possible, and I for one really hope the future has a Makonnen/Fka Twigs collab in store.

Shellac / Riding Bikes Ok fine, if this song was 'Riding Scooters' maybe it wouldn't resonate nearly as much with me. Although, a Shellac song about scooters would be amazing in its own right. I'm always pedaling harder by the end of this song than I was when it started... my eyes are watering. Must be the wind.

Beyonce / ***Flawless ft. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie I met some new friends camping in Big Sur the other day. We started talking pop music and I asked Abbie which was her pick for song of the year, Blank Space or Flawless. She said Blank Space, and I almost let myself be swayed... that seemed to be the majority stance in the group, and there were some highly agreeable vibes in that tent. But I'm sticking to my guns. It's Flawless all the way.
