“I can’t imagine anything nicer than to sit out in the moonlight and listen to music—”
— Virginia Woolf, The Voyage Out
The Twenty-Seven Club
Amy Winehouse, Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, and Jimi Hendrix. All extremely talented musicians whose lives were cut short at the young age of 27. This photo series focuses on how the tragic loss of these young talents is still quite prevalent today. The ink tears streaming down their faces show the sadness that is still very real, even for the youngest generations.
“The night was soft and gray and the trees were featherly in the lamp light and the dim recesses of the pine forest were fragrant with the past, and you said you would come back from no matter where you are. So I said and I will be here waiting. I didn’t quite believe it, but now I do.”
— Zelda Fitzgerald, from a letter to Francis Scott Fitzgerald, August 1936

About what?
“Being born a woman is an awful tragedy. Yes, my consuming desire to mingle with road crews, sailors and soldiers, bar room regulars—to be a part of a scene, anonymous, listening, recording —all is spoiled by the fact that I am a girl, a female always in danger of assault and battery. My consuming interest in men and their lives is often misconstrued as a desire to seduce them, or as an invitation to intimacy. Yet, God, I want to talk to everybody I can as deeply as I can. I want to be able to sleep in an open field, to travel west, to walk freely at night.”

“I did not want to think about people. I wanted the trees, the scents and colours, the shifting shadows of the wood, which spoke a language I understood. I wished I could simply disappear in it, live like a bird or a fox through the winter, and leave the things I had glimpsed to resolve themselves without me.”
