I am worried about the growing number of girls who believe the legal age of consent is the only age requirement necessary for relationships and sex. A lot of young women think dating someone much older then themselves is not just okay but sexy. It is not. A 16 year old dating a 20 year old is not sweet and based on mutual respect, it doesn’t matter how ‘mature’ the 16 year old is or ‘immature’ the 20 year old is. That 20 year old is a predator, and you need to stay away. 

It’s so easy to say “They are only twenty, not really an adult.” but they ARE. When we talk about age abuse, we go straight to imagining creepy old men with young girls. We don’t think about the smaller age gaps, or the four year difference between a 16 year old girl and a 20 year old adult. We need to protect youth from all adult predators.

Dear 16 year old girls, they are an adult and you are not, they are in a position of power and you are not. If someone so much older then yourself agrees to date you, run. Plain and simple. I know that you feel mature, I know that you think you know yourself, I know that you are about defend your right to date predators. I can’t stop you, and I can’t stop those predators from seeking you out and wooing you, but I can beg you to think first, and seek help.

Ten years ago, I would have said this message is paranoid, that people can love one another across any age gap as soon as they are mature enough to develop their own affective and sexual autonomy, blablablah… The thing is, I had my first “serious” romantic relationship at 18 (legal majority age), with a 27 years-old man. I thought I was an adult as much as him, I felt so blessed and lucky I could caught the eye of an older young man who validated me as more mature and clever than my peers while I thought boys my age were immature, moronic and boring, I felt socially elevated to his level. Now I can tell you it was a bloody mistake. Female teenagers, young women (and I think it’s also relevant for homosexual male teenagers and young gay men), I understand you’re attracted (as I am) to an older man. But if this attraction is reciprocated while you’re obviously younger than him (even if you’re a “fully formed” woman, or man), you should ask yourself: - What is he looking for? - What is in me that he can’t find as easily in a woman (or a man) his own age? - What does he like in this specific age imbalance? There’s some chance that the answer is: - what he does find in you is lack of experience, lack of confidence, and the Cinderella syndrome towards the generous Prince, - what he likes is your sense of gratefulness and awe towards him for having “elected” you from the mass of your generation and then how you idealize/idolize him, look at him as an “initiator” (master/teacher!) and can’t relate to him on an equal footing, - what he’s looking for, in the end, is power. It’s much easier to impress and secure one’s power over somebody who’s younger than oneself, especially when the younger one has virtually little to no experience and isn’t economically independent.  Beware of men, however “young” they may seem (still in their 20s) who are looking for this kind of relationships. Indeed, it’s a predatory behaviour.
