Fish in a Barrel | Rae, Nika & Rebecca

Nikaâs brown eyes watched the two women carefully, taking in every detail of body language and change of tone in their voice. They appeared like good friends but the subject at hand made it seem them tear away from each other.Â
Those brown eyes rolled in their signature dramatic way,âPolice donât give a shit about anything in this town. If they did, we wouldnât be here.â Nika said bluntly. But it was true. She had never seen a more lazy, pathetic excuse for a police squad since she came to Spiritvale. Once, a man had broken into the Boathouse when nobody was around â not even in the Inn â and stolen not only their most expensive bottles of alcohol, but all the cash in the register. The police had said he was probably just a drunken low life who would show his face sooner or later. Surprise to them, he never did and was so far gone that the police couldnât do anything even if they wanted to.Â
Sadly Nika hadnât gotten Raeâs what-seemed-to-be reference. Radish? Nika furrowed her brows at the word, confused. Who would name a horse Radish? Sure, the horse couldâve really liked radishes, but why embarrass him like that? All the horses she came across, they always were decorated with great names that would put mighty men to shame â and they wore it with honor. Radish, though? Horrible.Â
âWell her parents have to know something. Who did she hang out with last? Who did she hang out with a lot? Tinis..â Nika cleared her throat, realizing her mistake of the name,âI mean Tanis. If sheâs as innocent as a child, she wouldâve peeped at least something to someone. You donât just kidnap someone and mess with their most personal items without having a conversation or two with them.â Nika was probably talking out of her ass but at this point, she didnât care.Â

Over the years Rebecca bare witness to some downright despicable behavior, from both humans and supernatural beings. She did her best to keep out of otherâs issues but this one hurt. If it came to combat, Rebecca knew she could hold her own with a knife or gun, having to use both of these at various points in the past decade.Â
âThe horseâs name is Rapidash,â Rebecca said quietly, âShe prefers to keep her close to home instead of the stables with the other horses,â It took a moment to refresh her memory from that walk along the lake but it slowly trickled back. âShe loves that horse,â As soon as she said this Rebecca snapped back to the present and looked at the other two women. âThey took her truck, too? Then there are more than one person behind this. Could be two or a small group,â There was no way to know for certain but for a horse, car, and person to be taken? That couldnât be done by just one person.
âSince the police are sitting on their ass and mostly pushing paper, can we reach out to anyone here? Anyone with the ability to see into the past or now? Thereâs so much Iâm still learning when it comes to this supernatural world but is it possible for anyone to posses the sight? Maybe one of the witches?âÂ

Rae nodded in agreement, "The cops here are vacation cops at the end of the day. They take care of tourists, dealing with muggings and petty theft. But murders, murder suicides, people going missing⊠This is way out of their league." And she'd prefer to just steer clear of cops as much as she could. She could see it loud and clear just by reading the newspaper like everyone else, the police were stretched far, far too thin. It's why she felt the need to act in this instance.
She shrugged, "Her parents just said that she took her truck and said she was going for a ride. That was it, that's the last they saw her. She's⊠Shy. She doesn't really have many friends, and her parent's didn't mention anything else. Hell, they were surprised I'd called to ask about her." Rae combed her fingers back through her hair, a tick linked to when she was growing flustered.
Rebecca's initial comment almost went unnoticed until she carried on, "Could be. I mean, you'd think she'd be able to outrun someone if she's on a horse and she knew the route, right?" At her next suggestion, Rae pocketed her notes and hopped off of her chair to look between the two women.
"We can waste time chasing witches for help if we want, but I prefer to get my hands dirty. I wanna go out there and see what I can find, start from the stable she kept the horse at, see what trail we might be able to lead room there. There's got to be some indication there of where she went."
