Ajax bent his head and tapped his forehead against hers in a nod, hooking an arm around her and another under her arm to get her to her feet. “Get your gear, we’re moving now.” He quickly changed his tone, the fresh teams huddling behind him while he helped Raelyn to the exit. “Rae? You stay with me, we’re gonna get you some help and get you fixed up okay? Stay with me Rae.” Outside the mall was a small convoy of parked armored cars barely running on half a gallon of gas each. Ajax gently lowered Raelyn into the back seat of the lead car, “You know, we gotta’ stop meeting like this Little Lady.” Ajax snapped his fingers and pointed at the others to get in the other cars. “Any word from Matt’s team?” He carefully got into the backseat with another Outlander pressing a patch against the hole in his back.
“Nothing yet, probably still out scavenging.” The cars all started and took out down the long stretch of road and through the bent and beaten frames of abandoned buildings.
“Nothing. Him and his lady friend got the hell out before the agents came knocking on his door. Still no word on where they went.”
Ajax leaned over and pointed down a turn, “Turn here and keep going till I say. Church isn’t gonna have what we need to help Rae. We’re paying a visit to some old friends of ours.”
She suddenly felt like she was seventeen again, being shuffled into cars with things around her being shouted. The difference was that, this time, the men in the car were people she knew. James handed her a dirty cloth with a small nod before shutting the door jogging to his jeep. Looking at the rag in her hands, it was stained with red from her own fingertips. A mixture of her blood and Ajax’s, though they looked identical.
“Jax —” She knew she’d barely get a word in edgewise. He was all business and she didn’t have the wits about her to retort. The wave of adrenaline that went through her at the fight was fading and with it her coherence. “’M fine. Really.” Raelyn noticed fresh blood on her jeans. Judging by the pain, it was just a graze, but it was something to focus on. “You’re worried about nothin’. Promise.” She retched, her fingers gripping the edge of the seat as she leaned over the floor board. “Promise. okay?” Rae lifted one hand and put it on Ajax’s leg, gently caressing the fabric under her fingertips.
In all truth she wasn’t sure how okay or not she was, but the last thing she needed was more Outlanders putting themselves at risk for her. A couple more body-shaking coughs and she leaned back into the seat, resting her head gently against Ajax’s arm. “’s fine.”
Next she knew, the sun was setting in the sky as the convoy came to a halt, her head rolling enough for her to jerk into a bleary state of awareness. Her head pounded and her body ached as she tried to connect all the dots for what was going on around her.
