Warm light chased the shadows from the room when he turned his bedside lamp on. Directly in his line of sight was the closet door.

There was nothing structurally foreboding about this closet; other than some chipped blue paint and a janky knob, it was pretty much like any other in the house.

It was, however, possibly still haunted.

Whoever they were, they’d been tall and skeletal-thin, like a Lodgepole Pine in the winter time. They didn’t talk, perhaps couldn’t, but Finn had never stayed long enough to find out. He’d always gone running.

Finn walked as though in a dream, dazed and drifting, past the living room that had once housed his almost-savior, past the kitchen that had been a trap begging to be sprung, down the dim hall and into the unknown. Here he found a narrow storage closet with a washer-dryer unit, a bathroom with an opaque shower curtain, and a carpeted bedroom that smelled of sour mold. 

This, he thought, feeling strangely outside himself, this is where he lived.

A waft of perfumed heat hit him face-first. People crowded the entryway, the stairs, the halls, anywhere there was space to claim. Coats, jackets, and scarves sloughed off the skinny metal coat-rack, under which an assortment of heels, sneakers and boots dripped melted slush onto the polished wood floors. Someone had let loose a cloud of black and gold balloons, which hovered and squeaked and spun on their way to the ceiling. Confetti of the same color littered the floor.

God, Finn hated balloons.

Finn sucked in a sudden, stinging breath. He lowered the scraper and stared at the ground—more specifically the tires that sat a good inch deep in heavy-packed, undisturbed snow. 

Gwen. He was supposed to drive Gwen to school.

“Fuck,” he muttered.

He’d overslept. Against better judgement, he’d gone out for another smoke and came back and laid down in the TV room instead of his bedroom where his alarm clock was and then he’d fucking overslept.

The closet had scared him most of all. Though there had been nothing but dust in it earlier that day—dust he’d giddily swept away and replaced with coats and sweaters and boxes full of summer clothes, eager to hurry up and give a home to all the things he owned—he somehow knew that was no longer true.

Something was hiding in the dark, and be it tonight or tomorrow or a week from now, that something was going to move, and when it did—well, Finn wasn’t sure.

But there was something.

As the door to his hard-fought freedom finally swung open, the open bike lock dangling from its hook, Finn saw but one—the sun.

the other thing that itched at my brain on upon a rewatch was ruth harker's insistence that she did everything she did so that lee be "allowed" to grow up and yet we are surrounded by evidence of stagnation. the hoarding. the fact that she keeps teeth and hair from lee's childhood. the doll, the literal eternal manifestation of lee as a child. and the fact that lee herself is so clearly stunted by this terrible thing that happened to her, BECAUSE she cannot remember it enough to confront it. ruth claims that she is protecting them both but her every action keeps them both steeped in their trauma. and it is very obvious that this movie is about parents who do damage through acts of love and intention to protect but there is something about her actively preserving the memory of her daughter pre-trauma and being unable to connect to the woman she's become that makes me nuts. if there's anyone who's not letting lee grow up, its ruth.

mordere by Anonymous - vampires, blood and gore: heavy heavy on the gore. anon seriously wrote this so well that you can really imagine it (horrific). not classic vampires (borderline cannibalism, but we love that!). happens during canon at benson’s home

And Anyways, I feel dumb (Without you) by heavensvnt - benson’s pov, benson is paranoid, co-dependency: randy and benson on the run with benson’s pov. this is not romantic at all and mostly one sided. something about benson’s characterization really hurt me and i liked it when it hurts!

you show me understanding, patience, and pleasure by bensonschrysler - smoking, first kiss, canon divergence: spoilers, they shotgun. i know amazing. very sweet, nothing crazy just randy and benson hanging out and making out while high. some dialogue of benson being a little angsty but randy pushes through. randy stood up!!

The Evolution of Will Graham’s Darkness

This meta is mostly written for new viewers who find themselves confused by Will as a character. I’ll incorporate some bits of analysis I’ve written before into it. Let’s start with a thesis of a sort: Will is a dark character who had this darkness from the very start, even before his encounter with Hannibal: he was terrified and disgusted with it, but after meeting Hannibal, slowly, he began to embrace himself, getting bolder and bolder in his violence.
