Rage Demon
The World of Thedas Vol.1 (2013)
theharellan:
The question surprised him, brow raising in Val’s direction. An impressive observation, to avoid giving legend the same weight as history, to consider metaphors where myths were concerned. Too often did people jump to one or the other, to deny the elves their achievements or else refuse to see their flaws. “The two are not mutually exclusive,” he responded. “I imagine those who lived above the clouds might come to see those below as lesser. From mountaintops, the foothills look like playthings.”
Solas had gazed on high from those castles himself, but he had always come down, in the end. As dearly as he loved the sky, the earth’s call was unrelenting.
“From what I know of ancient elvhen magic, floating palaces were among the least of their miracles.”
His title of “mercenary” didn’t usually attract people of intelligence. And when it did, they still weren’t mercenaries you really wanted to be around. Val had his mother to thank for his education--he could read and write, and she’d told him both human and elven history. Or at least, whatever she knew. She’d also been very careful about stealing books for him, to make sure his mind was as sharp as his tongue. He may not be at Solas’ level on magical theory, but he understood the difference between the literal and figurative, and from his understanding of the Fade, those could very well be one and the same.
“It makes you wonder, if they could manage floating fortresses, why humans seemed to be the thing to send them into decline.” His gaze flicked up to Solas’ face, then over to the artwork on the walls. “Not that era is my specialty. Or history in general, though I have taken to reading some military tactics.”

“What the hell is your problem?!”
“Leave me alone! Just get out!”
“I don’t care that you’re sorry.”
“Sorry doesn’t just fix everything!”
“You did it on purpose, didn’t you?!”
“I’m done trying to help you!”
“All you care about is yourself!”
“I hate you. I’m sorry it took me so damn long to realize that.”
“You’re a disaster.”
“Fuck you! I’m not going to be your little underling anymore!”
“You’re the worst type of person, you know that?”
“I couldn’t care less about your problems right now!”
“I don’t want to see you ever again!”
“You don’t even care, do you?!”
“You’re pathetic.”
“Don’t come back!”
“I hope someday you get a taste of your own medicine.”
“I don’t care if it kills you this time.”

He nodded. “The process is quick, but when done correctly the wet plaster holds the colours, and the result is a longer lasting mural. As a young man I experimented with dry plaster, but any humidity peels the paint from the wall.”
Solas angled the journal so they could both see it, turning through the pages with his thumb. Some sketches were from their journeys: depictions of old ruins, wildlife, and their companions. Ian featured more than most, a fact that he felt no need to justify. “Ah, here.” He paused upon a watercolour, an impression of a castle that floated above an ancient forest. The faces of the figures in the painting were all obscured, their eyes all turned towards that which floated over their home. “A memory from the Fade, of Elvhenan,” he explained, voice soft, as if he were afraid of disturbing the memory. “I have one of Ostagar, further back, from my time spent in the south of Ferelden.”
It was always interesting talking to Solas. He acted--and spoke--like he was some old man, trapped in a younger person’s body. Much more proper than most elves he’d met, and with an understanding of court that he’d only found present in elves serving nobles in Orlais. But to Val’s knowledge, Solas was a wanderer, meandering from place to place, serving no one but himself. Yet apparently along the way he’d had the time to graffiti buildings with dry plaster.
As Solas showed Val the art in his journal, he found himself mirroring the other’s soft voice. “Do you think that was literal? Like an actual floating city? Or was it just... something they felt? Like the people there were above them.”

Val’s lips curled in a silent snarl as the drunk continued to drone on and on, bragging about this conquest and that trade deal and how he single-handledly saved a town from flooding just last season. It was enough to drive Val mad. He hadn’t a clue how Inara was managing to respond with anything short of a “fuck off.” Leaning in close to her ear, Val whispered, “Can I kill him already?”

“Sorry I hit you in the face.”
“Are you happy now…? Is this what you wanted…?”
“Please don’t make me go back there…!”
“Do you mean to call me bitter?”
“You look fine today. Fine as in confined.”
“Hiding behind your amnesia again?”
“You abused their bodies, minds, and hearts… lied to them about everything and went through with your threats… but the worst of all, you made them watch each other suffer.”
“Believe me… trust me… remember me… please…”
“We said we’d never leave each other!”
“And the nobles who come are always, ‘Where’s my wine? Bring me my wine, I’m obviously not drunk enough already!’”
“So what will we do? None of us are really the epitome of reliable here.”
“They’re humans. Awful, pathetic humans.”
“Nah, nah, you have to try harder than that. Try again, start over, make yourself more convincing.”
“Are you saying I’m a nuisance?”
“Don’t you ever tire yourself out?”
“He’s very enamored with you. I’m a bit jealous.”
“No. Yeah. Please come home.”
“I want to. I want to be with you forever.”
“I’m glad you’re part of my life. I’m glad I’m yours.”
“They’ve been here all along, together with me, in the dark…”
“What, exactly, is so great about handcuffs?”
“I wanted your attention, but it’s elsewhere…”
“It’s troublesome… worrying about a future you can’t see.”
“How long has it been… since I died?”
“It seems dangerous. However will I control myself~?”
“Do you mean to make me powerless? Because I won’t be that way again.”
“I would risk everything on you.”
“Fine, then. I’ll play along for now. These fools can wait a while.”
“Innocent lives were lost, and for what? For nothing.“
“You make me feel… like I’m not alone. Like I never was.”

Most tantrums in Skyhold began in the ambassador’s office. By the time they passed Solas’s door the worst of their anger had subsided, their threats ending with a pathetic whimper that Josephine could assuage with a few honeyed words. Val’s anger was more a storm than what self-important nobles could manage, however. Solas startled as he entered, ears pointing to the ceiling before angling back (and away from the sound of the other’s growl).
“I would not word it that way myself,” he said. His tone was smooth and even, a deliberate dissonance from Val’s. “Although now that you’ve said it, it does resonate. Why– what has happened?”
“Orlais happened!” Val snapped. A sharp inhale followed his words as his eyes fluttered shut in some poor attempt to settle the pounding pulse inside him. Solas hadn’t been involved. No reason to direct his anger unjustly towards an innocent party. Val rolled his shoulders before forcing himself to cross his arms and lean against the desk he was still so tempted to toss over. “I was informing Josephine on my previous work against some nobles and how they should be avoided at all costs, only to learn that one of them plans to be here this afternoon under the pretense of backing the Inquisition.”
Val grit his teeth as he continued, hands forming into fists around his biceps. “I wouldn’t care normally, but he tried to hire mercenaries a while back to raze the farms near his chateau for ‘ruining the view of the river with their peasant hovels.’ He eventually found someone willing to do it, and they burnt three farms to the grount, bought the land, and are planning on putting in a vineyard. And despite all of this, Josephine still plans on talking to the dick--about what, Maker only knows.”

From an excerpt of Josephine’s letter to the Inquisitor:
…and one last thing: Vaharel should be kept as far from the proceedings as possible. While I’m sure he is excellent in the field and a valuable part of your enterauge, his inability to control his temper and violence has caused trouble on more than one occasion. And even if there is no outburst, his stare has been found disturbing unsettling on more than one occasion. It would be for the best if he’s assigned duty somewhere else in Skyhold to keep him preoccupied during the next tour with some potential Orlesian backers. My reccommendation would be to have people like Vivienne, Dorian, and perhaps Blackwall present to assist you. Let me know what you decide, so I might make the appropriate introductions.
