It wasn't being shot with an arrow that had hurt Henry the most. And by no means did that tickle. He looks down at his arm–there’s a good chance he’ll recover. At least that's what the village healer, Goodsir tells him.
“A simple flesh wound. The arrow doesn’t appear to have been poisoned. You’re very lucky, Henry,” Goodsir says as he removes his bandages and applies another poultice.
Henry doesn’t say anything. He doesn’t feel lucky.
“Fitzjames asked after you. Edward too,” Goodsir continues. “They want to visit."
Henry looks out the window. Outside. Where it happened.
No, what hurts him the most is that someone shot an arrow into him at a festival. One that he himself had organised to uplift the spirits of his fellow villagers. He can’t think who could possibly hate him enough to do something like that. He's known almost everyone his whole life.
Out of the hundred or so villagers, it could have been anyone. Graham has been rounding up people to try and find out who the criminal is. It won’t result in anything–Graham will believe anyone who denies wrongdoing.
“I don’t want to see anyone,” Henry says for the third day in a row. He doesn’t. What’s the point? He’s been humiliated in front of everyone.
The recovery won’t be a full one. He knows this. The annual archery competition is next week and despite winning it six years in a row, he’ll be lucky if he can even string his bow himself, much less fire a winning shot.
No, he doesn’t want visitors, well-wishers or anything else that people tell him he needs.
“Leave me, please,” Henry says. The bottle of mead on the table is the only company he wants.
It won’t hurt him. Not in the way that people do, at least.

I found the picture on the cover on the Public Image Archive, apparently it was part of a series of photographs where people used the magic of photography to stage improbable scenes.
