What if Shane's mother never left home when he was a child?

From the outside, the Hayden family looked like the American dream. A successful stock broker with a beautiful socialite wife and their handsome young son, living in a sparkling penthouse apartment in the fantasy that is the Upper East Side of Manhattan. For 20 years the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. James Hayden has prospered, and the media made sure to market them as the perfect power couple. But the magazines that collected in the pile set aside for his mother's mail as she was off on another one of her "trips" didn't even begin scratch the surface. 

The marriage of his parents hung on the end of a splitting rope. Shane was actually amazed they were still together. Money ran their lives, especially his father. He liked to keep tight control over his wife as she never really gave up her socialite mentality, and she made sure to let that known. It was harmless fun, at first, but the constant pressure from her brooding husband made her crack. First it was the alcohol addiction, then the drugs, and the endless fighting between his parents seemed to revolve around her every move. Shane never came first with his mother being a constant amenity to keep quiet and he was forced to be independent at an early age. He was 15 when he finally figured out that his father had been paying his mother to stay, and continued (not knowing Shane knew) throughout his high school years. Shane was smart, but he acted out in school, getting kicked out of every prep school in Manhattan. His father was forced put him on house arrest: homeschooling, with paid professors of course. 

Shane knew he wanted to get out of New York, he couldn't take being trapped there. California was the perfect place, across the country and beautiful all year round. Not to mention he loved the ocean. But he soon realized that it was him who was actually keeping his parents together.

With his mother relapsing and his father's last straws being drawn, Shane feels useless on the other side of the country.
