My five year plan is to listen to music
top ten heart wrenching moments in next to normal
(in no specific order because they are all equally devastating in their own ways)
1. the reveal that gabe is dead
diana's look of hope as she walks up the stairs coupled with dan and natalie's wounded expressions makes the whole reveal even more shocking
2. natalie's breakdown during her piano performance
as a perfectionist with crippling anxiety who wants to be acknowledged for her talents, i feel for her
3. natalie trying to block out her parents' argument
i think this one speaks for itself. just look at her
4. diana's blood on the floor
absolutely chilling scene with gabe's toy car and bin surrounded by diana's blood
5. gabe's expressions during "i've been"
his scared expression at diana's blood being on the floor and his look of hurt when dan says there's no one around makes my heart break for him
6. gabe touching natalie's hand
him softly touching her hand before he leaves forever and her feeling it was genuinely soul crushing for me
7. dan throwing gabe's music box
dan's yell at natalie, natalie getting scared and running away, and diana tears and attempts to fix the box shook me to my core
8. dan breaking down in front of natalie
from the whole production, this scene made me tear up the most. dan's gut wrenching sobs still echo in my head
9. gabe's pleading look after "i am the one reprise"
jack wolfe just really knows how to pull on my heartstrings because god i feel so bad for gabe that my heart hurts
10. diana crying when she's going through gabe's baby stuff
hearing people break down makes me so emotional. and diana whispering "my baby" while clutching gabe's baby clothes just made sure that i would want to bawl my eyes out
"look at me"
dan and his refusal to look at gabe
i think it's interesting how uncomfortable he is with gabe's presence
he spends so much of the show looking through him never actually stopping to reconcile with him
i think especially his discomfort at even objects/reminders of gabe is interesting, like with the music box, and leaving diana alone with the box of gabe's things rather than going through it together
both of them literally having diana’s blood on their hands is the craziest /pos choice of all time
How could I ever forget?
| But something next to normal would be okay
jack's gabe + letterboxd reviews
We tried to give you a normal life. I realize now, I have no clue what that is.
"You can try to hide, you know that I will find you"
imo gabe fully embraces his sorta antagonistic role through I'm Alive and like it establishes him and his influence over the entire Goodman family so well!?
I love the handheld mic and how it is used to connect with the rest of the family in different ways and tbh even the audience. the more threatening tone is just so complex and fun to watch because jack smashes it
anyways proshot tomorrow ahhh!!
do you ever think about Natalie who doesn't see Gabe but can feel his touch... because she has never met him yet she's all too aware of the immense grief looming over her family... she doesn't know who he is but she knows he's there...
gabe being on stage for this scene was genuinely so gut wrenching i had to take a break
NEXT TO NORMAL PROSHOT + heart-wrenching moments Wyndham's Theatre (September 2024)
| please hear me calling
i went into Next to Normal prepared to be blown away by Jack Wolfe’s performance and i absolutely was. he did an amazing job. BUT. Eleanor Worthington-Cox as Natalie was fucking incredible. the emotion that she portrayed was insane- when she was being sarcastic, angry, sad, any of it. she genuinely did so fantastic and i think she deserves a lot more appreciation
Her sobbing all the time >>>>>>
I cannot stop thinking about the undertones of guilt in Diana’s last interaction with Gabe, and even slightly in Dan’s. It’s a bit noticeable in the proshot, was VERY noticeable in the last show I saw. Like this is their SON, he was just a baby who wanted to be loved and remembered and in different ways they both equally failed his memory and turned him into this destructive force which he should never have been. I always saw the London staging of The Break as Diana in part realising what she helped turn Gabe into, as well as acknowledging her own pain.
And don’t even get me STARTED on how they’ve warped Gabe’s memory for Natalie and twisted their relationship which could’ve been affectionate (her brother as her guardian angel or something). And this on top of the MULTITUDE of ways they failed Natalie…and yet it’s Gabe she blames for most of the show. Something about Gabe taking the antagonist role when he’s actually the only innocent in the family because he’s not real and the only thing he did “wrong” was die.
Anyway never not thinking about all the ways this family failed each other it KILLS me.
