Giving up // Drizzle
He could count on the fingers of one hand, the number of times they had kissed that month. He could easily list the three or four times in the last changing of the season each time he had said I love you, they were so few and far between now. Four years together, and it seemed already to be four years too long. His heart no longer skipped a beat when he woke up next to her, and he couldn't work out why. It couldn't be because of some stupid doctors words, or the fact that being a dad seemed impossible, just like it seemed impossible that the sun would shine down on the beach at the back or the garden again.
Another rainy day greeted them, another constant patter of raindorps against the windows. He used to love the smell of rain, four years ago. But this morning he was so distracted he hand't even noticed that his ring wasn't on. That he'd forgot to flick the switch on the kettle. That he'd put the lead on the dog but not taken it for a walk. The world kept turning, and yet as Sophie had said last night, something was missing. She'd tried to put it nicely, even if there was no nice way to put it. It was clear even to his family that they were falling apart at the seams since leaving the hospital six months ago, and no trip they made seemed to fix it.
They had come back from Rome, falling further and further out of love. They'd returned from safari with bags under their eyes larger than whey they had left. They'd been to the Northern Lights, and when they settled back in again it seemed like they had barely had the energy to leave the Hotel whilst there. And now Sophie had tried to face it head on, tell them they couldn't carry on with this 'not talking' forever.
Sighing and sitting at the kitchen table, Andy out his head in his hands. He wanted to make this right, he just didn't know where to start.
Forgetting.
It's funny. You think to yourself sometimes, ow funny it is really. Not in the laugh out loud kind of way that happens when the dog shakes mud all over the white kitchen cupboard just after you've cleaned them, or how Lizzie sometimes roles out of bed and straight into the pile of covers you'd put there the night before so she didn't land with a thud. No, it's in the kind of way that fate intended, that despite loosing one person you love, you managed to find another to try and fill the whole that was left behind.
And you don't even notice how much you need her most of the time. Most of the time, you wake up next to her and look to the time on your alarm clock, getting up to shower first rather than spending those spare five minutes just watching her breathing as you used to. Most of the time, you'll take the dog out before she's even up because you need that air in your lungs and will be out of shape for the start of season if you let the training down. Most of the time, you'll leave her a tea on the side before heading out to open up the shop, forgetting to tell her that you love her, and everything about her.
But on your morning run, when you can see your breath in the air and feel the sand move between your feet, your eyes leave the dog for a moment. Instead, you look up to the sky, and it takes that breath you could see straight away. Without thinking, you turn on your heel, the dog barking and trying to catch up as you sprint back to the house, drag a jumper from the drawer and wake her, tell her she can't sleep in this morning or she'll miss it. She doesn't understand what yet, the curtains only let in a slice of light as she pulls on her jeans and the jumper you handed her before reaching to her wellies and looking for the dogs lead. You look between her and the door, your smile growing as you think about how her face will light up when she see's. She moans slightly, as you cover her eyes and nudge her gently out the door, avoiding tripping over Flounder and warning her about the steps down from the back of the garden to the beach. You struggle to talk slightly, her hair fills your mouth because of the bloody wind but as you remove your hands, you remember.
You remember everything you forgot before. You remember why you have made all he choices leading up to now, and don't regret a single one. Yo remember it was all for that smile, and promise never to forget it again.
Courage From a Bottle // Drizzle
Straightening his tie, Andy looked through the window into his parents garden. This was it, this was for real. He was about to be the luckiest man alive, well in an hour or so, and his grin stretched from ear to ear. He span on the spot as someone knocked at the door, his sister coming in and complaining about how wonky his tie was, it all fell on deaf ears. His stomach was doing flips, his body pretty much shaking. There was so many people, he could hear the noise filtering through the window now but tried his best to ignore it. "S-Soph I just need to..." He headed for the door before she ran in front of him, blocking it. "Oh no you don't, Liz is getting ready out there and there's NO chance you can see her."
With that, Sophie slipped out of the door and shut it behind her, to a chorus of giggles on the other side. Andy headed back the the mirror, picking up a bottle of Vodka from the bed on his way and taking a sip with a wince. Just to stop the shakes. Maybe it was the alcohol, maybe it was just that he;d never been great with rules but right now he just wanted Lizzie here already, to forget the people and the officialness of it all...
Having a brainwave, he flipped the latch on the window and stowed the bottle in his inside sit pocket, forcing his way out of the tiny gap and trying to make his way around the edge of the gutter unnoticed. Yes, he was way to big for this. Yes, he was acting like a total teenager in love. But he just wanted to tell Lizzie how much she meant to him without all this crap one last time.
Peering through the window of his parents bedroom, he saw a few bridesmaids heading for the door, closing that one too and leaving. He tried to foce his parents window open, not noticing the latch was shut and nearly falling straight off the roof to become the groom with the broken leg. Instead, he grabbed tight to the gutter and knocked hard on the window, so hard it started to crack. "Liz," He hissed, trying to get er attention even though she was out of sight, "LIZ."
Say Something // Drizzle
Andy didn't go to the cliffs often. In fact, he actively tried to avoid it. On the whole Isle, it was the single place he daily tried to find excuses not to go. He'd think up reasons not to jog by on his morning run, he'd take extra shifts when his family wanted to visit them, he'd walk the dogs on the other side of the Isle just so he didn't have to face it. He couldn't face it was the truth. But today, today was different. Maybe it was an act of fate, maybe it was just stupid coincidence but he finally felt the need to try and face his fears.
Standing on the windy expanse, camera in hand, he was staring to think he should have at least a worn a jacket. Or someone. Being here alone made it all the worse to face, maybe Soph would have at least made him feel better or-
The sight of the red head standing closer than the barrier interrupted his thoughts. What the hell was she doing here? Why on earth was she so close? "WHAT-"
But as she'd turned to see where the shout was coming from, she had lost her footing and was falling. Someone else was falling. Someone needed him, she needed him just like Connor had. He had to jump. He had to face it all again, he couldn't let her drown.
Fortune Favors the Stubborn // Drizzle
Minding his fathers shop wasn't exactly his favorite thing in the world to do, the ancient internet connection that managed to turn itself on and off every thirty seconds made it downright impossible to watch a game, and even the score updates for the six nations barely worked in here. Andy leaning back in his chair, sighing, rubbing his face slightly and wishing he could just shut up and head home already. It was only half an hour, and judging by the fact the second-hand bookshop had no customers all day it probably wouldn't make that much of a difference. He stared at the door for a minute or so before clicking update on the scores again just in case a tri had happened and he didn't know. He'd much rather be playing, despite the rain getting slightly heavier outside, except in the years after Connor's death, he'd been dropped from the county team and couldn't even make it onto the school side for his last year. Things had become messy...
Speaking of messy, the bell of the shop door rang though his thoughts, along with the drumming of water hitting the floorboards. He couldn't really see who it was, but they seemed to be shaking off all over the stock. No doubt his father would have to replace it all if they carried on. "Oi," He started, getting up out of his chair and rushing between the narrow gap in the shelves so that he accidentally knocked the piles of books to the floor anyway. "What do you thing you're doing?!"
His breath caught in his throat, as he got a proper look at the girl standing soaked on the doormat. Her red long hair was what caught his attention, but those big beautiful green eyes just made it hard for him to look away. She was stunning, despite the shocking yellow rain mac that seemed to be leaking all over the place. He stuttered, trying and failing not to stare...
