Really wish it was discussed more how cis men's lack of hygiene actually hurts women by causing medical problems for women.
To reiterate: Christopher Paolini, author of Eragon and other such books, blocked me on Twitter for calling him out about his AI-generated cover.
Tor has admitted he approved this cover and they have been consulting him every step of the way. He is complicit.
It’s honestly so fucking frustrating that this is going to go forward. That the cover to Fractal Noise is gonna be published with AI art that has ripped off other artists. And neither the author nor the publisher give one flying fuck about it.
I don’t think a lot of people really understand what this means. Book cover art is already nearly universally shitty. You go look at fantasy art covers, and they’re all photomanipulations, generally a single girl on the cover doing magic or looking into the distance. There’s no variety. But at least people get paid for them.
With AI art, artists don’t get paid. You know who does? The people who made the dataset. The people who sold the “cover.” Even though it took less than 20 minutes to make.
If this isn’t infuriating you, I don’t know what the hell else to say. Machine learning is coming for everyone’s jobs, and corporate wallets don’t care if it’s safe or not. Certain areas are already experimenting with AI Amazon deliveries, and it’s been hinted that long-haul trucking is next.
This is unacceptable. PLEASE. I’m not going to guilt you into sharing this, but it is CRITICAL that we take a stand now and STOP THIS FROM HAPPENING. If you follow me, I am asking you as a friend to share this, and to find it in your heart to put pressure on people who publish AI art without paying artists.
Tor could change the cover. They’re not, because they’re using Fractal Noise as a test run to see if they can get away with it. Don’t let them. I don’t care how much you like Paolini’s work (although I think Eragon was a boring slog, so I had no qualms about calling him out), you HAVE to do your best to make this stop.
When i tell y'all there is more to this story than I was able to write…
The globally acclaimed science fiction and fantasy publisher delivers a weak apology for using AI art for a not-yet-published book.
Chiming in as an author: everything Tor and Paolini are saying about how they can’t possibly change the cover, waaaah production restraints, is BULLSHIT. The book’s not out until May. Even IF they’ve already printed the first batch, they can still own up to the mistake and make the commitment to change it for further printings. But they have not. They just said they’re going with the AI cover anyway.
An author as big as Paolini CAN push back on publishing decisions. Yes, there are set dates in a publishing contract, but they’re more like suggestions. My sequels have been pushed back so many times past the contract dates simply because I haven’t finished writing them. What could Tor do if Paolini stood his ground on changing the cover, take him to court? When it’s THEIR fault? If he held firm on denouncing the AI cover, he could get it changed. I’ve gotten a whole audiobook rerecorded from scratch with a new voice actor because my publisher initially chose a Japanese one who could not pronounce the Mandarin in my book correctly. If the book will have to be delayed for up to a year like Paolini says, so what? Is it not more important to take a stand to protect artists? There are so many things Tor could do to remedy this situation. They just don’t want to. They’d rather get the sales as soon as possible.
As I’ve said on Twitter, “My concern is that if community pushback isn’t enough to get Tor to change this cover, all publishers will see it as a go-ahead to use AI art on covers. Paolini isn’t a midlister whose career hinges on this release. He can take the hit of delaying the book to make things right.”
I know he said he’s not letting his books get an AI cover ever again, but he’s also Liking tweets like this:
Stop defending him for going ahead with THIS blatant AI noodle arms cover just because you liked Eragon.
people have got to learn the difference between I didnt like it and It was bad
"I don't think this was made for me" changed my life and made me much more tolerable to be around. I wish I'd learned it earlier in life.
oh good fucking lord. i hate to even have to say anything in defense of the guy- i think the original tweet was corny as hell and it’s certainly not my place to defend him writing the anne frank house kiss into his books, nor would i even want to. but Jesus Christ, publicly responding to a false public accusation of pedophilia (that the accusers are ASKING YOU TO PUBLICLY RESPOND TO) is not “leading a harassment campaign”. how do you assess that situation and not realize the people publicly accusing someone of being a pedophile (albeit using coy weasel language about it) are the ones quite literally leading a harassment campaign and not the person responding to it. i don’t care that the guy has a big platform, making public false pedophilia accusations because of “vibes” is libelous harassment, and if you directly ask for someone to respond to your harassment campaign, you don’t get to “nyaaah I’m just a little guy” yourself out of things when they do in fact respond. come on.
this guy did nothing wrong here. this is not “leading a harassment campaign”; it is responding to one.

Genuinely the current political climate is fucking abysmal people have gotten so weird and pearl-clutchy about sex that they get frightened when sexuality is celebrated at gay pride and somehow we've regressed past the "equating women to uteruses is bad what if we didn't treat people like breeding stock" stage of feminism from like, the 1920s. In an effort to get a #win against trans people or something?? So that's cool
Not to be like "this is Literally 1984" but like people are getting so ultra-conservative christofashy that I've seen people arguing about if it's morally okay to be sexually attracted to real people without asking. Not doing anything just experiencing attraction. You guys are trying to invent thought crimes. I know the pandemic got everyone a little disconnected from reality but it is not the end of the world if you glimpse an ankle
“I’ve been a massage therapist for many years, now. I know what people look like. People have been undressing for me for a long time. I know what you look like: a glance at you, and I can picture pretty well what you’d look like on my table. Let’s start here with what nobody looks like: nobody looks like the people in magazines or movies. Not even models. Nobody. Lean people have a kind of rawboned, unfinished look about them that is very appealing. But they don’t have plump round breasts and plump round asses. You have plump round breasts and a plump round ass, you have a plump round belly and plump round thighs as well. That’s how it works. And that’s very appealing too. Woman have cellulite. All of them. It’s dimply and cute. It’s not a defect. It’s not a health problem. It’s the natural consequence of not consisting of photoshopped pixels, and not having emerged from an airbrush. Men have silly buttocks. Well, if most of your clients are women, anyway. You come to male buttocks and you say – what, this is it? They’re kind of scrawny and the tissue is jumpy because it’s unpadded; you have to dial back the pressure, or they’ll yelp. Adults sag. It doesn’t matter how fit they are. Every decade, an adult sags a little more. All of the tissue hangs a little looser. They wrinkle, too. I don’t know who put about the rumor that just old people wrinkle. You start wrinkling when you start sagging, as soon as you’re all grown up, and the process goes its merry way as long as you live. Which is hopefully a long, long time, right? Everybody on a massage table is beautiful. There are really no exceptions to this rule. At that first long sigh, at that first thought that “I can stop hanging on now, I’m safe” – a luminosity, a glow, begins. Within a few minutes the whole body is radiant with it. It suffuses the room: it suffuses the massage therapist too. People talk about massage therapists being caretakers, and I suppose we are: we like to look after people, and we’re easily moved to tenderness. But to let you in on a secret: I’m in it for the glow. I’ll tell you what people look like, really: they look like flames. Or like the stars, on a clear night in the wilderness.”

The drag queen from this photo has spoken up about the photo.
I won’t speak for all liberals, but I’d like to see a future where it isn’t a big deal for a woman in full modesty garb to sit next to a drag queen in NYC. It’s become a bit of a sensation, but her and I were just existing. The freedom to simply be yourself in a sea of people who aren’t like you is a freedom we all deserve.
The central irony is that this isn’t some hypothetical future–it’s just present day reality. This is a picture of two ordinary people going about their normal lives despite how haters want to politicize it lmao. So the underlying message is not “future liberals want” it’s “people conservatives want to eradicate”
