It seems bizarre to me that the popular opinion on Griffin Callenreese is that he willingly took up the challenge of raising Ash and did it because he knew it was the right thing. That's a nice thought, and I can definitely see why people interpret it that way, with the info we have, but as an older brother who helped raise five little brothers, I'd like to give my thoughts on it lol.
I feel that there is no chance that Griffin's relationship to this, now infant, was not filled with at least some resentment and anger.
He already would've resented his father, I imagine in a similar way Ash does. Additionally, correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the presence of Ash's mother is what drove Griffin's mother away.
It would be unnatural to go through all that, and immediately embrace your baby brother, a product of this mess and now, evidently, YOUR problem.
And I truly believe that's all Aslan is to him as first. A new problem, a responsibility, and an infuriating one because it wasn't fair. This boy is 15-17 (Guessing based on Max's age for comparison) and he already has to take care of himself. Now because of his idiot father, he has a baby to take care of.
It doesn't matter if he knows logically that it's not the baby's fault, there's nowhere to put all that emotion, no one there to validate how unfair this is, he's just alone, him and this baby.
Now, I do believe Griffin begins to love his brother genuinely, I think it's inevitable, since he is his sole provider for his earliest years. I just don't think it could be spontaneous, and I think it's definitely something that comes WITH the work of caring for little Aslan.
I believe he comes to love the silly baby/toddler things he does.
More importantly though, I think Griffin soon realizes how similar of a position they are both in. They were both on their own, with only each other. Their mothers had both left, and they had the same useless father.
Soon, this isn't a burden, this is Aslan, his little brother.

This is an au where Ash went through the foster care system and was eventually adopted by Max and Jessica, meeting his girlfriend, "Sara", in the process, as she was also in the foster care system.
He does eventually meet Eiji though, once he gets into college, which is why this is just a Pt 1. Now I hope I finish Pt 2 lol

Since Yue has hairstyles that are often used as a metaphor for his current mental/emotional state, (Loose braid, my fave) I thought I'd follow suit the best I could.
It's a significantly different length to symbolize his freedom, and taking his life and physical being back into his own hands. The uneven cut is meant to represent a change in his personality, being more easy-going and not as uncompromising as before.
This is kind of a part 2 to my Yue and Eiji piece from before, but I thought Yue deserved his own spotlight, because I'm proud of the rendering on the hair
Which is a shame, because Eiji plays a pretty valuable role in Yue's arc, arguably even more than Ash does. And their dynamic is really interesting, and easy to maintain in other scenarios :0
They're both so stubborn and emotional/impulsive in their decision making, and for the most part they're the only characters who are like this.
(Max and Jessica possibly, but Max is a good mix of calculated and emotional)
I just think they would vibe a lot if Yue was in a position where he had to lower his guard

He shortened his name to just "Ash" when he ran away from his hometown.
Like most ponies from a small town, he's an earthpony, and SwiftTrotter is a family name. Being an earthpony he is often underestimated, even though he has a very wide range of skill, which is unusual for a pony of any type.

Unable and unwilling to go home, he works as a reporter for the nobles and was sent to report on Ash's criminal activity.

Eiji got his cutie mark during a pretty dark time in his life. One of the first times his father fell badly ill, and the morale was very low. Eiji assumed the role of keeping hope alive until things got better. When his father came home and he felt the air lift and saw his sister smile, he got his mark.
He doesn't know what his mark means completely, but doesn't remember this time fondly as it was exhausting.
