hiii chat, i made a post about this on twt but i wanted to say it on tumblr too. fandom misogyny isnt just "i hate women!!!!!! kill these female characters!!!!", sometimes its subtle.
check yourself if you do these things:
- loves qiu but does not even engage with tamarack
- turns tamarack into a background character (making her mcs best friend yet never doing anything with that information, or only using her for a jealousy plot with qiu)
- villainizes vianca (sometimes while even praising characters like jeremy)
- writing fiction where non-girl characters are unnecessarily mean to girl characters
- thinks ALL the female characters in the cast is boring
- thirsts over tamaracks dad while hating her mom
- writes tamarack (especially step 2 tamarack) as fragile and need of protection 24/7
- somehow .. makes olnf about baxter??
- portrays opal as abusive
- makes mcs storyline about how tragic it is that mc doesn't have a dad
- only interested in male side chars (baxter, devin, pran) but doesn't care for female side chars (serenity, vianca, etc)
im not gonna say you're a misogynistic person, obviously. I've caught myself guilty of some of these things but you should see these things for what they are: misogynistic biases
I went through the files to find which clothes came from which culture and thought other people might also like this information :) Post goes in order from top to bottom, left to right ! I did do some very base level research each one, but apologies if anything is off.
I ended up talking way more than I meant so I'll put it under the cut!
'Chinese Dress' - Qipao / Cheongsam
From my understanding, these terms are used interchangeably (the latter being based in Cantonese, the former in Mandarin). It's a tight-fitting dress with slits in both sides. It's worn left over right, and has a stiff standing collar. The most common ones I found went to around mid thigh to mid calf, but they can vary. Similarly, they are usually short sleeved, but can be long sleeved or sleeveless.
2. 'German Dirndl' - Dirndl / Tracht
This is the one that Tama wears !! I wasn't able to find a definitive answer as to whether or not these are both correct terms. Some sources use Dirndl for modern versions and Tracht for traditional ones. I don't think it's something universally agreed on. This outfit has four basic elements- Bodice, Blouse, Skirt, Apron. The blouse is cropped, usually (but not always) white, and can have a couple different types of necklines, but older, more traditional ones like the one in game place the neckline pretty high up. The bodice can also have different necklines, but is traditionally square or rounded. This part is commonly more decorated via embroidery ! The skirt was traditionally a separate piece, but more modernly is sewn together with the bodice. Modern pieces are usually around right above the knee, and there's usually a pocket under the apron, which is narrow and should normally only cover the front of the skirt.
There's also winter versions of this that are a bit different to cover more ! Other cultures, especially in Europe, have traditional clothes that look pretty similar.
3. 'German Trachten' - [Trachten] Lederhosen
This word specifically refers to the pants worn in this style. This is modernly men's casual wear, but is also worn at festivals like Oktoberfest. They can be long, but are typically cut above the knee. This is possibly due to them traditionally being used as work clothes, so it was best to have more mobility. They can be decorated with embroidery (just like the dirndl !) and are usually worn with a plain white or checkered collared shirt.
4. 'Mandarin Jacket' - Tangzhuang
This type of jacket is typical Chinese men's formalwear, with the same Mandarin collar as the Qipao and frog buttons ! It used to be worn as an outer layer over Changsan, but is now worn on it's own with dress pants in a similar or complimentary colour. There was also a moment in time where it was seen as very unisex, but I believe it's less common for women now!
5. 'African Ankara Dress' - African Wrap Dress (?)
I need to preface with the fact that the wording made this one harder to research, as from what I read, Ankara isn't a type of dress- It's fabric: Usually pure cotton and contains vibrant prints associated with African culture. I was able to find some examples that look somewhat similar to the one in the game- Collared wrap dresses that were primarily flowy, with an emphasis on an hourglass figure and loose sleeves, with the dress usually going to at least the knee. I wasn't able to find anything on if they need to be tied a certain way, like Kimonos or Cheongsam, I don't think that's a significant matter with these. However, because of the non-specificity (is that a word ?), there's a chance this is a specific style of dress that I just wasn't able to find, so I will update this section if I find something else !
6. 'African Formal M' - Dashiki
I'm still a bit unsure, but I think this is an alternative version of a Dashiki. Traditionally, these shirts would have deep v shaped necklines decorated with intricate embroidered designs, however I was able to find several being advertised as more formal with collars. It's a looser-fitting pullover style of shirt most common in West Africa, but also made it's way to Black communities in the US during the Black Power Movement. They're usually worn with casual pants and sneakers / sandals for everyday casual looks, and in more formal ones there are three main styles. Two of them pair the Dashiki with a pair of drawstring pants called Sokoto and a type of hat called a Kufi (the hat being mostly flat around the top of the head). The third type involved a looser fitting sort of garment being worn over the outfit (that one is called an agbada !!).
7. 'Chut Thai Chakkri'
This type of formalwear is made up of two parts ! The first is the sbai, which is a sort of shawl, is wrapped around the chest and draped over one shoulder (my sources primarily said the left, but there was one or two that disagreed). The other part is called a sinh, which is a (usually silk) wrap around skirt. These skirts are also worn by Laotian women ! However the two will usually use different patterned fabric to showcase their own culture. In Thailand, these are usually only for fancier occasions, unlike Laos, where they're more common everyday wear. There are two pleated folds in the front of the skirt.
8. 'Indian Formal M' - Sherwani
This type of coat came from South Asia ! It uses something similar to the Mandarin collar used for Qipao and Tangzhuang, and goes down to usually right below the knees. I also saw versions with different collars, and a few with no collar at all, but most of the ones i saw had the one pictured. The pants worn with Sherwani are called Churidars, and are unisex and tightly fitted, sometimes having cuffs with buttons at the ankles.
9. 'Indian Sari'
Saris (I believe outside of the US it's spelt Sarees) are worn in several South Asian countries, including Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. These dresses are one piece of fabric, and are folded across the body in several different styles (over 80 !!). From how little we can see, I can't say for sure what style the doll wears, but the neckline is similar to the Nivi or Lehenga styles in my opinion ? But again, it's really not possible to tell I think. A sari is worn with a (usually cropped) bodice and can also be worn with petticoats, skirts, and various jewelry.
10. 'Kimono F' - Kimono (Women's Style)
Kimonos are traditional Japanese formalwear, however there are several versions of them, including a more informal one called a yukuta. (You may have seen those in animes that feature festivals, as they're commonly worn to those events in the summer !) The kimono is very square, both the sleeves and the main section, and is wrapped around the body (left over right, unless being worn by the dead). They're commonly worn with sandals !
Women's kimono's are long, usually trailing the ground, and decorated with intricate artistic pieces. Flowers, flowing water, flora, etc. They wear a broad band across their waist called an obi ! Red and purple kimonos used to be restricted to a higher social class, as the dyes were more expensive.
11. 'Kimono M' - Kimono (Men's Style)
Men's kimonos are shorter than their counterpart, and are worn with a thinner obi that sits closer to the hipbone than the waist ! They're also normally much darker and simpler, with things like geometric patterns and stripes, etc. There is commonly a more intricate pattern hidden on the inside of the jacket (called a Haori) that is only visible when taken off.
The national costume for Thai men is an updated relative of the raj pattern jacket, which uses a mandarin collar, two pockets (or three if the shirt has a breast pocket) and five buttons. The sides are tapered, and sometimes the shirts are vented, though it's not a requirement. There are three versions of this shirt ! Our character is wearing the most formal one, as that's the only one to have a sash. This version is also long sleeved. The sleeves have cuffs at the end, and the sash is tied on the wearers left side. This would be worn with formal dress pants and the shirt would be worn with a suit jacket. (Note that I didn't find any examples of the version with the sash worn with a jacket over it.)

Since we know the Ren DLC has been confirmed to NOT be happening anymore is it possible if you could share any ideas for possible moments, plot points, etc. regarding it.
Yeah. I was imagining that much of her DLC would be adding Ren into existing Moment concepts rather than having a bunch of completely separate Moments like Derek and Baxter did. For example, instead of spending time with Qiu/Tamarack during Halloween, you could join in with the things Ren does on that holiday. You could focus more on her in Wheels and Walks and such.
I was also thinking a key thing with her would be Ren talking to you from her backyard while you're on the other side. She'd look at you over the top of fence or you could peek at each other between a hole in the fence. In the prologue I would've wanted a scene where instead of going straight to the crossroad to find Qiu/Tam, you could sneak onto the road leading out of the neighborhood and Ren would've called out to you there. You would've talked without seeing her whole face/learning her name and you only realized who that was during the scenes after school.
Ren would've made you a yarn friendship bracelet in Step 2 and she could've shown you skateboard tricks or you could've traded tips if you were also a skateboarder. People at school would've been shocked to see a ninth grader like you hanging out in the eleventh grader halls, but Ren wouldn't care.
You would've gotten to have more scenes with her older brother, Devin. He doesn't appear at all in Step 1 now and he would've if Ren got a DLC.
It is very sad the game is too long to actually make these concepts. I really do love Ren and know she has a great story.

yeah in step 3 she gains more confidence and finally shows off her eyes. well show off is kind of a strong word, she is still getting used to just walk around with No hair in her eyes. she likes her sunglasses they make her look Cool As Fuck + its a nice thing to have if she gets uncomfortable with showing her eyes too much.
her little ponytail is a nod to step 1 qius hairstyle :) plus the ribbon from tam. she presents masculine but she still has a cute lil ponytail that her awesome ma and pretty friends do for her.
love how nature gets along with everyone. gets invited to a gyarus party...... goes training to the mejiro household...... good with kids.... popular with the seniors in the shopping district.........
Honestly if i was nice nature i would also be Like That. Imagine you train hard, follow your dreams and finally manage to get into a super prestigious racing school. And then there's just this girl who's good at literally everything??? And also super charming and friendly??? Shes ridiculously gifted at racing and on top of her studies and she has the top scores at the local arcade and shes super popular and one of the best dancers at school. And then she breaks her leg like three times but shes STILL a racing prodigy and beats you in the most anticipated race of the year. And throughout this all you're just like. a normal girl. Your friends are celebrating you placing top five, which is really respectable, and the girl is fucking??? undefeated??? somehow?? And she's also really friendly with you for some reason, which in all fairness might just be how she is, but she also keeps inadvertently rubbing her greatness in your face (not even on purpose!!!) and making you feel so much more mediocre in comparison. And also you're like fourteen or something. i would also develop a complex and also fall a little in love
