The wànhuā concept was born from the hanja/Chinese translation of ‘kaleidoscope’ - 萬花筒 (lit: wànhuātǒng, hangul: 만화경), with its namesake representing the ‘kaleido’ aspect of the word. The word ‘kaleidoscope’ originates from Greek roots kalos, meaning “beautiful”, and eidos, meaning “form”. When put together with the English word scope, it depicts exactly what a kaleidoscope is: a scope of beautiful forms. In hanja/Chinese, the characters literally translate to ‘a scope of ten thousand flowers.’ Just like BTS’ music transcends the barriers of culture, our concept was inspired by transcending the barriers of language.
A SCOPE OF BEAUTIFUL FORMS
The wondrous patterns of a kaleidoscope are formed by brilliantly colored smaller shapes. As we turn the tube, changing our perspective, the same shapes can reveal numerous different patterns, each one as vivid as the last. A person is the same! As a fandom, we all know and love our maknae, but we want you to show us your view of who Jungkook is from your turn of the scope - from your personal perspective! What in particular drew your attention to him? Do you have a favorite moment of his? Or perhaps you share interests! By contributing artwork and messages spotlighting the many sides of Jeon Jungkook, we’re creating a digital kaleidoscope to celebrate the myriad of talents and quirks that make up our birthday boy.
Like a kaleidoscope, each part of Jungkook’s personality is special, but the final product is greater than the sum of its parts - hence the final mosaic image :)
A SCOPE OF TEN THOUSAND FLOWERS
Delving into the Asian roots, 萬花 as a term on its own is often used in literature to not only celebrate joyous occasions but also to herald good fortune and prosperity to come. Sharp eyes may recognize the huā (花) character from the Hwa Yang Yeon Hwa 花樣年華 trilogy! Indeed, Project 萬花 In Bloom also commemorates Jungkook leaving behind his 花樣年華, usually used to refer to as a time of youth, and stepping into his adult years with his 20th birthday.
The sea of flowers in full bloom represents a fulfilling, successful youth. Flowers can only bloom with care and support - embodied in the outpouring of love expressed by your submissions through this project! Furthermore, our flower ocean expresses ARMYs’ hope that Jungkook will continue to walk down the flower path in the future.
