Artemis III crew portraits! Very glad to have a crew, and very excited to fly them next year.
The recent discourse around the Artemis III crew assignments brought to my attention how little even genuine space enthusiasts know about the history of women in space. So, some graphs. While there have been women astronauts for almost 50 years, the numbers only started getting close to equal in the 2000s. The last few NASA cohorts have, finally, been at or close to parity.
Since astronaut careers tend to be quite long, this means a significant lag on the overall composition of the Astronaut Corps. There's a still a few from Group 16 (1996) on the roster. The most recent selection, Group 24 (2025) is the first NASA group with more women than men, but they haven't completed their candidacy period yet and so won't be assigned to flights for another few years.
These numbers are only for NASA career astronauts; international astronauts, payload specialists, private astronauts, cosmonauts, taikonauts, and space tourists are not included. For the most part, including any of those would make the numbers look even worse. ESA got the memo on their most recent class, but Russia has exactly one female cosmonaut right now and China isn't doing much better.

These three versions of the same image taken by the Mast Camera (Mastcam) on NASA's Mars rover Curiosity illustrate different choices that scientists can make in presenting the colors recorded by the camera. The left image is the raw, unprocessed color, as it is received directly from Mars (and as available on the MSL Raw Images Web site: http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl/multimedia/raw/). The center rendering was produced after calibration of the image to show an estimate of "natural" color, or approximately what the colors would look like if we were to view the scene ourselves on Mars. The right image shows the result of then applying a processing method called white-balancing, which shows an estimate of the colors of the terrain as if illuminated under Earth-like, rather than Martian, lighting.

New Glenn exploded on the pad during a static test fire this evening. Nobody was hurt and the rocket uses non-toxic propellants, but definitely a set back for Blue Origin and launch market deconcentration.
