I'll never stop complaining about stolen audio jacks, but wireless noise-cancelling earbuds/headphones are a game changer. (even cheap ones! you can get a surprisingly decent pair for under $40. the tech has improved so much recently.)

The world is LOUD, much louder than it was just a century ago (motorized vehicles, overhead music everywhere). I'm autistic and noise-cancelling tech is what allows me to exist in public spaces. For me it's been life-changing. I honestly think most people would be less anxious/stressed if they were able to turn down the sound around them.

this constellation example is an amazing way of explaining it! occurrences become social phenomena when we give them a name and a set of rules/expectations around them. the name and rules/expectations are what is socially constructed.

for example, race is a social construct: obviously people are born to different racial backgrounds and have different racial appearances. it’s an objective, biological fact, and something that has been happening long before the term ‘race’ was even coined. that is the occurrence. however we have then socially constructed the term ‘race’ and all the stereotypes, expectations, limitations, etc within it

the same applies to mental illness being a social construct: the actual mental trouble an individual is facing is a biological, objective occurrence. whether or not it has a name, it still occurs. the actual terms related to it—mental illness; anxiety; adhd; stress; etc—have been socially constructed to label the biological occurrence. they then inherently come with connotations, expectations, and assumptions that are socially constructed. the concept of the meaning that we give to the word ‘mental illness’ is socially constructed, but that doesn’t make the mental troubles people face only ‘socially constructed delusions’

social construction is based soooo much on language!!! because it is through language that we understand and communicate ideas!! and by giving something a name we also give it a conceptual existence, connotations and assumptions.

Pmdd is premenstrual dysphoric disorder, it’s characterized by INTENSE pms symptoms, such as Intense depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation, which goes away after your period/shortly after it starts

Usually in my case it gets to the point where I’m legitimately planning out and weighing the pros and cons of suicide before the feeling goes away after my period comes. Like I’m posting about suicide but it’s in no way as unbearable of a feeling as earlier this week

#Yeah it sucks #I'm not currently diagnosed but my therapist thinks I might have it #I genuinely consider killing myself every time my period comes #And I mean I deal with suicidal ideation pretty regularly but it's not to that extreme #I've always felt scared to be diagnosed with pmdd though because it feels like my feelings are being dismissed as just being on my period #Even though I know that's not really the case
