Idk about twist outs
My hair looks like it has exploded into a large number of Oreida crinkle cut fries. That’s what my hair thinks of twist outs. I think the twist out on smaller twists looks like what other people get when they do a straw set. It’s never the wavy kind of thing I usually see on YouTube, even with varied textures. It’s this SHARPLY defined, usually explosive looking series of coils that I can hardly tell from the parts that are still twisted without using a mirror.
I’m curious to know if I will ever find a “hair twin” that has something similar to my texture, and actually posts vids. I love looking at them, and I get things out of their ideas, but I am hoping to find someone with a texture similar to mine so that I can get some more styling ideas. I’ve seen a few people who say they have 4c texture, but if I compare myself to them, or if I try to use these gradations, then I’d say my hair is about 6G. Seriously, the curl pattern is… Out of this world. My hair has snatched, hidden and broken combs in the past, no lie.
I’m ready to start pampering my hair, being more patient with it, and enjoying my texture - no longer stripping it away with relaxer (big chopped back in 2000), and no longer altering/hiding it with locs. My hair is basically “perfect” for locs, because it has a super tight coil, and basically locked up in three months. But then, it was doing what locs do, and I still wasn’t experiencing what my natural hair was like, nor was i experiencing all the versatility of my loose hair. I may get heat for this from locked naturals, but my experiences/thoughts are mine, so… whatever.
When it was loose before, I was very negative about it. I was glad not to have relaxer, And Jheri curl gone (yes, I had a curl LONG after it went out of style), but I was still angry that it was this mass of difficult to manage naps that seemed to fight me at every turn. But now I’m SO in love with my feisty hair, and I think it took having locs (which i LOVED, btw, don’t get me wrong) to help me appreciate my loose hair, and helped me to have patience with it and learn to listen to it. That’s one thing I noticed that lockers and loose hair ladies who post vids seem to have in common - listen to your hair, and don’t hate/fight the “imperfections”.
Though, I have absolutely no problem LAUGHING at the imperfections. :p
FINISHED!!!
It's 1:43am Sunday January 6th, and we just finished off the last two locs!!! I'm SO excited! Lol, my hair looks absolutely crazy. I took out all the small twists I'd put in before we left my mother in law's house, and picked them out. It was actually big enough for me to hide the last twenty locs, because my hair is thick. But then I twisted it back up because it was getting in the way of unlocking. But I used huge twists, about two square inches. It still took a while to put them all in, because OMG lots of hair. But, lol, the twists just stand up however. My hair has always been "poseable" as my wife says. But I was literally able to stand a twist up in any direction, and it would stay. Any direction except down, that is. It's late, and I'm not doing anything else tonight, but tomorrow ill post pics of the fro before washing, and then after I figure out what I'm going to do, I'll post pics of the finished style. Eeeee omfg loose hair! It's back and I can start to experience my true natural texture again!
Wow.
I will DEFINITELY be done this weekend - possibly before I go to bed. Between me and my wife, we did 25 locs (I did 21, actually, because I was flipping obsessed), and now that we're home, she's going to do the last 14 for me, or at least as many as she can do while we're watching "knight and day". Lol, my hands and my right arm are SO tired right now, lol omfg. But I kinda want to help out, because I really want to take my time washing, conditioning and styling tomorrow. I've been looking forward to using this deep conditioner I bought a couple of weeks ago. We're also going to the beauty supply store tomorrow to check out some styling stuff. I'm excited to try some new things. MOSTLY WHERE IS MY FRO I NEED IT RIGHT NOW.
So close!
39 left, and determined to get them done this weekend. I did 24 since the first, but those were weekdays. I'm DETERMINED to finish this weekend. I think my partner will help out. I just hope the visit to my mother in law doesn't mess up my plans. But it will be ok, I plan to stay up late tonight. Omg here's hoping!!
Progress Report
I've gotten quite a lot done! My partner got involved again, helping me take down locs, and one day over the holiday, I was able to actually do 14 myself, with her doing 7 the same day. Anyway, I have sixty-three left to take out. If we each take out seven, like we've been trying to do, I can be done by Saturday. If we end up taking out less, which may well happen since I'm back at work, then I'll bet I'm still done be Sunday at least, because I can make up for lost time on the weekend. OMG I'm so excited! Will definitely share pics when I'm all unlocked!
Getting there
So... I have about 115 locs left to take down. That means I did about 70 of them in 11 days. If I do about 7 per day, I could be done in two more weeks. I posted some pics of how they looked during the summer. I really loved them, but I really miss my loose hair, too. Haha, we trimmed those long ones at the bottom - I have no idea why they were so extra long, and I was going through this paranoid phase because I think the bleach was making my hair break off. I was certainly paranoid that it was, anyway, but who the hell knows.
I think I'm a little too shy to post any "transition" pics while I'm taking them down. Lol, don't TOUCH mah HAT! Remember Sinbad, y'all? XD
Hopefully back in two weeks with the finished product. Most likely back before then to whine about how long it's taking and how I'm just going to chop off the rest...
My locs this past summer.
OMFG I’m a little over half done taking out my locs. I ended up going to the party with my bangs in twists, and the lower third in twists (dyed blue, y’all!), and my locs in a ponytail. It worked! And I don’t think anybody knew the difference because no one at work would even know what to look…
I’d like to see the end result. I’m considering taking my locs down as well.
Sure, I’ll have to post some before and after pics. It may be another month or so if I’m realistic with myself…
I couldn’t wait! My husband cut my locs last night. I love it. Still hoping for pics of your transformation. All the best.
Oh wow! Well congratulations I’m glad you love it!! Haha I’m not ready to do a big chop again (chopped relaxer off in 2000), but I can certainly understand wanting your loose hair back fast! I just combed out some twists from the part I have undone, and saw another glimpse of what my fro could be, and I am SO READY to have this last bit done!
Do you have before and after pics? I’d love to see!

Mah haaaaair!!!!

Dyeing my hair in the back was AMAZING. I used less than a quarter of the amount of dye I usually used when my hair was locked back there, and rinsing it out took only a few seconds, rather than like ten minutes of the water never running clear ever. It was AMAZING. Dude.
I've noticed a few other things with my loose hair now. I love lists.
scalp feels better overall. Lately, I have been having a lot of itching, and some scabbing (TMI?), and I wash my hair every week, including a long-rinse, and apple cider vinegar rinse every other wash.
gel that I used to twist locs seemed to give my scalp a bad reaction, but when I used it to give some shine to my twists, I had absolutely no problems. I do not understand this. My best guess is that the locs were tugging just a little all the time, and my scalp was just kind of mad about it in general, so everything was starting to irritate it.
same with coconut oil, I used extra virgin coconut oil on my hair with no problems before locs, and for the first two and a half years of locs, then all of a sudden, my scalp was like NO! NO DON'T TOUCH ME. And now that I'm taking the locs out, my hair is all YAAAAY COCONUT OIL again. O_o
I have no explanation for these things. I notice that I did have some kind of build-up or lint in the locs - reminds me of when you take out braid extensions after a couple of months, and there's build-up at the attachment point, but instead it's throughout the loc. I'm not sure what one would do about this, since lint/build-up seems to be a universal problem. I don't like saying that locs are inherently "dirty", because that's a negative connotation that a lot of people get, and I don't really buy into it. But I was pretty obsessive about keeping build-up out of my locs, AND my locs are tiny, so it's not like stuff could get "stuck" in the core (or so I would think), but... there you have it.
I'll just say, my head was not liking whatever might have been happening. I started getting worried when I put braid extensions over my locs, and suddenly, my scalp felt better, and I had far less itching (after the locs were "hidden" in the synthetic hair). O_o ::side-eye::
I started with 530 locs (yes, I counted like two years ago - though some may have been combined since then). Now I have 179 left to take out. UGH and it's like in the thickest part of my hair (center/crown), and a lot of them are SUPER tiny, and I'm like MAYBE THE BOZO LOOK IS NOT BAD I'LL JUST USE SCISSORS. No. Not really. But kind of. It's okay, I'll get through it. Maybe I'll post some before and after pics or something. Or maybe I'll just keep running my mouth about it without ever letting anyone see. XD Who knows? I just know I can't wait to experience my loose hair again (all over). I miss MAH FRO, y'all. MISS. And I'm a little bit tired of this half n half stuff. It's awkward having to DO stuff to my hair every day to camouflage the mish-mosh.
Lol shrinkage
I spritzed the part of my hair that's loose, and combed it out. XD It shrunk down to 1 inch. My hair's like six inches long some places, and that's just stretched, not pressed. XD This is one of the things I missed about my loose hair vs. locs. Magic stretch properties to amaze your friends. (Lol, nevermind the fact that one of the reasons I put locs in was so that I could see the length all the time. I still missed my little magic fro.)
Awkwardness and self sabotage
So. I've had locs for 3.5 years now, and I decided to take them down early this October. Blah blah reasons, I'll save that for another post. Or not. Mostly, now I have this dilemma. I have my bangs undone and in 2-strand twists, and I have the back quarter done (undone), and then a small row around the sides (about an inch or two). In other words, I have this ring of 2-strand twists around my head, and locs in the middle, with a few undone locs that aren't even twisted, they're just floating there being fuzzy and lulzy.
So... now what? I have my company Christmas party on 12/15, and I seriously doubt I'll get the rest undone in time. I have small braidlocks, some of them small as sisterlocks, some slightly larger, so we're talking tapestry needle/metal rat-tail/straight pin removal here. My locked hair is about collar length, so it's not taking a full hour to take one down or anything, but it may take a good 10-20 minutes to get one out, depending on how long, how small, and how locked it is. I started with a little over 500 locs (I counted them last year or the year before). I decided to count them as I was taking them down, but that didn't last long - I got impatient with pausing to make check marks, so I stopped counting.
Anyway, so now I have this half-and-half hair. So far, wearing two fishtails seems to work well, but I'm a little concerned about what to wear for the party, and what to do with myself for however long it takes to get the rest of them down. I don't always like having my hair up, because the tension can get irritating, but I can't just let it be free, because the difference in length is super weird/awkward (the locs are longer than the twists, because the twists puff up, and shrink a bit). Lol, idk.
Lol, what have I done to myself?
