The child listened to him describe his situation, holding his breath and wiping his dirtied fingers on the small trousers he was wearing. How did someone live like that? Was this a normal thing? Xue Yang is watching the man’s face, hardly daring to blink. 

“C-can I?” His heart drummed against his ribcage as he slowly started to realize what such an offer would mean. Was it just for a little bit? Just for a night? Or was this more than he wanted to hope for, and he’d get more than just a sweet snack to eat? 

“Y-yes!” he answers breathlessly. “Yes, I want to come! Right now?” 

             ♞  — “I would not offer if you were not allowed.” Good answer! He gave them a smug grin. He was quick to reach out and secure the other’s waist. With little to no effort, he plucked them up as he stood.  

“Right now. You will be getting a bath, clothes, a warm meal, and a good place to rest. But first” He held them close  and, with a sleeve, cleaned the side of their face.  As he did this, he took to a calmer pace, walking down the  street as the sun began to set.

“What is this one’s name? You haven’t told me yet.”

With his attention turned to the soft, dusted threads of sugar in his fingers, Xue Yang does not see the morph of expression on the man’s face. It would have taken him aback, afraid that he may have answered in an undesirable way that he didn’t understand. But instead, he licks his fingers and hums with delight as he finishes the treat.

To both questions, Xue Yang shakes his head. He wipes at his face with the back of his hand - the sleeves of his clothes were well short of his wrist. A sprout indeed! “I take care of myself, and sometimes I sleep with some other kids like me,” he answers, unsure why these questions were being asked. But, he’s curious and leans forward slightly, interested. “What does Mister mean? How would he help?”

       ♞  —  This child did resemble Hauisang quite a bit. If not for how naive and unaware of surroundings he was. Well, in the end, his brother was growing up to be quite the coward. He still had trouble keeping conscious of what’s around him this very day. It was a headache to think of, but there were times in his childhood that he was just as wide eyed and curious for his own good.

What could he do?

Chìfēng-zūn  rubbed the bottom of his chin, his eyes closing. Iit was a fake contemplation, but he did like to see the kid’s reaction to all that he did.

“Hmm, what is it that I could do? This senior has a lot of money, yet he cannot seem to spend a single dime for himself. He has a big house with some empty rooms, and too much food.” 

He peeked an eye open, watching the child with care. 

“Would little stalk like to come with this mister? He can even give you better fitting clothes.”

“I will admit I haven’t gleaned any new or interesting information, no. But it brings ease to my heart to watch proceedings going along so peacefully, do you not agree?” In reality he had picked up a few interesting tidbits, but truly nothing of great use: a favorite tea here, a favorite song there… in the end, they were all things that could be used to curry favor in the future.

A momentary smile before he turns his watchful gaze back to the crowd. Someday that would be him instead of his father and he must absorb all he can while he is still but an observer.

“Though I do not agree with all of my father’s methods, one cannot deny he is skilled at running a sect.”

            ♞ —  Dark brown hues moved to observe the world around them. The area was bustling with life, even as the evening was carving it’s way through orange hued skies.  Though he thought of Meng yao’s father as a headache he could do without, he could not disagree with the state of his sect.

After some thought, he reached out and gave the other a rough pat on the back, causing him to move forward. 

“It is enough for now. Come. You are enough of a twig as is, you need to eat.” He began to walk to an inn. 

“Your Da-ge is treating you, be good and follow.”

“Ah, are you going to chastise me for people watching now, da ge~?” His pleasant smile does not falter even in the face of his stern sworn brother. “How will I know how to properly treat my guests if I do not spend some time observing them?”

               ♞ —  “Hmh.” He let out a heated huff. Sect Leader Nie took to closing the distance and, with the twist of his foot, stood right beside the other. His temper was seemingly nonexistent today. 

  “And? Have you found a resolve after standing here for over three hours?” He had been aware of their presence for quite some time.

                     ♞ — “Is there a reason you are in this corner?”

The ruffling of his hair didn’t bother him, because he’s focused on the threads of candy in his palms with a broad grin on his face. It was already between his lips, and he gingerly pulled it apart and hungrily scraped the sugar off his fingers with his teeth. The additional offer of food in exchange for an answer to a simple question made him pause, however.

Xue Yang looked up from the candy, licking the sugar threads from his lips which slowly lost his earlier smile.His wistfulness is apparent in his brows and in his voice. “Gege, this one doesn’t know where his parents are at. This one has never met them.” It wasn’t an unfamiliar question to be asked, but it was the first time someone asked him that and promised food in exchange for an answer. 

                   ♞ —  “...” His once humored demeanor faltered into a scowl. So this child was living on the streets, then? And if he were to think of their age and looks, they had been doing something to try and survive. It was unfortunate, especially if he remained homeless any longer. That would give a chance to shady folks to...

The way they were so kind and easy to persuade -- reminded him of his younger brother back home. The thought caused an ache to puncture his heart, if only a little.

His voice softened. “I see, then, does little stalk have any one to look after him? Does he have a comfortable place to sleep?” It was best to ask this just in case. “You do not have to answer this gege if it makes you unhappy. He will still treat you to food, but he might be able to help with more than that, if you are willing.”

The deal urges him on, even though his eyes follow the candy and he reaches for the candy left and right. Doing favors and small jobs in exchange for things he wants was normal, but this was an unusual request. Call the mister in front of him Nie-Gege? That was easy enough!

He stopped chasing the candy and held out his hands in front of him, palms up and looked beseechingly into the man’s face. “Please, Nie-gege! May I have the dragon’s beard?” 

              ♞ — “Very good!” He used his free hand to ruffle the top of the kid’s head. This kid had a strong voice, and had a good amount of manners. With that in mind, he dropped the candy in their hands. 

            “This gege has given you a treat, understand? He is willing to treat you to even food if little stalk can answer where his parents are?” 

      It had been on his mind for a while now. This child was wandering the area alone, dirty and without proper shoe ware. Was he lost? Were his parents careless? Sect leader Nie was not the type to ignore such things.

His eyes go as round as dishes and shine as they look up at the pale candy. Xue Yang can smell the sugar from where he stood! He couldn’t hide his craving for the sweet candy even if he tried. 

“I want it,” he finally admitted. “Mister, may I please have it?” 

            ♞ —  A very honest kid! The man couldn’t stop a laugh from escaping him. He grinned at the sight! “Hmm~? Little stalk wants this? How bold!” He snickered, resting his free hand on his knee. 

             “Does this little stalk really like this?” He moved the candy to the left.

              “Could this elder be kind enough as to grant him this?” To the right.

              “If this young man says 'please' once more, and calls this mister 'Nie-Gege', he will comply!”

“If mister doesn’t want it…” His eyes tracked the candy as it’s held over his head and he swallowed visibly while wringing his hands in front of his chest. “I know what you can do with it!” Grey eyes dart to the older man’s face, unsure of what to make of him.

         ♞ --- A chuckle as he watched their eager actions. “Oh? Now, what could this elder do? He would very much like to hear what this young man has in mind.”

          He dangled it playfully. “Come now, this mister is intent on hearing your answer.”

“I have! I really like dragon’s beard…” Attempts to hide his hungry eyes from the super thin strands of sugar are thinly veiled at best. 

            ♞ --- Ha! What an honest kid. He was thin, but just a tad taller than most boys his age. Like a little bamboo stalk. Sect leader Nie knelt down and held out the candy above him. 

                    “Hmm, what do to. I am not one for sweets, but I was given such a thing. Does this young man know what to do to solve such a problem?”
