You invited her in and made her a cup of tea.
You needed a bit of time to process this existence of a person that yes, you accept the responsibility for creating her but not bringing it into reality.
You gave her... what name had you given her again? It's been so long. You remember looking through all those unique baby names and their meaning, searching for the perfect one that just fits. You also remembered changing it a few times.
First, it was Anika, then Hilda and then...
"Elpida, right?" You said as you handed her the cup which she accepted.
That was a good sign... hopefully.
Elpida gave you a thin smile. "I am grateful that you remember me."
"I do. Just took me a while to remember." You replied. "I created you."
"You did and you left. Abandoned me and the world you created."
You remembered that you gave her a sharp tongue and the fury of a sun.
That was the big question.
She had black hair like yours and eyes a brilliant gold that you wish you had. She had dark blue scales dotting her cheekbones and sides of her neck to show the dragon blood in her veins. Her sword, Night Seeker, hung by her side.
In short, the person you envied and yet seeked to be.
You took in a short breath and laughed.
"I have so many excuses I could say. I didn't have time. I was too busy. I had my heart broken. I thought that I didn't have what it takes to finish it. But none of them are true."
Elpida was listening. Logical and reasonable. Just like you wrote her to be. Even if her anger raged in her eyes.
The truth was that you were afraid.
The 'Flames of Night' was your first time writing down the stories in your head. You poured your heart into it. You put everything you had into it. Each day, when you came home, you opened that little book reserved just for writing Flames of Night and wrote.
You wrote about Elpida's childhood and how happy she was.
You wrote about Elpida meeting her wise mentor who laid out the path for her.
You wrote about all the friends that Elpida made out of her enemies by using her wit and charm. One of them destined to be her true love.
You wrote about Elpida and her talent to be good at everything on the first try.
You wrote about Elpida finding the Night Seeker and going on a journey and travel her world.
You wrote so you could be Elpida and not you. You who didn't had the happiest childhood.
You who didn't have someone wise to support you and show you how you should love your life. You who stumbled on your own path blindly and tried to make the best out of it.
You who was alone with neither enemies or friends to fight, love and laugh with. You who wanted a prince that saw the worst in you and still thought yes, this is the woman I love.
You who easily got frustrated and gave up too easily and never master the skills you wished you had.
You who wished to have something to defend yourself from being hurt.
You who wished to see the world other than the grey world of your home.
You had great memories of Elpida. So the question was whay did you let her go?
"The truth is that I outgrew you."
"I could no longer keep writing your adventures. Not when I was going on my own."
"Half of the reason I was writing was because I was jealous. You had everything handed to you on a silver platter. I made it that way but yet, i couldn't help but resent you for it."
She waited for you to continue, eyes knowing.
"There was a day when I came home mad. My parents certainly didn't make it better. The book was there and I had wrote your wedding to Percival. And how happy you were. And I..."
You closed your eyes. Not brave enough to see Elpida's face once she learned the truth.
"I wanted to kill you. I had it all planned out in my head on how you were going to die. I nearly did it..." You confessed. "But the pen I was using... the ink ran out. So I couldn't do it."
You remember the shock you felt as you realized what was going on.
For all that you resent and envy Elpida for her perfect life. You loved her as your own child. For she was birthed from your mind. Breathed in life through the strokes of your pen.
And you were going to murder her. An innocent who didn't deserve your anger.
That's when you realized that you had to get your shit together.
Clearly, Elpida wasn't ever going to come out of that little book and magically fix your grades, make you friends, or deal with your parents.
And you found something more.
"I got what I wanted. My own adventures, my own friends, even the love of my life. So the reason I forsake you was because you got your happy ever after. It was time for me to go find mine."
