it does bother me a lot that aot fans are somehow unable to comprehend that the subjects of ymir in marley are an oppressed racial minority living under a fascist apartheid. they are dehumanized, segregated into an internment zone, and exploited as military weapons, and this treatment is underpinned by a lot of propaganda and historical distortion. racism against them is largely perpetuated due to this fact, they are integral for marley to consolidate their power and pursue their colonial policies and solidify themselves as the world leading hegemon. titans have to be turned! this was historically their fate, even during the eldian empire, it just took a different shape. you have to critically think about what titan warfare actually has to look like. there is a reason the predatory warriors program is designed to target children. there is a reason the truth of the founder ymir is revealed to be what it is: she was a conquered child turned into an exploited slave by king fritz for eldia’s expansionism. what does the curse of ymir entail? who would be willingly titanized? why did historia’s father try to trick her into taking the burden of a shifter instead of him? titans and the subjects of ymir as they exist in the present of the story are the product of centuries of brutal and unethical human experimentation for warfare, it happened under eldian rule, and it continues under marley. eldia was an atrocious and despicable empire responsible for countless horrors that is supposed to be the mirror to marley today, and the actual reality of it is constantly reframed by different factions to emphasize that hegemonic forces are what ultimately determine “truth”, and historical distortion is also at the root of these cycles of history repeating. on paradis too, ignorance was an ideological state apparatus, and this has devastating consequences.
