Last night on life with a hound: she rolled in poop and tried to make me feel guilty because she was covered in poop.
Yurio: the one who “gets it”
There’s a reason people really adore Yuri Plisetsky. Here’s why I do. Because he takes seriously the things everyone else assumes is a joke.
Victor leaving to become Yuuri’s coach? Everyone else thinks it’s some weird phase he’ll grow out of. Not Yurio, who hunts him down to Hasetsu and demands that Victor return to Russia and be his coach. Yurio took Victor’s coaching seriously, and he took Yuuri’s challenge seriously, even when he was the only one who did.
And we see the results of this. First off, Victor choreographed a wonderful short program, and forced Yuri to pay attention. And Victor and Yuuri became Yurio’s biggest cheerleaders. Yurio “hated it”, but I think we all know that… for all Yurio’s teen angst and bluster, there’s a good heart in there. And Victor and Yuuri see right through that facade.
Yurio watches Yuuri like a hawk, following every routine. Getting mad when Yuuri flubs. Getting mad when Yuuri fails to see how talented a skater he is. And Yurio’s anger tends to be… righteous.
How dare Yuuri steal Victor all for himself and then walk away! How dare Yuuri pretend he’s not that good a skater! How dare Yuuri fall apart when he skates then acts so down! How dare Yuuri think about retiring when he’s not peaked yet!
Yurio pushed himself past his ability not thinking about Victor, but about Yuuri retiring. About wanting to punish Yuuri by getting the gold and making sure that he stayed skating at least another year.
Yurio proved that he took Victor seriously as a coach (when no one else did), and he proved that he took Yuuri seriously as a rival (when no one else did.)
We don’t have to wonder why Victuuri adore Yurio. He’s a talent who is on the rise in the sport, but so too he’s someone with a good heart, and in his earnest way, the first to say “yeah Victor is a great coach and Yuuri is a great rival–fight me if you’re stupid enough to think otherwise.”
And let’s face it, Yurio was right all along.
