Poverty
On Sunday, I volunteered at a local food pantry/transitional housing facilities. One of the workers there (maybe a volunteer) was telling us about his experience being there for two weeks. He said that he noticed that it was strange. Breakfast was always busy and so was dinner, but lunch was sporadic. The man said that after talking to some of the residents, he learned that if anyone ever has an appointment in the morning (doctor, etc), they will never make it back for lunch. Why? Columbus has a very archaic bus system. Where this facility is located, it takes almost 2 hours to take the bus to get there--it’s only an 11 minute drive from downtown. If one has an appointment at 9, they practically have to leave at 6:30 to make it and then a round trip is almost half a day.
This really got to me and I have been thinking about it since. I suppose it shows that once you are in that situation, it really is nearly impossible to break from it.
