Shokugeki no Souma Recipe #2 – Improvised Mackerel Burger Meal
The second bonus recipe featured in Shokugeki no Soma is the Improvised Mackerel Burger Meal. Its an important plot dish, since this meal allowed Souma to pass the Polar Star Initiation Test.
So what about the dish itself?
A burger patty that isn’t made of beef isn’t a totally revolutionary concept. I’ve tried several vegetarian patty like mushroom and beans, to name a few. Though, this is the first time I’ve known that fish could be used as the main patty ingredient.
My first thought was wouldn’t the meat taste fishy?
Unlike vegetables like mushroom and beans, I know mackerels and tunas have a distinct taste that might be pretty hard to cover up. Curious, I made it on the kitchen and while it didn’t turn out to be aesthetically pleasing (my burger looks like a misshapen lump of clay than a circle), it tasted good, if perhaps a little bit bland. Don’t worry though, the blandness would go away the moment you pour the sauce on the patty leaving you with a delicious treat.
Also, contrary to my worries, there isn’t any fishy taste on the meat itself. In fact, depending on what brand you get, you’ll probably get the fishy taste more on the sauce side.
Nutrition-wise, this is perhaps healthier than the usual burger, since it’s not made of red meat. Mackerel have a lot of omega-3 fatty acids. Canned fishes also have the same nutrition as fresh.
As for the way, it was used in the plot.
I suppose that the dish shows how creative Souma is, how he can make do even with so little.
But, to me, as someone who lived in the dorms; I appreciate the symbolism of Souma passing the dorm test with a delicious meal made of leftovers. In the dorms, there are many times when you have to make do with leftover food or cook canned meals or instant food.
The fact that Souma passed the test using both types of test makes me happy.
Its almost like a stealth nod to us poor students. ^^

I noticed how strangely appropriate the character pieces are.
Knights - Soma and Takumi It is often said that Soma and Takumi are almost the same character so its nice that they are depicted as the same piece. In chess, knights are the unconventional ones. The ones who can cross obstacles unassailable by other pieces. Because of their unique movement, they are the threat that someone unfamiliar with chess cannot see coming. Also, the only piece that can threaten the queen without being threatened in turn.
Bishop -Megumi Early game, bishops aren't useful. But, if you position your pieces correctly (i.e not obstructing the bishops path), the bishop can shine better than even the knight. On the other hand, improper positioning of other pieces could lead the bishop getting stuck.
On, bishop and knights, some people have preference for one or the other. For me, they are about equal. In chess, they have a value of 3 with the bishop getting a .5 if properly developed.
Rook - Erina In the early stage of the game, the rook is the piece that castle so you can protect your king. But, its the later stages of the game where the rook shine. Its the only piece other than the queen who can be placed on every single tile of the game. And also, the only piece other than the queen wherein one can singlehandedly win the game.
You can't win a game if the only piece you have is a singe knight+ king. Ditto with a bishop+king. But, it is possible if you have a rook+king.
In chess literature, Rooks are worth 5 points compared to the knights and bishops 3 points. Which is appropriate, for Erina who even now is still considered the strongest of the first years. Also, freaking relevant because like the rook, Erina only gets to be on play at the endgame.
King=Gin and Saiba King which is Gin and Saiba could denote how they are the leader of the respective team. Also, could show how the game would be already lost without them since the rebels lack any authority and Azami would not have agreed to the bet.
Finally, kings even though they are the most importantly pieces have the weakest board presence. Perhaps, it denote that how Gin, Saiba and Azami can't really affect the victory condition much due to regulation, friendship or stuff. But, its up to the rebels - the other pieces in the boardgame to move and seize victory.
