Oh hey. Lucas is a year old today.

Lucas was still trying to wrap his head around all of this. He didn’t know what they were supposed to do, or where they would go from here. He knew their families would be just as devastated as they were. Maya was probably getting ready to punch out a nurse just to get into their room to see Riley.
He was staring at a random spot on Riley’s bedsheet, thumb absently dragging back and forth across her knuckles. Being told to go was what brought him back to the real world.
His brow furrowed as he looked back at her and he shook his head, shifting closer to her in the process. “What? No. I’m not going anywhere, Riley,” he promised. He wrapped an arm around her, hugging her against him. “Me neither,” he admitted quietly. Out of everything they’d been through, separately and together, nothing was as earth shattering as this, as losing their children before they even got a chance. He didn’t even know how to start coming back from this, if there was even a coming back from this.
But leaving? That didn’t sound like the way to start.
It was hard for Riley to process this. She lived in a world where nothing that bad ever really happened, but how was she supposed to justify this? In what world was this fair? She felt like glass. Any sudden movement would shatter her into a million little pieces.
Riley didn’t want to see anyone, she didn’t even want to be awake. If anything she wished it was her and that the twins survived. That would have been worth it, it would have made more sense to her than any of this. They were just two innocent babies and they didn’t deserve this.
As Lucas’s arm wrapped around her she was torn between continuing to push him away or just sinking him into him. “It’s my fault,” she finally muttered, choosing to not push him away. He was fighting her on it and she didn’t have the energy to keep up. All she wanted to do was disappear and never look back. “If I had just taken better care of them then this wouldn’t have happened,” she continued he voice breaking. “Please don’t hate me, Lucas,” she sobbed as she buried her face in his shirt, clutching it as she tried t keep from completely crumbling.
“Hey, no, shh,” he murmured, tightening his arms around her. “This is not your fault, Riley.” He didn’t know who to blame. The universe? God? Charlie, somehow, if he could? But it wasn’t Riley. Never Riley. “You did everything you could for them. None of this is your fault. I could never hate you.”
He held her close, pressed his face into her hair, let her cry. He felt tears burn at his own eyes. There was no fathomable way to make this okay, to fix this. But he wished he could. Wished he could put the pieces they were crumbling in to back together.
Lucas was supposed to be meeting the others at Topanga’s to do homework, he’d just gotten there early. Finding Mina in a rather distressed state brought a frown to his lips and concern filled him. “Hey, Mina… Is everything okay?” he asked, for the moment ignoring her offering to get his order. That wasn’t important right then.
The blonde appreciated that he seemed concerned. It wasn’t very often that anyone asked her what was going on with her. “Just some jerk who thought he could grab me,” she shook her head. “It isn’t a big deal, happens all the time. I’m probably just being sensitive about it.” She worked as a model, she should be used to creeps by now. She just thought it might change if she worked here, but it seemed like it didn’t. “Anyway, enough about me. What can I get you? I’m sure your friends will be here any second.”
Lucas’s frown only deepened when she said what was wrong. “It happens all the time doesn’t make it not a big deal, Mina. If anything, that makes it worse,” he said. Seeing her upset and knowing it was because of some creep definitely didn’t sit well with him, and he wished he could do more for her. “You sure there’s nothing I can do?” What he wanted could wait, it didn’t matter if his friends were showing up soon or not.

He figured pointing out that he didn’t specify how deep a cut it was wouldn’t go over well. He had a towel pressed to the slice in his palm. “Got into a fight with a kitchen knife… Knife won,” he murmured.
“You are not funny,” she glared at him. “Come on, I will drive,” she grabbed his keys out of his pocket. Whenever someone she loved was hurt Riley turned into a total mom, ready and willing to do anything that was needed. She grabbed a fresh towel. “Here just put it on top. If the towel latched onto your skin, you don’t want to make the bleeding worse, this will start absorbing if it soaks through the other one.” As they got down to the car she opened the door for him and helped him buckle up. “What were you trying to do in the kitchen?” she asked as she started up the car.
Lucas didn’t fight it, fight her leading him out and obeyed and placed the fresh towel over the first one. “Yes, ma’am,” he murmured as he followed her down to the car. “I was trying to cut things, that weren’t me. And it slipped,” he explained as he settled into his seat, not fighting her assistance. He tightened the towel around his hand, hissing softly at the pain.
“I’d find a way to get us there,” Lucas agreed. He wrapped his other arm around her in addition to the first and hugged her closer, if that were even possible. Whatever he could do to make her happy and comfortable.
“Of course we can,” he assured. “Like I said, I just want to be with you.” He ran a hand over her hair and let the other rub her arm gently. “If you want we could curl up in your bed and you can take a nap?” he offered. He was willing to risk Mr. Matthews stabbing him through the eye with a spoon if he came in to find him in his daughter’s bed.
Riley nodded her head and moved over to her bed. She curled up next to Lucas, staying close to him as she shut her eyes. She couldn’t really sleep because she couldn’t turn her brain off, but the cuddling was nice. It made this all feel a little easier. Instead of feeling like a forty pound weight, it felt like a thirty-pound weight crushing her chest. After a bit in silence, the brunette kept her gaze away from him. “Lucas?” she asked him her voice shaking slightly. “Do you ever regret it? Being with me?” she chewed her lower lip. She wasn’t really sure why she was asking. Maybe because she felt insecure most of the time, but she did. “I just think that are a lot better choices out here for you and I’m plain ‘ol me. Riley Matthews, the ordinary girl.”
Lucas followed her to her bed, laying down and holding her close. He carded a hand through her hair again, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. He didn’t know exactly what was bothering her, so he didn’t know exactly how to help, but he hoped to do what he could to ease whatever was burdening her.
“Hm?” he hummed, peering down at her. His brow furrowed and he frowned at the question. Where was that coming from? “What? No. Never,” he assured, squeezing her closer. “Riley, you’re anything but plain. You’re the best thing that ever happened to me. You’re my sunshine. You, Riley Matthews, are my favorite person in the world, and I can’t imagine my life without you. Don’t want to either.”
Lucas chuckled softly and leaned to press a kiss to her throat. “Because I like to try and keep things interesting. And that little surprised face you make is always worth it,” he mused, letting his fingertips lightly trace up and down her inner thigh.
She giggled, tilting her head even further to give him more access. “I like when you keep things interesting.” She flipped them over so she pinned him back on the couch. “And I like to keep you guessing too.” She pressed kisses along his jaw as her hands ran up his side.
Lucas grinned when they were flipped over. “I do like guessing,” he sighed, tipping his head back to let her kiss wherever she wanted. He slid his hands up her thighs and squeezed her hips.
Lucas laughed to himself, turning his head to playfully bite at her hip. “Hey now, I’m a cowboy, not a horse,” he reminded. It didn’t take too much longer though to get to his car, and when he did, he finally sat her down on her feet, only to push her up against it as he kissed her hard.
She squealed when he bit at her lip, then smacked his butt again. “You’re my cowboy,” she muttered before she was placed back down on her feet. She just had a moment to meet his eyes before she was being kissed hard, her hands clinging to him as she kissed him back just as roughly.
Lucas bit at her lips and stroked his tongue against them a moment later. He squeezed at her hips and pushed his hands up under her shirt, stroking her sides. He pressed kisses down her throat, nipping and sucking at her skin. “M’guessing when you asked about my car,” he murmured between kisses, “your plan wasn’t to make out against it, right?”
“I’m gonna be offended by that later. I have lots of good ideas,” he murmured against her lips between kisses. He let a hand drag up under her shirt, stroking her side as he deepened the kiss again, nipping at her lips.
“Uh huh, whatever you say baby,” she replied with a chuckle before it was swallowed by his lips again. One of her legs wrapped around him as she moaned softly at the nip at her lips. “God, I want you so bad.”
Lucas hummed against her lips and rolled his hips against hers slowly. “Whatever you want.” He pulled back enough to tug her shirt off, then he was kissing her again, licking his way into her mouth.
Lucas brushed her hair out of her face as he nodded. “Yeah I get it. That’s fine,” he assured. As much as he loved spending all their free time together, he knew the girls still needed their Riley and Maya time, and he didn’t want to monopolize all of Maya’s time. He dropped another kiss to her lips and offered a half smile. “We can reschedule our movie night for another night.”
“We will reschedule our movie night for another night,” she corrected, brushing her thumb along his jaw as she cupped his cheek before leaning up to kiss him sweetly again. “I should get going. I’ll text you?”
Lucas smiled, leaning into her touch before returning her kiss. “Yes, ma’am,” he agreed. “Okay. I’ll see you later. And I look forward to your text.” He leaned to kiss her again, then kissed her forehead. “Have fun with Riley.”
Lucas nipped her lips gently while he gently pinched at her nipple, teasing. “I’ll give you everything you need,” he murmured in promise against her lips. He rocked his hips slowly into hers as he kissed her again, licking his way into her mouth. He let his hand drag back down her body, fingertips teasing along the waistband of her panties.
Small gasps continued to fall from her lips as he pinched her nipple and nipped at her lips. “You better,” she replied breathlessly. Her tongue met his and ran along the roof of his mouth before she pulled away and nipped at his bottom lip. “Stop teasing,” she insisted, slipping a hand between them to brush along his hardening length.
Lucas shivered as she brushed against his length. “I like teasing you,” he murmured with a soft grin. But he did give in, sitting back enough to peel Maya’s panties down and off. He leaned down to press kisses down her stomach as he settled between her legs. He dragged his hands up her inner thighs and pressed them further apart. He peered up at her with a small smirk before he leaned in to drag his tongue between her lips and swirling it around her clit.

That question felt so un-Riley-like, it made Lucas’s stomach turn all over again. Surely it was a test of some kind. If nothing else, the heat of the moment. Because that wasn’t something Riley would demand. Right? “You wouldn’t ask that of us. Not really,” he said softly. She loved Maya too much for that. “We know this is a lot to take in, but we’re not going to break up if you don’t like us being together,” he agreed. He and Maya had already decided that, going into this. As much as he knew they both cared about Riley, they cared about each other, too. Too much to break up just to make Riley happy. Especially when it wouldn’t actually succeed in making her happy, it would only succeed in making them all miserable.
Riley remained serious before sighing and nodding. “If this is something you two are really serious about, then I’ll get over it. I love you both, and I just want you to be happy. If that’s with each other, then how could I stand in the way of that?” she asked, causing Maya to smile softly. Maya let go of Lucas’s hand to walk up and hug her best friend. “Thank you… I am happy. Happier than I’ve been in years. That’s all because of Lucas,” she admitted, looking back at her now-not-so-secret-boyfriend.
Lucas felt a small rush of relief as Riley spoke again. He was sure things would even out with time, once she had time to digest them being together. He was just glad she wasn’t going to press them breaking up for her. He didn’t protest Maya letting him go, but he stayed where he was, watching the girls, and he gave Maya a small smile when she looked back at him. “Thank you, Riley.”
Lucas leaned into her touch, hands coming up to grasp her wrists gently, thumbs rubbing against them gently. “Okay,” he said softly. It didn’t magically make his worry go away entirely, but it helped. He turned his head to press a kiss to her palm. “I love you.”
Maya hated seeing how much the idea of losing her to Josh hurt him. She didn’t think he worried so much about it since she admitted her true feelings to him, but clearly she wasn’t the only one worried this would come to a tragic end. “I love you too. More than I’ve loved anyone. Nothing and no one can change that, I promise.”
Confidence had always been something Lucas was sorely lacking in. As the years went by, he had just grown better at hiding that. Fake it ‘til you make it was a general rule of thumb with him when it applied. Things rarely shook him to the point his worries showed through. But the idea of losing Maya, that definitely left him shaken. He managed a small nod at her words, squeezing her wrists gently. “Good. Same goes for the other way around, you know,” he said softly.
“You’re the one who told me we needed to stop,” he pointed out, a teasing grin on his lips. “I’m only doing what I’m told.”
“Well if we don’t stop, I’ll make sure you’re too tired to go to this party, and I know how much you want to go,” she pointed out.
“You’re so mean to me, baby,” Lucas sighed, but his smile didn’t falter. “And I did stop. But then you complained that I did like you told me to.”
