Here to offer a couple of my Kyoshi pen doodles (yeah I fucked up one of her hands and have no way to fix it because. pen.) as the first atla-verse fanart I've posted. Her freckles are my absolute favourite detail to add in.

This is one of my favourite lines in the Kyoshi novels because it completely reframes who Kyoshi is.

People love reducing her to “the violent Avatar,” but that’s not what Lao Ge is saying. He’s saying Kyoshi is what happens after every peaceful option has failed.

She isn’t diplomacy. She isn’t politics. She isn’t compromise.

She is the point where diplomacy has already died.

“There is no escalation of hostilities beyond her” isn’t saying Kyoshi enjoys violence. It’s saying that if the Avatar herself has decided to intervene, you’ve already reached the absolute limit. There is nothing left to negotiate.

It’s also why I think people misunderstand Kyoshi so often. Throughout the novels she repeatedly tries to reason with people, show mercy, and restore balance without unnecessary bloodshed. But once she concludes that someone cannot be reasoned with, she acts decisively.

Kyoshi isn’t the first step. She’s the last.

I feel like Rangi is very soft for nicknames.

If she ever found out that Kyoshi calls her „her glowing girl” when thinking about her she would probably just combust on the spot.

I feel like the flying opera company being a daofei group should have been elaborated on more.

Well they were criminals who worked for Mok. So they probably took the lives or ruined the lives of innocents before, no?

They talk a lot about how they didn't choose this life but this life chose them, but they hardly ever touch on how exactly this path they took made them do things that were not at all morally right.

I think we should have had a moment where there was a shift between them being „proper” daofei and then being like freedom fighters of some kind.

I don't think it was needed as an actual plot point but it also does feel like FC Yee just kind of brushed over that in m opinion

I get that Kyoshi being in the Netflix avatar series is fanservice, but which fans are they servicing with mentioning Jesa and Hark instead of Rangi or Yun or literally any other actually relevent character?

Another round of quotes, this time from Shadow of Kyoshi. Absolutely breezed through the second book, finished it in two days. How did I leave the Kyoshi novels on my shelf unread for two years ;;

The „Personally I don't see the difference” line actually isn't just kyoshi being cool and badass.

It also shows that she doesn't really care how exactly a problem is solved as long as it has a good solution.

She herself doesn't have to be the one to do a good deed in order for it to solve a worldwide issue.

Which is why she was also the one to make two groups of trained warriors (kyoshi warriors & dai lee) to uphold balance for her.

Kyoshi still relies on people after her death to do what she would want.

She is essentially telling Aang that he doesn't have to do it himself or alone in a way.

Do you think suki knows what kyoshi's face paint actually represents that it's the symbol of a society of criminals

It doesn't represent that at the time. It's the thing it was derived from. The origins of the face paint holds hardly any weight by the point of Alta, since it is mainly based on kyoshi herself and showing alliance to her rather than to the flying opera company, who themselves also stood by kyoshi and thus did mainly good after kyoshi joined them.

She probably does? Overall Suki is presented to have a decent amount of knowledge on the history of kyoshi so I don't think that it would be something that she would be unaware of. Also I don't think kyoshi would feel the need to hide where the face paint came from since she does value truth quite a bit.

Imagine if Kelsang and jianzhu had split up in their search for the avatar and found Kyoshi and yun separately.

Both of them have arguments speaking for them (Kyoshi has the poem and her immense strength) (yun has his pai sho and his impressive precision) but neither of them can firebend (yun isn‘t a firebender and Kyoshi has a mental block).

I think it would be interesting tbh.

Yun would probably have the most elaborate hair and skin care out of all of them btw. Mainly because he is the avatar and has to keep up appearances. He mainly focuses on his skin though. Gets Hei-ran and Rangi to give him hair care tips because he needs to look acceptable by fire nation Standard too.

Rangi also does her skin and hair care but a lot more minimally. Because she is still a soldier and her care products have to be so little that she can take them on the road (because she is not pausing a routine for a battle. She has to pull through with everything). Mainly focuses on her hair (because fire nation) and gets kind of irritated whenever kyoshi just doesn't take care of her hair but still has it look so flawless. Only uses scented hair oils (crashes out when someone buys the wrong one).

Kyoshi doesn't use any kind of care for her face or hair. But she does have it in her room (thanks to auntie mui). She just gives them to other people sometimes or just let's them sit there. Thinks that cremes feel weird on her skin and that they smell bad so she doesn't use them. One of the people who comb their hair by just ripping it lowkey. Rangi eventually forces her into skin and hair care after she starts wearing her make up.
