does anybody have a picture of all the different dress forms perfectly sized to the old hollywood actresses that used to be in paramount, or warner brothers, or I don't remember where's costume department? like I have seen this picture a THOUSAND times, I can picture it in my head, I think Bette Davis may be in it staring at the Bette Davis dress form. I need it for a presentation tomorrow and Google has forgotten what dress and form and old hollywood mean

for anyone wondering why they did this, having these custom dress forms meant that they could jump right into draping/fitting pieces for stars as soon as they were cast. this level of specificity with measurements and proportions is so key to design and why the custom clothes from these old movies go so hard in ways off-the-rack can only occasionally nail.

just a friendly reminder for everyone that your body is never the problem. it is always gorgeous. you just need clothes that fit you right and meet you where you are.

Did you hear the scientists have found a way to grow colored cotton? Thoughts?

There’s actually been a load of vitriol leveled against folks who try to raise traditional colored cottons, because a lot of cotton growers don’t want the colored cottons cross-pollinating with their standard white cotton.

But anyway cotton can be grown in lovely natural shades of greens, reddish-brown ochres, and browns, all of which deepen with a good boil in water with a bit of washing soda thrown in.

The color obviously doesn’t fade or run, because it’s not dye. It’s the intrinsic color of the fiber itself.

Scientists did not "just find out", and this is more of the same anti intellectual bs as the post that goes around claiming archaeologists were too stupid to know that hair could be sewn for elaborate styles.

Anyway, scientists DID figure out how to grow colored cotton. They genetically engineered it to be bright fuckin pink, and they didn't "just find out" about it, they already knew which is literally what inspired them to attempt the thing they just accomplished. Begging y'all to stop pretending that scientists don't know things, don't have interests, don't grow up in farming communities or have family who taught them this. Scientists are people. Do you seriously think people who use genetic engineering to make eco-friendly pink cotton don't know anything about textiles?

Yes. CSIRO scientist Doctor Colleen MacMillan led the team that figured this out. They used tobacco plants for testing because of the genetic similarity. Basically if the tobacco leaves produced colors when injected with a bit of the experimental genetic material, the scientists on the team already understood that the color change would affect cotton bolls as well.

They grew bright red and bright yellow in a petri dish.

Additionally folks are researching how to create flame resistant cotton and black cotton. If a variety of black cotton becomes viable, it can stop a LOT of environmental damage caused by chemical manufacturing of black dye.

Shitalpati (Bengali: শীতল পাটি) is a mat woven from cane or murta plants, originally from the Sylhet region of Bangladesh. The murta plant (Schumannianthus dichotomus) grows around water bodies in Sylhet. The main bearers and practitioners are weavers living mostly in the low-lying villages in the greater Sylhet region of Bangladesh, but there are also pockets of Shital Pati weavers in Barisal, Tangail, Comilla, Noakhali, Chittagong and other areas of the country. After the partition of Bengal, Shitalpati weaving was kept alive among Sylheti refugees in India, and eventually Coochbehar and Jalpaiguri became prominent centres.

Shitalpati is usually rectangular in shape which can be rolled up to put away. When spread on the floor or bed, its upper surface appears glossy and smooth while the inner surface is rough. The people all over Bangladesh use it as a sitting mat, bedspread or praying mat. Although made of flat, thin strips of green cane, its natural look is brown in finished form. The weaving pattern gives it a texture akin to a jigsaw puzzle. The weavers are known as patial or patikaar (meaning 'mat-maker'). Sometimes the cane strips are woven in a way so as to create motifs of birds, animals, flowers and leaves or other symmetric patterns.

this is mind boggling levels of insane. if you've never done needlefelting you can't quite comprehend how fucking difficult it is to not only make things so precise at such a small scale but like, not get the fibers tangled into literally everything else they interact with. and then ANIMATING it??? bro this is witchcraft

The closest experience I've ever had to discovering "the vitamin" was buying a 100% wool outfit and wearing it in the winter.

Not only was I not freezing anymore, I was not sweating and overheating either. The horrible sensory nightmare of winter clothes disappeared.

In particular, I bought a pair of wool pants. They were a thrifted pair of fancy dress pants like you would wear at an important office job, and they were easily the most comfortable pair of winter-appropriate pants i'd ever worn. I wore them Every Single Day.

From that point on I realized a lot of my clothes were making me feel bad, and the common thread was polyester. Especially polyester blends.

It's a trap because the polyester clothes are the ones that always feel sooooo silky soft when they are in the store, whereas cotton, linen and wool can feel comparatively rough and scratchy. But when actually wearing them for hours throughout the day, it's the natural fibers that feel more comfortable.

Maybe the secret to sensory comfort is not about the presence of softness, but the absence of overloading sensations. Or maybe the sensory stress and agony is not triggered by texture of the fabric, but by how it breathes and regulates temperature.

Then there's the problem of clothing life span: polyester blends, no matter how soft they seem at first, become rough and scratchy and covered in hard, itchy pills after wearing them 10 or 20 times, whether or not they have been tumble-dried or even washed at all. (I tested it!) Linen and cotton become softer and more comfy the more you wear them, polyester but ESPECIALLY polyester blends become a constant stressor. Polyester blend t-shirts I used to love for their softness now feel bristly and irritating.

So now I'm trying to change my wardrobe to as many natural fibers as possible, and the more natural fiber clothes i have the more I realize that the plastic fibers stress me out. It's so easy to overheat or freeze in them and they're always degrading and becoming less comfortable and it sucks.

A lot of wool items are scratchy but some of them are not. There's a whole spectrum of scratchiness and I haven't figured out what the commonality is. I bought one wool sweater that is 100% too scratchy to wear without an under-layer (and haven't worn it yet), and a different wool sweater that is soooo cozy and comfy and not scratchy at all.

Why is wool so unpopular? My professor was talking about how the school used to keep a herd of sheep for educational purposes but wound up selling them because the wool was so worthless they ended up using it to mulch greenhouse plants. Wool is a miracle. I love you wool thank you sheep

like sure I also hate polyester for the environmental impacts (its a huge part of microplastics) but isn't it infuriating that this environmentally harmful material we are using everywhere also just...sucks way worse than the natural alternatives

The last days of the petition against conversion therapy are FASCINATING to watch. I have been following it pretty closely for almost a year now, and the progress was, above all, steady. There was this jump when some algorithm in Finland picked it up, but even that was local.

And now, everyone is panicking.

Which really shows.

These past three or four days, multiple countries have reached the threshold. Even more notably, the number of signatures in total, the ones that we need to get one million of, are growing rapidly. There are only 400'000 signatures missing. Two days ago, it was closer to 600'000.
