(She can get where he’s coming from, though. All the costumes in the world couldn’t exactly hide how much her retainers stuck out personality-wise compared to other kingdoms’.) 

    “I–… Well, I’d say I’ve got Tai and Katsu, but I don’t suppose either of them are going to be very helpful, are they?” Katsu was still sulking about not being allowed his bow and Taiki was… Taiki. 

“ ‘xactly! Those idiots aren’t gonna be any help!” Not that he could really blame Katsu. Between the leg and lack of bow, it wasn’t his fault that he would fail in the line of duty. Taiki, however...oh, he was getting a scolding of a hangover tomorrow! Who scolded who on being a solider all these years?!?

"Ah can’t relax! Ah dunno who’s anybody is! What if this is all just a...a--!!” The word ‘assassination attempt’ hung on his tongue, drowned by the cup or two of sake he’d already indulged in. “Why couldn’t we’a just stayed in ‘rora? What ‘bout the festivals and the ceremonies?”

    “Oh, come on–we just got here, and you’re already complaining?” Hiroko, for one, was having a ball. (Not just because of the food, granted, but that was quite a bonus.) “I guess you can go whenever you want, but you at least have to try some of the food.”

“Ah’m not complain’! Just askin’! Ah’m not so good at these fancy-shamsy shindigs.” If it were up to him, he would stuff his costume full of food and be off into the sunset.

“Ah can’t just leave you ‘ere on your own. Weapon’s ‘llowed o’ not, someone’s gotta watch your back!”

Not that he didn’t mind matching her frills. It was just...well, he looked lame! Half of the party was dressed up like they were from Dragnor! Enemies or not, they looked so much cooler than he did.

Without a moment’s hesitation, the boy tackled his warlord in a hug, talking a mile a minute, “You’re okay, right? I mean, they said you were dead, they must’ve done somethin’, yeah? You look alright- well, mostly alright. Oh, man, you wouldn’t believe the storm brewing at home over everythin’. All of Avia’s in a tailspin over you! And Magoichi! Is he here? I mean, I heard he was arrested for something, but I figured it a bunch slander to try and make everyone think you were dead, and if you aren’t dead, so.”

    “Ya’–Ya’ what?” …He has no idea how to respond to that, but he gets the feeling he should ask Hiroko for details. “I always knew y’were weird. Let a guy have a bad fuckin’ day once in a while! Besides, you were the one mopin’ around like a baby when y’couldn’t fuckin get yourself kicked out of the army ‘cause you were two big’vea pussy to get good.” 

“Ah did, ah did, and what’d’you do, mister bad day? You hounded my ass. You sat down and talked ta me even if I told ya to piss off. You and the resta ya. So if I’m bein’ a pain in the ass, I’m just a product of yer boundless wisdom.”

He gave Taiki a pretty solid punch to the arm, “’Sides, I got good. Can kick yer ass now, I reckon, ‘specially when you’re so doom and gloom. You’d just sit and take it, pissbaby.”

“Ah didn’t, but Momo did. She was ‘bout to marry someone else, I dunno who, you don’t ask too many questions when ya got two girls on yer porch askin’ for a place to lay low. Spent enough time with ‘er that we ended up, ya know, clickin’. It’s just a matt’a circumstance findin’ a good gal, but you ain’t likely to find one complainin’ an’ mopin’. You can’t be mister hot shit one second and ‘woe is me’ another. Pick a shtick., prick.”

    It was no secret Doni wasn’t adjusting well to the life of a soldier after being recruited. Most of the older guys were having trouble getting through to him–even the warlord’s kid had taken a a stab at it without much success. Poor guy - he was probably scared, huh?

    “Y’don’t look so good. I don’t think it’d hurt t’sit down and chew th’ rag a while, right?”

Doni jumped a tad at the voice directed at him (which probably wasn’t the best indicator for his mental state). His Bidoof, at the sudden movement of his trainer, glanced up from his nap at his master’s feet, but considering there wasn’t any screaming or blood, he lowered his head back down. What a good partner.

The warrior laughed nervously, “Ah, ya know, if I didn’t know any better I’d say all’a’y’all were tryin’ t’ butter me up for dinner, but nah, I don’t mind talkin’ awhile if it’ll get me outta trainin’ for a bit. Don’t think Doofus here’s really ready for it either.”

“Bidoof?” The Pokemon protested. What a good trainer.

“Well well, look what the cat dragged in.”

Quite literally too, her Persian’s teeth clamped at the material of Momo’s clothes. Either she was escaping half naked into the woods with the threat of getting mauled by the cat or she would be stuck there. Apparently Momo chose the later. Ichiko always knew she was smart.

Not smart enough to not get caught in the first place, but pretty smart. 

“You forget something in your room, Mo? Or have you come to say hello to your favorite cousin?”

    “Sakura - please, you don’t have to worry about me. I promise, I’ve given this enough thought.”

    “Of course, once the new capital is underway, it will have to include a shrine so I can properly consult Arceus. And someone will have to tend to it, of course. I would love to have you accompany me when I depart - if you’re willing? I can’t think of any other priestess with such devotion to Arceus.”

“WHAAAAAAAAA-”

Oh gosh oh gosh oh gosh was she serious?! Her?! As the shrine keeper to the empress’s castle?! Sakura’s eyes bugged, mouth dropping open in the most unladylike fashion. 

After taking a moment to compose herself, she bowed deeply, squeaking her reply, “It would be an honor and a privilege to serve you and our creator in such a fashion, Azai-sama!”
