“I’m always afraid that the public will scorn songs about happiness out of a disbelief that it is genuine.” — Julien Baker on learning to articulate joy in her music.
Things that are inspiring her right now:
The novel Gilead by Marilyn Robison (a recommendation from the ever-wise Lucy Dacus).
The poetry of Beyza Ozer, a poet recommended by Morgan Martinez, editor of Hooligan Mag (an inspiring person in her own right).
The art of Kazuo Shiraga.
The bands PWR BTTM and Camp Cope; their music, their social commentary, their unapologetic commitment to change through art, honestly just them as people, all of it.
The paintings and zines of Ariel Baldwin, great pal/Memphis-native/Chicago-resident, makes some really provocative and powerful art about healing.

I’d like to walk there again. It was so lonely— a nice kind of loneliness, and all grass and clover and soft sea air.

Faust’s Dream by Luis Ricardo Falero, 1880
“My youngest son, Kevin, who was four at the time, didn’t have his two front teeth. We were filming on the Hoth hangar set for some time, with the full-size Millennium Falcon. My two boys would come on set and play in the cockpit of the Falcon with Peter Mayhew, Harrison Ford, and Mark Hamill in-between takes.
For some reason Kevin just couldn’t say “Harrison.” One day Harrison picked him up and said, “Listen kid if you can’t say Harrison, just call me Peaches,” at which point Mark came over and said, “Well if you’re calling him Peaches, you’d better call me Cream!” From then on, in our house, Luke and Han were known as Peaches and Cream!”
