hey guys what's up

i've been away from this website for so long that i very deeply no longer understand it - e.g., what, for instance, the fuck is "tumblr blazed" - but i hope that you're all doing well. just wanted to drop a few updates on where i've been in recent years:

my debut novel both sides now won the international literacy association award for young adult literature, the cbc and the globe & mail both called it one of the best young adult books of 2021, and it received starred reviews from kirkus and booklist. buy a copy for the trans kid in your life.

i'm currently writing a second young adult novel for penguin

i'm also writing a contemporary adaptation of little women for adults, which you can read more about in the ny times and oprah

you can also listen to jo's boys, my podcast reading little women through a queer and trans lens. next month's guests are actress willa fitzgerald (who played meg opposite maya hawke's jo in the masterpiece adaptation!) and dickinson showrunner alena smith, so: good time to catch up!

i'm still writing about music for pitchfork and occasionally for billboard and uproxx too. caroline polachek is my aoty probably.

i'm getting my master's in creative writing and literature at harvard which rules and my favourite part so far was when flava flav came to read "a clock stopped" to my class on emily dickinson

oh my GOD i've been volunteering at my local humane society and i've helped about 120 cats get adopted since i started at the beginning of this year. highly rec looking up your local shelter and seeing if you can swing by to refill some water bowls, scoop some litter, socialize some skittish cats, etc.

as of 22nd April 2021 we have about 16.3M total cases and a death toll of 187K . Only about 1.4% of the population has been fully vaccinated yet.

on top of that, we've been facing a major shortage in oxygen supply (to the point where the govt has decided to airlift oxygen from other nations), a shortage in hospital beds and services. The numbers keep rising and with the spread of the new strain, the scenario has transformed into something deadlier than ever.

our infrastructures are falling apart and we need all the help possible at this very moment so the nation can be atleast saved when there's still a chance. I've already lost two of my friends, a teacher and family to the second wave and I can only imagine how much worse it can get. so i would like to take this opportunity to link in some donation posts below–

These links look good in terms of how to help out if you don't live in India -- but I'd strongly recommend against donating to Akshay Patra, the organisation linked in the original ask. Their food services are underpinned by upper-caste Hindu ideology. They are paid by the govt to prepare food for Mid Day Meal Schemes in several schools across India, but avoid meat, fish, eggs, as well as food items like garlic and onion, which apparently 'inhibit spiritual advancement'. Not only is this an obvious imposition of religious beliefs on millions of children, it also makes food blander which leads to children eating less and getting less nutrition.

If you are living in India, this Google Drive link contains resources about food, remdisivir, tolicizumab, blood, ambulance, ICU beds, for various cities including Pune, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Delhi, and other states like Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala. quick note for international readers: the book will be available in canada and the united states, in english, on august 24, 2021. it will be available in germany, in translation, sometime in 2022. other countries are in the works!

if you live outside of north america, you may be able to import the book. amazon's probably your best bet, since barnes and noble has suspended international shipping due to covid. and, of course, you can always order the ebook or digital audiobook.

since the april 24th thing is still showing up on some of my feeds, i’m going to briefly break down how to quickly identify imageboard ops & avoid platforming them:

if you see content that more people are criticizing than endorsing – sans actual news stories or articles – you should immediately be suspicious of it

if you don’t see sources, only people talking about the sources secondhand, you should immediately be suspicious of it

4chan, which is arguably the most active imageboard, does have a search feature. if you encounter Suspicious Thing, plugging some key words into its search can tell you pretty quickly if something originated there

since i know many people find the content there disturbing or upsetting and don’t feel super inclined to dig through the website, here are some tips you can use on the bird website. i’ve railed in the past about how twitter’s trend and recommendation algorithms are based on engagement and nothing else, and fake content is liable to get boosted because of it, so here’s my “twitteracy” bible:

search the term and toggle over to “recent tweets”

if people are endorsing The Thing instead of complaining about or criticizing it, who’s doing that? for example, with the superstraight fiasco, the only people endorsing it were idiot terfs and people who couldn’t stop posting frog memes. self explanatory.

if you see an abundance of frog memes, it’s bunk. don’t bother. if you see a lot of the people in the “endorsement” category talking like channers or trolls on their pages consistently, it’s bunk. don’t bother.

click through any anonymous account you see and gauge their authenticity – your anime icons, your piccrew icons, your furry art, your kpop guys, etc. some of these tags move quickly, but if you see a handful of anonymous profiles that were created recently, or are largely inactive, suddenly plugging The Thing, they’re probably sock puppets. sock puppets generally aren’t inclined to waste their time on The Real Deal

this is non-exhaustive, and there are probably more, but if something is ticking several of those boxes, please avoid platforming it. even if you believe doing so is acting in good faith, feeding the trolls never begets anything.

i get younger users didn’t experience the nuisance of having habbo hotel etc raided by channers, and thus don’t have their bullshit detector calibrated for this stuff. completely understandable. but getting into productive habits with this stuff can help prevent the spread of misinformation that only serves to provoke or alarm people. try and do this when you can, please

and it’s a multi-level problem with the 1st being these are predatory debt traps masquerading as legit institutions in a convenient app form. the 2nd being these debt traps are being pushed by media personalities who often uniquely function as a “friend” to their followers so the grift aspect is obscured by that perceived relationship. and i suppose there’s another thin layer of Fucked Frosting in that these traps are often plugged into the same ad spaces as relatively benign shit like socks or cooking subscriptions
