It's a world without superheroes but with supernatural beings. After Uncle Ben's death, Peter tries to avenge him using supernatural powers. Matt is a half-demon who, in his human form, knew Peter and had mutual feelings for him. It's less about being summoned and more about Matt discovering Peter trying to perform a summoning ritual. Worried that Peter might summon something dangerous, he "allows himself to be summoned" to intervene.
On the surface, he accepts Peter's contract, but he subtly tries to dissuade him from relying on supernatural means and instead trys to help him through legal channels.
As a demon, Matt has no eyes, so his human form is also blind. He still possesses heightened senses, relying more on his sense of smell. He can detect emotions through scent and, as a demon, instinctively enjoys the smell of fear—even though he feels it's not entirely right.
