THE LAST CHAPTER!
A loud groan pulled them apart. Across the room, on the chaise, Plagg was shaking his head. ‘I should’ve known this would happen if we came over today. We’re just going to study together, you said. Ha! As if I don’t know what that means.’
Beside him, Tikki rolled her eyes. ‘Plagg, stop. It’s romantic!’
‘Romantic! I’ll show you romantic. You see this?’ Plagg held up a huge hunk of cheese. ‘This is romance! I’ll tell you one thing Atlantis didn’t have – French cheese!’ He popped the chunk in his mouth, mercifully shutting up.
For now.
Smirking, Adrien turned back to Marinette, and they both laughed, their hands overlapping on the desktop.
She shot him a sheepish look. ‘He has a point. We do tend to get a little…distracted when we’re together.’

THE INTERMISSION'S OVER! Acting the Part to begin posting again
Fans of the multi-chapter fic will be relieved to hear that Acting the Part will resume posting again on Tuesday, a change of day to the norm.
But while the author said: "I've really missed reading everyone's comments", they were keen to remind readers that there will be some additional changes to the schedule. "At the minute, I'm only able to manage posting every two weeks."
Given that the writer left us dangling on a cliffhanger for months due to "personal circumstances", let's hope they can manage to keep even that promise!
just wanted to say i think it's so cool you guys consistently run ml big bangs every year. some of the most interesting fics right now are all from this big bang and i'm really amazed at how seamless the organization is. i'm fairly new in this fandom and i'm curious: did everyone have to write a complete fic before participating in this, or just mostly complete one?
Neither of your guesses were right :) Participants typically join with neither a complete fic nor a nearly-completed one.
If you are a writer, you join with an idea! (Artists join and are paired up with writers based on preferences. Betas join to make themselves available for people who want beta readers.)
Then the creation period goes from the summer to Dec 31, and we begin posting our works—alongside the artists who were paired up with writers—the first two weeks of January.
The mods have discussed tweaks for next year. This year, the people who started writing in the summer had pretty close to a 100% success rate at getting the fic ready and publishing this time around, and I like to think some of the tweaks we made to scheduling and "mentoring" helped.
Regarding your sweet compliment, thank you!
Though the current mods don't deserve all the credit. There were those who went before us! @miabrown007 ran it for years, and before her, @clairelutra also ran one.
Because it's a thankless job (usually), I want to take the chance to acknowledge the previous and current mods I know of, looking at who is still on various BB servers:

Please tell me someone out there has come up with a miraculous ladybug Truman show au called the Adrien show
Close. It's called "The Adrien and Marinette Show" and it's by @raspberrycatapult. It's excellent!
The Adrien and Marinette Show by @raspberrycatapult
Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Adrien Agreste are the unsuspecting stars of The Adrien and Marinette Show, a reality television program filmed 24/7 through thousands of hidden cameras and broadcast to a worldwide audience. Unbeknownst to them, the Paris they call home is actually an elaborate set, constructed under a dome and populated with thousands of actors and crew members. Thomas Astruc, the show’s creator and executive producer, seeks to capture their authentic, unscripted emotions as they grow up. But a lie can only be maintained for so long, and as their world begins to unravel around them, Marinette and Adrien realise that all is not what it seems. A Truman Show AU.
I always thought The Truman Show was an interesting concept, but there was a major limit to what the movie could cover, given its limited runtime. The Adrien and Marinette Show, however, does not have that constraint. While The Truman Show only had time to delve into Truman’s perception of his world, and how that perception broke as the lies came to light, this fic has the space to look into how this sort of premise affects the characters around Adrien and Marinette, the actors closest to them, such as their best friends and parents, along with some side characters. I loved reading the interviews with the cast sprinkled throughout the fic, seeing how people who genuinely considered themselves to be close to Adrien and Marinette could justify lying them all the time – and how some of them questioned themselves after seeing the stress the two of them were going through.
And, somehow, all of this feels in-character! Like, even though they’re actors, everyone still feels like they’re truly themselves. It’s not that they’re pretending to be the characters they play on the show. These truly ARE them, it’s just that they have to hide a few things, keep some stuff secret. It’s really impressive. The way it’s written, it feels like the actual Miraculous characters were plucked out of the cartoon and just… had their worldview altered a bit.
But it doesn’t feel like they’re evil or bad, even though they’re perpetuating this massive lie. It just feels like they’ve grown up in a place where this stuff is normalized, so it takes a push to realize how harmful it truly is.
I really want to see the Miracuclass’s, parents’, and teachers’ reaction to Adrien and Marinette finding out the truth, to seeing how upset they were, and how this rocks their world. A lot of them truly believed this gilded birdcage of lies were in Adrien’s and Marinette’s best interest, so to see the two of them reject that, to see how distressed the two of them were by it… that’s got to fracture, maybe even shatter their view of what they’ve been doing, and even of themselves.
Yes, this is partially me begging for a follow-up on, say, how Tom and Sabine react to their adopted daughter’s reaction to finding out the truth, to what she does because of that. I’d love a follow-up with everyone who was interviewed, honestly, or in some way covering their reactions. While Adrien and Marinette may be the stars of the show, they’re not the only people here who have thoughts and feelings, or who can change, as shown with Alya and Nino (I love Alya and Nino).

A Young Witch's Guide to Cats, Curses, and Courtship by @aidanchaser
On the subject of a young witch’s comportment, there are a variety rules that must govern his or her behavior. Most chiefly, a young witch should concern themselves with the rules of familiars, spellwork, and hospitality. Marinette, an amateur witch with dreams of opening her own shop to sell her charms and potions, spends her days assisting her parents with their bakery and her nights working a stand at the magical Midnight Market. Her busy routine is interrupted by a young gentlemen with green eyes, who very shyly accepts her offer of a dance. But when she runs into him the next day, he is nothing but brusque and downright disrespectful. The only thing more fickle than his attitude, it seems, is his cat. The more she tries to figure him out, the more she is dragged into his world of mischief, high society, and curses. If she could just figure out how he really feels about her, then maybe she’d be willing to admit how she really feels about him…
I absolutely ADORE the magic system in this fic, it's so fleshed out and unique and honestly, I feel like it could be used for a full-blown novel. So much is about intention and finding the right flourish or materials that give the emotional vibe you want for a spell to do what you intend it to, it's fascinating.
I love the intricacies of the story as well. Marinette keeps running into Felix and Adrien, but one of them is a cat and one of them is human, and they look identical so that gets confusing quickly. The old-timey vibes add a layer of social intrigue to everything, as Marinette not only has to unravel the mystery behind what's going on with Felix and Adrien and how to fix it but navigate complex hierarchy's and social norms as well.
If you like fantasy AUs, I highly recommend giving this one a try!

Abider by @liiinerle
“Did someone bully you at school?” Kagami clutched Cheng-san’s shoulders. “N-no,” she mumbled. “Did you get a bad result?” “I, I haven’t been registered as a student yet…” “What made today a bad day, then?” said Cheng-san, oozing kindness and attentiveness. “Would you like to tell me?” No. No, she wouldn’t. There was no need to tell anyone something so private only the second time she met them, but also Cheng-san’s embrace was so kind, and yes. “My soulmate,” Kagami said, breathlessly. “I found out I can never have her.” “Ah,” said Cheng-san. “I should have guessed when I saw the two of you… you met her at fencing, didn’t you?” Kagami’s blood froze. She pushed herself free from the hug, stared into Sabine’s eyes. “How do you know that?” There was something about Cheng-san’s expression that felt different from before the hug started. An undertone that made it look like she suddenly hadn’t slept enough. “She is my daughter,” she said. --- Kagami has always dreamt about having a soulmate. And she gets one on her ninth birthday, a girl named Marinette - but Kagami's efforts to try and meet, let alone court, her soulmate, are repeatedly frustrated.
So this is an interesting take on soulmates. At the age of 9, everyone's able to summon a spirit who's said to be your soulmate. This spirit can physically interact with the world and can be channeled to help boost you, mentally and physically. Tsurugitech has a gadget that can scan a spirit and tell you who it is and where they live, which is very helpful for finding the person.
Problem is, the narrative of "your soulmate is your one true romantic partner for life" really doesn't hold up, especially when you can have one person as your soulmate, but they don't have you as their soulmate. Or someone has more than one soulmate. Even MANY more than one. Or a myriad of other circumstances that come up over the course of the story.
The story itself is less about the soulmate aspect per se though, and more about Marinette being almost commodified, considered a public good to an extent, and trying to stretch herself out across many people out of obligation, along with others sometimes trying to decide what's best for her without her input. It's reminiscent of what Adrien goes through in canon in fact, with how he's a teen celebrity, and how he's treated because of it.

L'effet Papillon by TheInkredibleKaptainKaiju
After all this time, Hawkmoth had finally made his wish. Everything should have been perfect…so why wasn't it? What went wrong that meant Gabriel was still alive, when everyone else wasn't? As it turned out, Gabriel Agreste broke the universe. And now he has to fix it.
So you've got some classic multiverse tropes here, with Gabriel and Bunnyx forming an unlikely duo hopping around the multiverse, trying to peace together what the force is that's been wrecking all the various universes, all while trying to avoid a well-meaning but antagonistic organization of multiversal Bunnyxes and picking up a ragtag team of other multiversal recruits (yes, this is CLEARLY inspired by the Spiderverse movies).
My favorite aspect of this fic is the redemption arc it crafts for Gabriel. This is supposed to be canon Gabriel right after he made the Wish and died, which means that he has all the baggage that the show Gabriel did. The way that the show slowly has him grow from his mistakes as he interacts with other Marinettes and Adriens and Gabriels, how he sees the different routes that he could've gone down, and how he acts when confronted with choices that, in the past, would have led him to going down darker roads... it's really well done. If you want a great adventure story, a good Alix story, or a fantastic Gabriel redemption story, then I highly recommend checking this fic out!

Tales From The Paris Patrol by The_Rabbit42
"Starting this weekend, I'm organizing everyone to patrol in pairs," Ladybug says. "I'll mix it up every time, so you probably won't see the same person again for a while. This should help you all get to know each other. But not too much!" 18 heroes. 17 evenings. 153 pairs on patrol.
So this is just a series of short vignettes with every possible combination of Miraculers. If you like the team then this is a real treat, with how you get to see them all bounce off of each other in a variety of ways.

Dear Ladybug, Love Adrien by Jigglypuff1994
Marinette decides it’s time to switch it up when she realizes that Adrien Agreste will never see her as more than a friend. She writes an anonymous letter, hoping someone new will come along and sweep her off her feet. While exploring his favorite bookshop, Adrien discovers Ladybug’s hidden letter and finds himself intrigued with the girl behind it. Swiftly becoming pen pals, Ladybug and Adrien fill their letters with romantic poems, cheesy puns, and their innermost dreams and fears, both quickly falling for their anonymous pals. But as the question of who is on the other side grows, the pair are put to the test. Through some faith, silly shenanigans, and a little help from their friends, can their in-person selves find the same spark as their written identities, or has their romance been doomed from the start?
This is a cute little story. If you want a fun little No Powers Romcom Bookshop AU, this is the fic for you!

Chloenette Island Fics series by ZettaWhyNot
First fic: Stranded Together
Chloé sees Ladybug and Rena Rouge detransform after an Akuma attack. Realizing that this could be her chance to wield Miraculous powers again, Chloé goes after the Miracle Box. Marinette doesn't let her have it without a fight, however. Their struggle over the box unleashes magic that ends up sending them to a deserted island. Now they're stuck relying on each other to survive until help comes.
This is just really cute, I love the two of them slowly becoming closer as they have to depend on each other more. If you want some adorable semi-slowburn Chloenette, pick this fic up!
---
Gunsmoke And Mirrors by @aidanchaser
In the wake of World War I, Marinette and her crew have transitioned from spy work and raiding black markets to running an evening club and fighting organized crime on the side. She's determined to use her team to take down Gabriel Agreste, who's been getting away with criminal activity since the war began, merely because of his connections to the Mayor. Marinette's quest for justice has absolutely nothing to do with a summer romance she had with Adrien Agreste before the war, before he was shipped off to England and never heard from again. Her quest for justice has nothing to do with Adrien's sudden return, his new involvement in his father's business, and absolutely nothing to do with her own personal heartbreak.
This is a fun, old-timey AU, with a small sprinkling of enemies au due to Marinette making some incorrect assumptions. If you like more historical Miraculous AUs, this one's worth a look!

I feel safe with you (so I'm terrified) by @bringthestorm
Look, Nino knows that Paris' notorious supervillains, Ladybug and Chat Noir, are evil. As Alya's one true best friend, who has gotten her out of more than a few scrapes, he has witnessed firsthand the destruction that both of them can cause. Unfortunately, his brain didn't get the memo. When Nino accidentally lends Chat Noir a hand, the supervillain returns to offer his gratitude— and a chance at an unlikely friendship. After Ladybug mysteriously vanishes, the pair work together to find her whereabouts, dragging Nino headfirst into a world of manipulation and magic. Trying to balance investigating, releasing his EP, crushing on his adorable friend, Adrien, and trying to get Marinette to return his calls, Nino is unprepared for the secrets he will recover and the feelings he's desperately trying to deny.
So this is a prequel to an earlier fic that I loved called "is it chill that you're in my head?" I ADORED that fic, and I love this one too! Getting to see the perspective of Nino before he joins Ladybug and Chat Noir, before he realizes who the hero and the villain are, seeing how he thinks about them and how cautious he is - but then also how he slowly opens up and sees the truth (but not without a setback or two.) And the Ninoir is exquisite!

With Love, For Minibug by frostedpuffs
Marinette never thought she’d face pregnancy on her own. She’s shocked and unprepared, but there’s no doubt in her heart—she’s always wanted to be a mother. The first person she confides in is Chat Noir, her best friend of ten years. As the months pass, his support is unwavering. He's as devoted as ever and eager to meet the baby they’ve lovingly nicknamed Minibug. And when the baby arrives, he’s still the best partner Ladybug could ever ask for. Somewhere between juggling single motherhood, protecting Paris, and late-night patrols, Marinette is struck by a realization: She’s fallen for him. Again. What she doesn’t realize is that he’s always been hers—still holding onto hope that one day, Ladybug will love him back. But, more than anything, Chat Noir wants to be a father. And to Minibug, he already is.
This is such a wholesome, cute, warm fic to read. Seeing how Marinette struggles through her pregnancy and the first year of her daughter's life, and how her friends and family, very much including Chat, help... it's just nice. And seeing Chat acting as a father, to the point that even minibug thinks of him as one... it's just really good.

New Beginnings by DreamsAndDaytime
When Félix has to live with his uncle in Paris due to unseen circumstances, their relationship doesn't get off to a good start. He wants nothing to do with Gabriel and tries to stay as far away from him as possible. But when he suddenly encounters a fatherly love he has never known before, a game begins that brings him both closer to Gabriel and further away from his true identity.
So this is an interesting take with Gabriel. He's not a good father... but he's a far better one than Colt. Which leaves Felix ping-ponging between begging for his approval, and wanting nothing to do with him. Gabriel himself seems to have a hard time navigating that, switching between being overly harsh, to being gentle and caring.
I like seeing how the two of them interact, and how they change over time. Neither of them are too sure about this relationship, or know how to do it well. And Gabriel especially isn't exactly father of the year. But they both ultimately care for each other, and Gabriel, albeit gradually and with many steps back along the way, changes for the better.

My Love, My Lifeline by @buggachat
Adrien has mastered the art of the smile. Even while his mind is on poor behavior, when he's caught beneath a barrage of unkind thoughts to himself, he's still able to keep his smile. Attend his friends' parties, maintain small talk, get through the day — and hopefully his friends won't realize how messed up he really is. Everyone is out-pacing him. While he's barely getting out of bed in the morning, his friends are making waves, changing lives, getting engaged. He can't even get his girlfriend to text him back. So, sure. Maybe he's not in the best head space right now — but 'suicidal'? Ladybug's certainly just reading too deeply into things. But if her concern for Chat Noir's mental state is enough to get her reaching out, well, he won't turn down the opportunity to chat with a friend. Besides, Ladybug seems to be having a rough go of it, too. Maybe they can help each other out. (a Ladynoir hurt/comfort texting fic, with established Adrienette)
It's some good old Adrien angst, with Ladybug realizing that Chat's severely depressed and even suicidal, and doing what she can to help him, even though he thinks he isn't worth the help. I particularly loved the irony whenever Ladybug and Chat Noir discussed their relationships with their romantic partners, never realizing that they're dissecting their own relationship. I also like that while Adrien's issues are the main focus, Marinette is also shown to have some severe anxiety and self-worth issues that Adrien does his best to help with.

A Normal Human In Normal Human Coverings by @inthretis
Marinette’s smile was too wide to be human.
So Marinette's an Eldritch entity who's trying to be human, and generally not passing very well since she has poor control of her own form, can see the colors of people's livers, and eats a lot of random things and creatures. Which makes a lot of people pretty scared of her. She is still a nice person at her core, just very unsettling.
The fic's rated M because of the graphic way her attempts to look human tend to fail. Most of that sort of thing is present in the first chapter, so if that doesn't freak you out, then you're good to go for the rest of the fic.
I love reading about how everyone reacts to Marinette's weirdness, what they all think of her, and how that changes over time. Not that Marinette is the only one who's been altered, oh no. Lila actually has one of the most interesting character arcs I've seen from her, with her lying about being Ladybug's best friend in order to gain fame and influence... and then having to deal with that becoming true when Ladybug takes that to heart, makes Lila her confidant, and forcibly befriends her. Lila's not a totally different person here, she's not exactly "good" in the traditional sense, but she gradually becomes better by actually having to interact with people on a deeper level than she's used to. It's quite refreshing.
If you're looking for a linear, plot-driven narrative, you won't find it here. It's more of a slice-of-life narrative with a plot simmering in the background - a time travel plot, actually, so linearity is out the window.
If any of that piques your interest, then I recommend taking a look at A Normal Human In Normal Human Coverings. There's no other fic in the fandom quite like it.

Feather Pendant by @thetardisisnotourdivision
Upon realising, to her irritation, that she can't help comparing Sentibug to Adrien, Mayura lets her go free and offers her a home. But Bridgette Sancoeur is much more than just an abandoned sentimonster. In fact, from the moment she is freed, nothing will ever quite be the same again.
If you like Sentibug and you like Nathalie being a mom, you're in the right place! I like how Nathalie gradually becomes more and more attached to her new daughter, and how Adrien takes to Bridgette as basically being a sister.
(Y'all know I love a hastily thrown-together fake book cover.)
I present my four-chapter work, It Comes Without Warning, a story about Luka on the night he was akumatized as Truth. Not only did Hawkmoth prey on his emotions, but he got dumped, and he found out who his biological father was.
But so did the rest of the world.
Now he has to figure out how to pick up the pieces of his life and move forward.
This is a character study of Luka, who (in my opinion) is given short shrift, even by many Luka fans. He's not the perfect boyfriend, emotive and supportive in all the right ways. No one is perfect! In this work, I hope to show everyone his mental struggles, which are all of our mental struggles.
Thank you to @mlbigbang peeps for your support, thank you to @uptoolateart and @raspberrycatapult for beta reading this, and everyone look forward to artwork by @kittysuicoffee and @sunshinecloud-03 that will accompany this fic!
Link Herę: https://archiveofourown.org/works/77702536/chapters/203530026
Edit!!
You know, generally speaking, it's a good idea to actually include info about the story in your announcement!
Once upon a time, Truth and Lie bathed together in a pond. Lie stole Truth’s clothes and ran off. Refusing to wear Lie’s filthy rags, Truth walked back to town, exposed. Upon seeing the naked Truth, the people there screamed and turned away toward the well-dressed Lie. Perceiving herself ugly, Truth felt ashamed and hid in a well.

It's my solo fic for @mlbigbang 2025! I'm publishing it tomorrow, but here's a little preview to whet your whistle!
I have been gripped by the idea that Luka is way more complex internally than we give him credit for. He's not just the guy equivalent of the MPDG. He's got layers. Like an onion. This is my attempt to make canon fit with him being a traumatized kid.
(When S6 came out, boy howdy did I feel vindicated!)
My love letter to Luka stans, Juleka stans, Anarka stans (all three of us!) as I try to make these cartoon characters more realistic.

I've finally taken a few minutes to announce my latest fic, a non-linear character study of Gabriel's final moments and the events that led to him becoming the monster he died as. I wrote it for the @miracu10us zine, and am grateful to have received help from @uptoolateart, @raspberrycatapult, @mysticraven20, and @giuliafc. You can read it on Ao3 at this link:

"Once again as in olden days, happy golden days of yore.
Faithful friends who are dear to us, gather near to us once more"
The last person Marinette Dupain-Cheng ever expected to see was her ex, Adrien Agreste. When he shows up at the Christmas Eve party, she's left reeling, grieving over a future that can never be. A young girl's fantasy long-gone.
But when a certain Chat drops by, wondering why she's upset, she has to face her past, albeit reluctantly.
Top Ten Best Completed Miraculous Fics, For The Miracu10us Tenth Anniversary Zine
I've been considering making a Top Ten list overall for a while, but was having trouble deciding when to make it. Because, of course, there could always be a fic that comes out in the future that would replace one of the entries in this list. But then KPG approached me about doing something for the Miracu10us zine (available for download here), and it seemed like the perfect time to make my list! Which was tougher than I expected. I have read a LOT of Miraculous fics, and narrowing down to the truly best of the best was difficult, especially since it had been years since I'd read a lot of these. Still, I'm pretty satisfied with my top six especially, and these are all fics that I think an avid Miraculous reader should check out.
10. What The Cat Dragged In by Kryal
Tony's pretty sure it's written into cosmic law somewhere: superheroes are not supposed to be cute. Apparently, no one's told these two. He’s okay with that.
This one’s a fandom classic. It’s one of the most popular Miraculous fics of all time, and for good reason. The crossover characters from the Avengers feel on-point and likable, all the Miraculous characters who show up are excellent and able to show their strengths, and Tony’s frustration that, even with as much money and power as SHIELD have, they ultimately can’t do anything to help support a couple of kids… it’s palpable. The fic only takes place over a couple of days and only has a few major events, but the prose gives a lot of time to develop everything that does happen. It’s a must-read for any newcomer to the Miraculous fandom, and an excellent crossover.
8. In case you don’t know me tomorrow by @thelibraryloser
“We live in a crazy world where pieces of our lives can be erased like they never even happened. I just wanted to memorize this moment so… so I could keep it, if that makes sense.” Adrien's heart gave a little flutter. She wanted to keep this moment, meeting him. She wanted to keep… him. “I understand exactly what you mean." In a world that has created a way to selectively delete memories, no moment is truly safe. So how do you hold on to something when the memory of it is gone? And how do you keep fighting for someone when you're the only one who remembers?
I love sci-fi. I adore exploring new technology we might get, how we might use it, and how that use says something about ourselves. And this? This is an excellent sci-fi novel. Honestly, with the way it’s set up and paced, I feel like it would make for a great movie adaptation, even.
It’s a No-Miraculous AU, there aren’t any superheroes or fantasy elements. There is, however, tech that can allow you to delete memories of certain people or events, similarly to The Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind. I love how different uses and abuses of the tech’s shown, with Chloe being a frequent repeat visitor to the amnesia clinic, for instance. But it’s possible to use it on someone far less willing, if a certain controlling father is willing to cross the lines. Especially when he doesn’t like the woman his son is dating. And he has levers he can pull to try and keep away any suitors he doesn’t like.
But Adrien isn’t very cooperative, and is far too curious for his father’s liking.
It may be a No Miraculous AU, but the characters are still very recognizable as themselves, and the plots intriguing and suspenseful. If, like me, you tend to devour sci-fi anthology shows, then I think you’ll have a good time here.
Also I’m not kidding about wishing this was a movie. I know it’s likely impossible, but I REALLY think this fic would make for a great movie.
7. The Bravery Of Adrien Agreste by Druwho
Sixteen-year-old Marinette is wilting under her guardian's responsibilities. Feeling betrayed, alone, and utterly alienated from her friends, she breaks down in front of Chat Noir. After Adrien realizes his compromise with Lila hasn’t stopped Marinette’s suffering, he vows to be there for his friend. But soon, Adrien realizes he’s not so brave outside the mask. Now, he’s determined to take control of his life, even if it means running away. ...and sometimes, the bravest thing one can do is admit you need help.
This was one of the fics that I had the worst first impression of. I read the first chapter when it first released, and promptly backspaced out of the fic in disgust. Marinette starts off the fic by venting about how upset and angry she is at Adrien for him letting Lila touch him all the time even though he’s clearly uncomfortable with it, even calling him a coward over it and throwing the bracelet he gave her in frustration, breaking it in the process. Combined with the fic being named “The Cowardice of Adrien Agreste” at the time, I assumed that Marinette’s victim-blaming was supposed to be correct and right, that the narrative would back up her perspective, as it was one that I’d seen echoed around certain segments of the fandom at that time.
Luckily, one of my friends had been reading it, and was able to point me to some replies by the author that clarified their true intentions. Both Marinette and Adrien had a lot of growing they needed to do throughout the fic, and in Marinette’s case, a lot of that growth was focused on her finding out that she didn’t always know or understand everything that was going on in someone else’s life. And when she found out the things she didn’t know, when she understood them, she did everything she could to help, to make things right. That’s something I love about her character.
As for Adrien, he had to get worse before getting better, internalizing Marinette’s criticisms, since they matched with some of the self-loathing he already had going on. Lila going back on her promise to leave Marinette alone just made things worse, and Gabriel ignoring Adrien’s pleas to not have to model again were the final straw. But of course, his friends won’t let him stay lost forever, no matter how hard he tries. Especially one friend in particular.
I’m very glad that I gave The Bravery Of Adrien Agreste a second shot. It’s got some great character development, and I love how both Adrien and Marinette inadvertently hurt each other, even though they care about each other so much, and end up growing and healing together.
6. drowning (in plain sight) by @buggachat
Everybody had expected Monarch's defeat to be a moment of triumph. Nobody had expected Gabriel Agreste, unmasked and mind frayed from continual abuse of the miraculous, crying out to all who would listen and making Paris certain of one thing: His son, Adrien Agreste, is one of his sentimonsters. And now he's missing. Nobody can find him— not even the superheroes, and not even his closest friends. But Marinette, Nino, and Alya aren't ones to give up so easily. They'll find him, no matter what it takes. (But, geez, would it kill Chat Noir to lend a hand?)
This is a very emotional fic. Paris is torn over whether to feel bad for Adrien, how dangerous he is, and even whether to consider him to be a person. Few people feel as negatively towards Adrien as Adrien himself does, however. And while Chat Noir’s still around, he’s so hostile towards Adrien, towards Marinette’s and Nino’s and Alya’s friend, that they sometimes wish he wasn’t.
Just… Marinette and Nino are breaking down over not knowing what happened to Adrien, Adrien being on the run, not eating much, all while Plagg’s begging him to get better food and shelter, to take care of himself… if you like angst and hurt/comfort and someone’s friends reaching out, again and again, to try and help them, to get them to see the value in themselves… this is the fic for you. If you’re prone to crying, prepare for some waterworks. The satisfying kind, though, the one where things are hard and bad but get better, little by little.
5. Hold Me By Both Hands by @angelofthequeers
“I know he said never to take you back,” Plagg mutters. “But he’d change his tune if he knew.” He looks Adrien straight in the eye and, more serious than Adrien’s ever seen him before, says, “There’s someone you gotta meet. He’s been looking for that book for ages.” How differently might the events of season 2 have gone if Adrien had also known of Master Fu from the start?
This fic was so good, I literally wrote essays analyzing some of its different aspects. It’s the best “Miraculous rewrite” fic I’ve seen, with it basically rewriting seasons 2 and 3. Ladybug and Chat Noir talk about their different issues more, the things they need to work on, and just… grow quite a bit.
It’s not just their relationship either. There are multiple interweaving plot threads, with a throughline about Adrien learning what sexual harassment is and what boundaries are, for instance. Since sexual harassment has sadly been normalized towards him and he’s never really been allowed to have boundaries, which also feeds into his behavior towards Ladybug as Chat Noir. He’d never want to hurt her, but he can do so accidentally because of not understanding that the ways he’s been raised was wrong. And then he needs to learn how to enforce his own boundaries, and just… it’s really good.
There’s also plotlines about some of the more minor characters, like Alya, with her getting the Fox Miraculous and soon after, having to be part of a very personal akuma fight, and trying not to let her emotions get the better of her. I love how she’s treated as a full, well-rounded character in this with her own thoughts and feelings and issues, I don’t see that often enough.
The character who I think got the best character development in this fic, though, is Chloe. Hold Me By Both Hands has the BEST Chloedemption I have ever seen, hands down, and it’s not even close. If you’ve watched The Good Place, the character arc she goes through, the lessons she has to learn, will be very familiar.
Like in The Good Place, Chloe has a strong external incentive to wanting to become a better person – Adrien won’t be friends with her until she stops being so mean to people, like how Eleanor needs to become a person who’s worthy of being in The Good Place so she won’t be sent down to The Bad Place and be tortured. And like with that show, Chloe has a mentor in this - she goes to Marinette for help on learning to be a better person, since she considers her to be a goody-two shoes. But it’s not an easy task. Chloe can’t just change her whole personality overnight, and doing it for only an external reason… that isn’t going to last. She has to figure out her own, internal reasons to want to be better, to be nicer, without actually going against who she is.
I just… I love that Chloe doesn’t do one, redemptive thing that makes her a “good person”. There’s no shortcuts, no easy way out, no lightswitch that flips to make her change. She has to really put in the work, and since she DID put in that work, the change feels more natural and more likely to last. This is the Chloedemption I wish other Chloedemption’s were modeled on. While I like Chloe’s where she just became a better person off-screen, or where some traumatic experience caused her to change how she interacts with people, this… this feels more realistic, and more applicable to people’s everyday lives. Just the Chloedemption alone, even as one plot thread amongst many, would likely get Hold Me By Both Hands on this list, but along with everything else the fic covers? It’s a must-read.
4. Someone To Watch Over Me by @dfcfanfics
Adrien is used to his father taking him for granted and treating him poorly, especially since his mother's disappearance... but it's never been anywhere _near_ this bad before. Between that and trouble at school, his life is in quite the downward spiral. He's been putting on a brave face, but he's struggling... and his friends are starting to notice. One special friend in particular. Marinette is determined to help him, any way that she can -- with _and_ without her mask. But when Akumas fly towards Adrien, he soon finds himself more deeply entwined in Marinette's life AND Ladybug's private life than he'd ever imagined. Can Adrien possibly decide between the two angels who are making his life worth living again? Can Marinette process Adrien's crush on Ladybug AND his growing feelings for her? And can Gabriel stop laughing long enough to launch his master plan? A fluffy DFC - buggachat Ladrienette jam.
This might be the fic I’m most personally biased towards. I don’t think it’s for everyone. All the characters talk at length about their feelings, trying to work out exactly how to navigate the fraught emotional situations they’re in without hurting anyone else’s feelings or making anything worse. If you get bored by long-winded conversations working through feelings and consequences of different actions, you’re not going to like this fic.
But personally? I loved it. I first read it as it was being released, and it helped me through a tough time in my life. I was having a lot of medical issues that were getting progressively worse, I didn’t have a diagnosis, and I legitimately thought I might die. On top of that, my parents were getting divorced (2019 was a REALLY sucky year for me).
But reading “Someone To Watch Over Me” helped. Reading about Adrien and Marinette trying to navigate a two-person poly without hurting each other, getting closer and closer together, all while being so, so careful not to hurt each other… it was really nice, especially when I needed to kill time before doctor’s appointments.
Not that it was only good because of the context in which I was reading it. I reread it in order to make a recommendation for this list, and it still holds up really well. I especially love the final act – while the fic is mostly about Adrien’s and Marinette’s (and Ladybug’s, I suppose) relationship with each other, Gabriel’s still scheming in the background, and Tikki and Plagg do a bit of exploring while Adrien and Marinette are busy with each other. I won’t spoil what happens, exactly, but the resolution to the Hawk Moth plot is one of my favorites I’ve seen.
3. Whose woods these are (I think I know) by Reiaji
Four years after his future turns to cinders, Adrien is a servant in the house he was meant to inherit. Disowned by his father and abused by his stepmother, his days are filled with drudgery until he meets a masked huntress in the forest behind his father's chateau. As his friendship with Ladybug turns to first love, he dreams of a future spent at her side. Then, on the eve of the Princess's masquerade, he meets his guardian—and is granted a wish. [Ladrien Cinderella AU]
This is both the quintessential Fairy Tales AU for Miraculous, and the quintessential Ladrien fic. In both cases, this is at the top of the must-read list. It’s not just a straight-up insertion of Miraculous characters into Cinderella. That would be boring. No, this is inspired by Cinderella. His father’s not dead, just distant. His stepsister isn’t all that awful to him, she’s just a bit vain and afraid of losing him. She’s one of the few somewhat-allies he has, in fact.
Adrien’s under a lot of stress, but he perseveres nonetheless, and even manages to help a girl who’s doing even worse than he is. Only to discover how high status she is, and for her to help him in turn, falling for his kind and gentle nature, and he, for hers, and to continue visiting each other, even though they have to keep it a secret, for fear that Audrey would tear them apart, punishing Adrien in the process.
This Cinderella fic isn’t just about forbidden love or abusive stepparents though. This is, after all, more than just a Cinderella fic – it’s a Miraculous fic as well. Cinderella doesn’t normally feature people being turned into supervillains and superheroes showing up to defeat them. Because yes, Miraculous – the magic jewels that house kwami power and allow their Holders to gain superpowers – are still a thing here. The kwamis are slightly more fae-like than normal, but still clearly themselves, and Plagg makes for quite the fairy godmother.
I love the way Miraculous lore and concepts are integrated into this fairy tale world, I love the way Miraculous characters are integrated, I just… it’s really well-written and really good.
2. Withered Wings by @11JJ11
Nino wasn’t sure if anyone had ever willingly took the akuma butterfly before him, but with his mind completely open to this apparent son of Hawk Moth he knew that he couldn’t turn him away. Not someone that was so afraid, not someone who would be left at the mercy of Hawk Moth.
I love Enemies AU, especially ones where Adrien’s helping the villains reluctantly, because he doesn’t have much choice in the matter. I love fics that give attention to Alya and Nino. And this fic? This scratches an itch I’d had for a while. The way Adrien used the Butterfly, and later the Peacock, differently from how Gabriel and Nathalie did, more gently, even when it might get him in trouble. The way Nino recognized that and did his best to help Adrien out, even when it led to him opposing the heroes at times. The way Alya and Marinette stepped up, bonded, became a duo, fighting against Nino’s and Adrien’s superpowered forms, even while questioning whether they were truly the villains they’d appeared to be at first glance… it’s so, so good.
Seriously, if you want a good Nino fic, a good Adrino fic, an enemies AU, or just a fic where the characters have to juggle multiple different concerns and are often stuck between a rock and a hard place, this is a fic you should check out.
1. one does not love breathing by @wackus-bonkus-maximus
All of Paris watched as Hawkmoth murdered Chat Noir, taking the Black Cat Miraculous for himself. Ladybug swears revenge, but her enemy—and every Miraculous in his possession—disappear without a trace. Six years later, a new team of villains launches an attack: Volpina, armed with new powers; Queen Bee, with questionable loyalty; Argos, the new holder of the Peacock Miraculous; and Cat Walker, who Ladybug hates the most. Takes place after S4 - Strike Back.
This is the best Miraculous fic I’ve ever read, and it’s not even close. I was on the edge of my seat for every update, to the point that I had to make my own fanfic for it, just to make things better for the characters. Readers nowadays are lucky. They have the option of binging the whole thing at once, rather than needing to wait between updates.
One does not love breathing is an enemies au fic, sort of – Chat Noir and Ladybug were originally a team, but when he comes back as Cat Walker… well, he appears to be working for the villains. And this version of Ladybug is far more brutal after witnessing her partner’s untimely demise.
I just… I’m not even sure how to describe this fic. You have so many people, so many moving parts as different characters try to unravel the truth of what’s going on, as those who are in the know fight against their constraints, and attempt to bring things to the happiest conclusion they can in impossible circumstances. This is an “Earn Your Happy Ending” sort of fic, and man, does everyone have to put in the work for a positive outcome. It’s just… it’s so, so good, with everyone having their own viewpoints, their own reasons for doing things, and villains with complex motivations and mysterious goals, ones you gradually uncover as the story moves forwards. There are a lot of plot twists, which makes it difficult to talk about without major spoilers.
It’s a very emotionally intense story, but if you can handle it, you’ll find a plotline that rivals those of even the best published stories. I can’t recommend it enough.
She never knew all that she would become.
The miracu10us zine is here!
First off, hats off to @scribblekingdom for this incredible art, which graces our cover. Sharing the image doesn't tell the story of the level of effort this image represents. Every time news of a new Ladybug variant came out, back to the drawing board. It humbled and excited us in equal measure.
As you open the magazine (it's really more of a mook at this point), you will see what appears to be two strange yellow pages with small white markings. Zoom in! The zine begins and ends with two end pages that, together, contain the Ao3 names of every author who has posted a pubicly-available ML fic on the site. It's our version of the Lord of the Rings end credits, which listed every member of the LotR fan club.
How do you get this dern thing? The simplest link to visit is our Carrd.
We currently have two options for viewing:
A web version for download. This is a 200MB PDF meant for viewing on a device. The quality astounds me.
A flipbook for viewing online without downloading.
We will have a third option soon, possibly within twenty-four hours: a CMYK version meant to be taken to a print shop or used with your own printer. The link will show up on the Carrd, but we'll also announce it here.
We are thinking seriously about investigating a print-on-demand option. No money would come to our hands. We would just be setting it up so anyone who wants a print version but doesn't know where to look could just use that service. The zine was designed using Canva, which offers such a service. It might be easy to connect the project to their POD service and they print and ship it right to you.
We thank everyone who contributed, and everyone who now reads the zine or reblogs this announcement. Drop us a line; tell us what you think!

Ahhhh it's out!! What a joy it's been to work on this thing!
one of the best things that ml season 6 has been doing is letting marinette's freak flag fly to her heart's content. she's somersaulting accross bathroom floors, she's scuttling up walls, she's grabbing whole slices of cake with her hands and eating them. you go girl. they couldn't stop you if they tried
your face is on the posters; your smile is on the telly; is your life your own?
reality is a well-curated lie that is kept by all the people you've ever known
The way I GASPED when I saw this!!!
By sheer coincidence, I'm in the process of finishing the final chapter of a Truman Show AU fic that I've been writing for 3 years! And honestly, this is just what I needed to see right now. A reminder of why I'm writing this, and how much I love the premise at its core 🥺
I love the art so much! It's gorgeous!!! ❤️
A Penchant for Pancakes - Chapter 9
Yes, I'm still writing this nonsense. Chapter summary - Gabriel essentially lives out Act 3, Scene 4 of Macbeth.
Preview:
Donning his trusty spatula, Gabriel flipped and tossed and fried the best pancakes he’d ever made – and that was really saying something. Then he called Nathalie and Adrien into the dining room to join him for a meal. A banquet, even. The feast of the century!
Pancake plebians that they were, they stared at their plates with deep mistrust – which was probably warranted, given that he’d once literally killed someone with his cooking.
Not that Adrien knew that.
Or the police.
Or anyone else in Paris.
No one would find out his secret…s.
