song: ll.shadows by childish gambino
you and rio hung out a lot before even really getting to know eachother. you were both invited to hangouts with mutual friends but you never really… talked. you knew of eachother and were cool and there was no awkwardness between you, yet a different kind of tension.
the moment you really felt this tension was at a dinner for Miriam, your best friend, it was her birthday. the get together was hosted at her house. it was warm and the air smelled of freshly cooked food. candles were lit, casting a warm glow on the girl in front of you. rio. nobody was wearing anything too fancy, but it was still enough to show they cared. she wore a striped polo with baggy jeans and converse. her ring clad hands twirled the ends of her cornrows, fiddling with the small curl.
you couldn’t seem to take your eyes off her, even if you tried, they would just gravitate to her relaxed and oblivious self. but you didn’t know, whenever you looked away, she would glance at you, scanning your soft features and eyes trailing down the length of your hair. her timing was perfect, looking away a second before you caught her.
later that night, the two of you stood in the kitchen, helping clean up. you stood in front of the sink, washing dishes then handing them to her to dry. the air between to two of you was still. nothing was really there to say yet you felt the need to fill the silence.
“you looked nice tonight.” you spoke in a low tone, yet still loud enough for her to hear. she froze for a second, but immediately tried to cover it up by a cough.
“uh, thank you. you looked nice too.” she said, quite awkwardly. you began to wonder if you should’ve said anything. but it was just a simple compliment right?
a blanket of silence took over again and you felt like embarrassment was eating you alive. once you had finished the dishes, you flashed a smile at her and went to gather your things, picking up your phone to order an uber. she stood in the doorway, lips pressed together and arms crossed, seemingly feeling tension as well.
in her mind she was freaking out as well. she could’ve kept the conversation going, or she could’ve complimented you better. your silence was killing her. but maybe you weren’t bothered?
then, an idea popped in her head.
“do you want me to give you a ride? save some money?” she offered, holding her head up a little higher now.
you looked up from the glowing screen that you held tightly in your hand, eyes searching her expression for some kind of sign that she was joking or didn’t mean what she was saying. but she seemed genuine. you smiled softly, turning off your phone and sliding it into your pocket.
“yeah that would be nice.”
rio made made more of an effort to talk to you in the car. asking simple questions of how you liked the food and what youll do for the rest of the weekend. it was a calm energy in the car, much better than the tension left at Miriam’s house.
by the end of the car ride, she opened your door for you and walked to the front door with you. you had exchanged numbers to continue an in depth conversation you were having about an artist. you fell asleep that night with your mind clouded with her voice and the sight of her. something so pure, and something was in the air. a feeling, that more would come from this.
and that’s how you got here. it’s been 3 weeks since you and rio had gotten together. you decided to take things slow and not rush into anything and to feel no pressure. it was peaceful.
today you were out on a date at a carnival. rides and neon lights spilled over signs that created pictures to exaggerate rollercoasters. the smell of popcorn and hot dogs filled the air along with a sweet scent of funnel cake. the air was sticky and thick due to the mid summer weather, but getting your hair blasted back on a rollercoaster made up for it, creating a good breeze to cool you off.
you and rio had scavenged and talked for hours here, currently talking about how some guy next to you passed out on a big drop. (lowkey self inserting here) but your walking and laughter came to a halt when your hand collided with her chest to stop her and pointed at the small photo booth sign hidden in a corner. there was no line, and seemed to be no one inside. you grabbed your girlfriends hand and slid through the sea of people to get to the secluded space.
you pushed the curtain covering the door and the two of you stuffed yourselves inside. the fluorescent lighting hurt your eyes as you tapped on the screen, selecting a banner that you and rio could agree on.
small numbers on the screen counted down and you and rio rushed to think of a pose. after deciding on something simple, the camera flashed, giving you no time until the next countdown.
“holy fuck this is stressful” she exclaimed, a soft laugh erupting from your chest.
“wait” an idea crossed your mind, “can I kiss your cheek?” you asked, the camera flashing and catching the two of you mid conversation.
she nodded, seemingly getting a little nervous, as if maybe she had something in mind too but it was finally happening.
you leaned in and pressed your lips softly to her cheek, lipliner smudging in the process. the camera flashed and warned you that the next photo would be the last.
she turned her head to look at you, eyes sparkling with love. she smiled nervously and you laughed. the countdown neared closer to one, and with pure nerves and adrenaline, you smashed your lips into eachothers at quite literally the exact same time. you held that pose for a minute. sparks flying in your chest and burning. her lips moved softly against yours yet just a little too hard. but it didn’t matter. you just kissed your girlfriend for the first time.
the flash went off and little music started playing as it put the pictures the two of you got on display. you pulled away, staring at your girlfriends kiss bitten lips and drunkened eyes. you smiled, looked away knowing she was still staring, and watched the screen.
