I really do think The Boys demonstrates the limits of making edgelord gross-out media because all the space for horrifying ramifications of say—a character like Homelander being both the most politically and physically powerful person in the country while also being completely off the rails mentally— or furthering themes that have been set up over time, or exploring a lot of the parallels that exist between different characters on the show is taken up; time, energy, and screentime gets diverted to scenes intended to make the audience go "ew" or be like "oh my god that's a dick"

and when being the "highly gross and inappropriate" show is The schtick that you're known for, you have to spend a lot of effort on outdoing yourself with every new chapter that maybe could've been devoted somewhere else

like I actually have very little objection to The Boys being a dark comedy because there's a lot of humor in just how absurd some events turn out and how some of the most evil ppl ever are as dumb as a rock. Like the Deep has killed and hurt so many people to get close to Homelander and yet he doesn't know where the Bering Sea is.

But also for all its effort to be like gross, there's not enough three-dimensional darkness. For example, Soldier Boy says out of pocket shit all the time but we don't get to see him idk.. DO much? Don't get me wrong the grumpy-old-man thing is well executed! Jensen Ackles is a funny guy! But he should absolutely be more terrifying! We are talking about a guy who killed numerous people by flinging one (1) car through a building at high speeds. We are talking about a radioactive guy with PTSD, anger problems stemming from before said trauma, damn near Every Single 20th Century Prejudice, the need to go on power trips, AND the actual upgraded ability to carry them out! that's fucking terrifying!!! We get 1 scene where he's killing Mindstorm with the shield, we get the aftermath of his nuclear blast and that's it. It's fucking fascinating that he has these random moments where he's got this palpable guilt over his own actions but that's not squared with anything else he does, it's just left as this vague idk-it-comes-from-somewhere thing.

We could get more MM plot? or A-Train? or the gen-V crew? or like those supe patrols offhandedly mentioned by other characters? or whatever's in Sage's notebook? Or something! idk i'm just running my mouth here!

lowkey, not a great penultimate episode; as in, this feels like the strong halfway point of a 13 episode season and not the second to last ever episode

but my favorite part of this ep (maybe this season? idk) is that it really established MM as someone who has spent his whole life giving a fuck about other people and is really not ashamed about that at all. despite everything, he still decides it's worth it. like at some point the "guy with contamination ocd gets exposed to gross thing" joke gets a bit played out and I'm glad that we get to see him be defined by his choice to continue caring despite all the fucked up stuff that's happened to him and not just by traumatizing events and suspicious fluids

soldier boy and bombsight's interactions were so insanely loaded I can't tell if I'm being baited or if they were just super serious about the beef...

like Soldier Boy? objectively shitty person who does what he wants on his terms always. he will listen if he thinks it'll benefit him but he doesn't really listen to people outright begging. we know this. he could've just killed Bombsight and taken the V1 off his body and fulfilled his end of the deal; and yet this guy said "Ben, stop. Please" and he ACTUALLY STOPPED??

just to have a whole convo where they're like.. legit honest and real with each other for a sec and then to end that specific convo what feels like a really deflective "I really fucking hate you" from Soldier Boy?
