The way Touhou fandom hates Okina is insane. If any fanwork with her ever gets popular, it's because it's making fun of her in some way. Always portraying her as incompetent and useless, oh she doesn't do anything! Oh in HSiFS she was just fucking around and in VFiS she was picking a fight with fairies and in SHoSS she just hired Flandre to do everything because she is too weak to face Yuuma herself lol! Just admit you don't play the games or read any official works and get all information from the wiki and fan bullshit, because there is no way you could be misinterpreting her actions this badly if you were actually paying attention.

Always making her out to be inferior/weaker than Yukari, jealous of her or being a pathetic desperate ex. Or making her predatory, which is something that fans have done to every older woman in Touhou, but Okina seems to get the worst of it. Or the non stop ableist jokes where other characters steal or break her wheelchair or other mobility aids, because it's soooo funny to humiliate and physically hurt a disabled character if they're kind of a bad person, right? And the worst part is when it's coming from people who think they're so feminist and leftist and totally not like those 4channers and redditors, but laugh at the same jokes and perpetuate the same kind of misogyny, racism and ableism as they do.

your orin hits such a precise middle point between uncanny and cute. i'm impressed (and scared)

thank you!! it's an aspect i see in a lot of the traditional portrayals of youkai and i try to achieve a similar vibe in my touhou designs too this was my first take on her, but it was kinda giving basic skullcat furry design lol

it leans more into cute, and i wanted her to be a bit more gruesome - underworld youkai don't have that many reasons to look appealing to humans

Love your okiyuma art a metric tonne so I'm just mildly curious as to ur take on the Okina having naturally black hair lore.

'Somewhat insecure about being blonde' Okina is pretty funny though.

tysm! If we’re talking canon Okina, ZUN's answer felt almost in character as her, like she 100% would deflect a question about her flaws with a nonsensical answer about her hair (though I think that wasn’t his intention lol)

I almost wish she was designed with black hair in the first place, it looks so nice with her color scheme

As for my version of Okina, the hair thing fits really well with my pre-existing headcanon about her connection to Hata no Kawakatsu. It’s a whole thing but in short she sort of “possessed” him at some point, and then even after she released him, a fragment got stuck in her mind; something like an imprint/a manifestation of his grudge. Even though she mentally supressed that fragment, somehow he still subconsciously messes everything up any time she remakes her body (that is why she has prosthetic arms, legs, and eyes too). Being aware of her preference for black hair, he makes it blond. It can’t be dyed because it doesn’t have the same structure as human hair, and any attempts to alter the color through magic are slowly reversed, to her chagrin
