ok so why are you so anti makeup?
i’m going to paraphrase a LOT of things here, but mostly because it’s a commodity, controlled by men (i.e., men are the ones benefiting from and making money off of this industry, but, like, what else is new?), used to keep women subjugated, insecure, and with their wallets open and ready.
it’s like, how many women do you know who feel they can’t leave the house without a face full of makeup? it’s become such a norm for women to have this routine of various EXPENSIVE products they must apply to be a member of society- and repercussions if they don’t. (Like, women who won’t leave the house without makeup. I’ve seen women describe their ‘lazy’ days by throwing on some lipgloss and eyeliner, saying that like it’s easy, when i’ve known men who roll out of bed and don’t even run a brush through their hair.)
like, young girls are literally being inducted into this culture of, like, having to spend hundreds of dollars on this makeup just so they can leave the house looking socially acceptable with a beat face (like, foundation and concealer and a contour and eye makeup and clean, precise eyeliner, perfect eyebrows, and what have you). and then when they don’t conform, they’re ostracized and ridiculed. like, girls are called out for having ‘sloppy wings’ or ‘ugly brows’ and, like, isn’t that tiring? to be forced to spend your youth thinking of ways to cover up your features because you’ve been told everything about your face is fundamentally an imperfection that can be improved by the use of some product
like, women are literally torturing themselves to meet these beauty standards and then at some point, somehow, the industry manages to twist our arms and it says, “hey! wear red lipstick to show men how confident you are! make your eyeliner sharp enough to kill a man! this consumerism- it’s a choice! we are empowering you!” and then it got pushed as this feminist thing with ‘blowjob proof’ lipstick and mascara, the consumption of makeup now becoming, to the delight of the industry and the men in charge, i’m sure, this radical act of self care! weaponized femininity has become something to appeal to men- suffer for your womanhood!! why not wear some heels while you’re at it?
like the entire thing- it’s so insidious, to force women into this place where they can’t be comfortable showing themselves in public, because even ‘natural’ looks entail a completely smooth face and like, subtle, dewy bullshit…i’ve kind of gone off on a tailspin here but. TDLR: because the industry is evil and no matter how many layers of ‘it’s a choice’ and ‘some women find it empowering,’ it’s never really been a choice, and there’s nothing about this industry that gives a fuck about the well being of its consumers
