Black is a colour associated with death, darkness, insecurity, famine. But under the dark persona, there are stronger characters like power, formality, leadership and professionalism.
Black is one of the most complex colours, holding so much symbolism and weight in different cultures. Within the UK, black is a sollem colour, often worn to funerals, showing grief, and death, however in places such as Africa, it symbolises age, masculinity and maturity. In the Middle East, it is a symbol of rebirth, but also retaining the strong sense of mourning. As a complete opposite, in China, it is a colour for young boys, and promotes prosperity and good health. In Japan, it symbolizes feminine energy and mystery.
Black is the only colour with a strong following in multiple scenes, with Gothic styles being prominent in art, fashion, writing and music. Clothing genres and styles revolving around the colour black can be seen as Gothic, or Punk, and while these archetypes have sometimes negative connotations, they’re seen as rebellious and powerful.
Black is a bold colour, seeing anyone in such a colour immediately provokes different thoughts, but it all depends on how they present themselves. A woman in a sleek black suit, a boy in a denim jacket and ripped jeans, a girl in an elaborate dress. Each one provokes different thoughts and feelings towards the person in view.
