Raven enjoyed barn hunt practice. She thought the rat in the tube was stupid when she could just tell us about the rat in a cage!

A Year With Raven
A bit late in posting this, but better late than never.
Raven is my first West Siberian Laika, and she’s been a blast to live with and learn from. Since puppyhood she has been bold, curious, friendly, and ACTIVE. Always on the move.
She settles amazingly in her crate or out of it (especially if she can lay down and window watch on the couch or bed). For a while she was intrigued by squirrels, but didn’t tree well. Around seven months and entering adolescence a switch turned and she’s been very focused and determined on treeing whatever she can.
I’ve learned that I hate the Laika bark unless she’s actually treeing something. Her shrilly echoing coyote yips don’t sound very pleasant when she sees a squirrel from the window. LOL
But ultimately she’s been a rock solid dog. Can assess situations, determine what seems right and what is sketchy and has acted appropriately in both instances. Raven is absolutely a thinker, the gears always turning. While she is excellently receptive in training, this dog is also independent and a wonderful problem solver - rarely does she actually need our help to figure out something.
Now that she’s UKC registered and getting older, I’m excited to get her into conformation, rally obedience, and complete her temperament test. When she’s two we’ll get her ready for OFAs on her thyroid, hips, and elbows. But her first year or so of life has been focused mainly on FUN, as I believe it should be.
She runs, plays, hikes, trains, and has enjoyed being a puppy. Now she’s in her first heat, getting to chill and enjoy some quality time with us.
The WSL community here in the US doesn’t really believe in thorough health testing and such, and many throw whoever together if they hunt well. But I really appreciate Raven’s breeder and I love how she’s turning out. Our baby girl!
Yesterday was Raven’s 1st birthday! I will be compiling a proper post in a bit.
