And for all she was young still, the world had nonetheless changed since her birth. It was changing still; every year brought them all further and further down the inexorable path of destiny. Every year brought new choices made, new designs in the tapestry which could not be unwoven. It was traditional to bequeath gifts to a dragon on the anniversary of its hatch-day. But Meilinoe had never been particularly traditional. "Brutus," she called, and Kyrakios’ familiar came to her from his perch in a nearby tree. "Take Persephone," she said, as the bird tilted its head, its many eyes regarding her, "and find for me clans that are worthy…worthy of receiving gifts."
