today we saw our second daeron targaryen of 2026 who is introduced as a nameless character whose identity is only revealed in a later episode and whose family don't know where he is and who is involved in a plot involving changing a person's trademark targaryen silver hair while he himself has his non-targaryen mother's hair color
daenerys is sick and burnt and starving, arya and sansa and bran are being manipulated by their evil teachers, jaime is being led to his doom and brienne is forced to lead him there, cersei and margaery are awaiting trial, loras is dying on dragonstone, tyrion and barristan and victarion are in the midst of a giant battle, aegon and the golden company are in the middle of an invasion, sam is about to get attacked by an evil wizard pirate, aeron is being tortured by said evil wizard pirate, stannis and theon and asha and jeyne are freezing to death, davos is headed to cannibal island... meanwhile jon has been lying in the snow for 14 years 🙄 lazy bum
the episode beginning with alicent telling rhaenyra that sending daeron away was her greatest act of motherhood and it ending with ormund forcing daeron to execute an innocent man...it doesn't matter that she sent him away, she can't save him. SO good.
anyway when i saw tessarion with the candles in the sept i immediately was attracted to the imagery and thought it was going to be an interesting scene about the struggle between the biggest relics of valyrian magic and the faith of the seven and how they exist in contrast to or alongside one another that rhaenyra and orwyle were talking about earlier in the episode and which we also saw a bit with the dragonkeepers policing who can ride dragons last season... instead we got whatever that was!
how many times are we gonna begin at this point. we've been beginning since s1 e10 lmaoooo
going from not mentioning daeron in a single breath for all of season 1 and most of season 2 to now have a plot revolve around trying to make him king is pretty insane. we've now given up on it being a targaryen civil war and opened a third theater in the targaryens vs. hightowers war. odd decisions all around
he seemed to have grown as of late, as if Bran's fall and his mother's collapse had somehow made him stronger.

the dialogue and exposition this episode, especially in the first half, was really terrible and clunky—the scene with rhaenyra, alicent, and helaena had so little emotion to it, it felt like it was just them all trading basic information and didn't seem in line at all with how i expected alicent and rhaenyra to treat each other after the final scene in the throne room last episode. very tell not show. is this a result of the script for this episode being intended as the season opener where they were meant to refresh the audience as to what went on last season? the choices really don't make sense for a third episode
i can only wonder at the psychosexual things daemon's brain is cooking up as he sleeps in the king's bed—which previously belonged to his brother and grandfather—with his niece/wife in his arms

i'm not usually one to really care about battle sequences and i always think the dragons—though great cgi—look a little bit silly, but i absolutely loved the scene of vhagar and aemond taking harrenhal. i loved that we finally got to see the castle in full (those towers!) and the contrast between the darkness of vhagar and the stone and the bright red of the fire was really dramatic. love that they very obviously visually and thematically compared it to daemon's solo entrance in the rain last season, which was also very memorable! the show does a great job at capturing the bleakness and eeriness of harrenhal
