Fat in Pet Food: Friend or Foe?
Fat is one of the most important components of a pet's diet. It is the most digestible source of energy for dogs and cats, providing more than twice the energy per gram compared to proteins or carbohydrates. Not only is fat highly palatable, but it also supports a variety of critical physiological functions, including:

In human nutrition, fats are often categorized as "good" or "bad." However, dogs and cats metabolize fats differently from humans. They can tolerate relatively high amounts of both saturated and unsaturated fats without experiencing the cardiovascular risks associated with these fats in humans.
Instead, pets use a process called beta-oxidation, which uses oxygen to break down fats and generate energy to fuel metabolic functions. For this reason, it’s more useful in pet nutrition to classify fats as either facilitative or functional.
Facilitative fats primarily serve to increase the caloric density of a pet’s diet. This supports energy requirements, growth, and reproduction. Facilitative fats also improve the palatability and texture of pet food, making it more appealing.
In addition, dietary fat is essential for the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins in the small intestine. Bile salts emulsify fats into smaller droplets, allowing lipase enzymes to break them down into forms that the body can absorb and use.
Highly active dogs, such as working or sporting breeds, benefit from diets with higher fat content, as fat is a dense energy source that supports sustained activity and endurance.
Functional fats include essential fatty acids such as omega-3 and omega-6, which play critical roles in regulating inflammation, immune responses, cognitive function, and skin health.
Omega-6 fatty acids are precursors to signaling molecules called eicosanoids, which promote inflammation. While inflammation may sound negative, it is important for immune defense, blood clotting, and normal cell growth.
Linoleic Acid (LA): Supports skin health, cell membrane integrity, and growth. Found in plant oils, seeds, and poultry.
Arachidonic Acid (AA): Necessary for inflammatory responses, cellular defense, and tissue healing. Found in poultry, meat, fish, and eggs.
Omega-3 fatty acids influence hormone production and immune function. They act in opposition to omega-6 fatty acids, helping to reduce excessive inflammation.
Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA): A powerful anti-inflammatory fatty acid and a precursor to DHA. Found in oily fish.

Since dogs and cats cannot synthesize omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids on their own, these must be provided through their diet. An optimal ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 is approximately 5:1. However, an excess of omega-6 can disrupt this balance and contribute to chronic inflammation, which is associated with conditions such as allergies, arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease.
It’s important to recognize that not all fats are equal. The healthiest fats for dogs and cats are raw fats from animal and fish sources. These fresh, unrendered fats provide a natural and nutritious source of energy.
In contrast, fats in dry pet food are exposed to high temperatures and pressure during processing. This exposure accelerates oxidation, causing fats to become rancid. Oxidized fats generate free radicals, which contribute to inflammation and oxidative stress throughout the body.
Rancid fats also reduce the food's nutritional quality. To slow down oxidation in dry foods, manufacturers often add antioxidants. Common synthetic antioxidants include BHA and BHT, while natural alternatives may include mixed tocopherols or specific vitamins such as vitamin C.
While synthetic antioxidants are inexpensive and widely used, natural antioxidants are generally better suited for pets. However, natural options don’t provide the same level of protection against lipid oxidation as synthetic ones.
Raw diets, on the other hand, avoid this issue entirely. Because raw food is fresh and stored frozen, it doesn’t require stabilizing antioxidants. Instead, it naturally contains vitamins that act as antioxidants, helping to neutralize free radicals in the body.
While fresh fat is a valuable source of energy, not all pets require high-fat diets. Animals that are overweight or have certain health conditions, such as pancreatitis, should consume leaner proteins instead.
For example, adding fattier proteins like turkey to lean meats such as rabbit or venison can help ensure a diet meets the required fat content for energy and nutrient absorption.
