ASSESSMENT 2 - ANIMATIC

SUMMARY:-

A mysterious cyclone carries Dorothy’s soul into the mysterious and haunting Land of Oz - the land of the dead. Desperate to return to the world of the living, she seeks help from the Wizard of Oz with fellow souls that seek their own salvation. Together, they set to return to the world of the living while escaping the Wicked Witch of the West, who seeks to collect as many souls as possible to resurrect her dead sister. The film is a 2D Tim Burton-inspired horror fantasy.

SCENE:-

Dorothy and her friends must follow the glowing path through the haunted forest, a place that may just literally consume your soul. Nothing here is as it seems.

SCRIPTING.

When I first received this assignment, I knew that I wanted a haunting, eerie atmosphere in my animatic. I could roughly imagine what I wanted the final product to look and feel like, but struggled to get started on storyboard thumbnails. All of my attempts came off as very unpolished and lacking visual coherence.

Then upon learning that the animatic was to be made to a pre-recorded soundtrack, I decided to type up my own script for the soundtrack. I typed down the scene occurring as I imagined it in my head. When I use the script in my work, I tried to format and use correct abbreviations.

Creating this animatic really challenged and forced me to view, in the process, I try to not always use the camera in the Storyboard Pro, I try to change the layers to play with my animation works. construct and analyse each and every frame from a creator’s perspective. Many hours of work went into the final product, which while flawed, I am very pleased with.

For me, writing a script really helped me develop a more definite idea of what I wanted my final product to be. Drawing thumbnails really helped me visualise and plan not only the visual appearance of the scene, but how it would also flow.

I ended up redrawing many scenes to add more interesting perspectives, angles, and character motivation behind movements and reactions. When drawing the first draft, it was so easy to assume that audiences would be able to understand why sequences occurred a certain way. However, it was pointed out to me that everything in a thumbnail/animatic should be there to serve a purpose.

FINAL REFLECTION

I was surprised by how much change was applied to this project in every little stage. Creating this animatic really challenged and forced me to view, construct and analyse each and every frame from a creator’s perspective. Many hours of work went into the final product, which while flawed, I am very pleased with. The final product has succeeded in portraying a dark, eerie atmosphere, and making the characters look and feel very vulnerable in the environment of the haunted forest. I look forward to applying the knowledge I gained doing this project to other creative projects.
