Oh!!!! Conflict between Jake and Cassie! Oh yeah.
(End of book 41 ch 1, Jake has just closed the garage door behind Marco and Rachel -- his best friend and Cassie's -- so that the rest of them can get away. After Marco told him to. Rather than going for the more conventionally heroic "we don't leave anyone behind" approach. And Cassie doesn't approve.)
"Lose everyone, or lose two?"
Ah yeah, it's a Jake book, theme: leadership.
You know, Animorphs is really different from a lot of kids' media. Kids' media tends to be very moralistic. The most moral choice is the right one, the one that will work out. Animorphs is in its own way very moral oriented, but the moral is "yeah, sometimes people don't have good options, and picking a bad options is all that's left. If you've been there? It wasn't your fault that you didn't have better options."
Which I think is appropriate! Sometimes kids are in "no good options" situations, and need that mirrored in fiction. Sometimes getting an outside "yes, that's real and it's messed up" is life saving.
I think Star Trek (original series) must have been a big influence on Animorphs. The big scope. The godlike aliens. The tendency towards kitchen sink sci fi (this episode we have time travel, this episode we have a new alien species, this episode we have shapeshifting, this episode we have a parallel universe) and towards being unapologetically in the soft end of the hard/soft sci fi spectrum.
I'm thinking the in medias reas starts are also a very common Trek thing, but then, they're also a common everything thing.

I do prefer the insta action openings over two paragraphs of exposition. It was fine the first ten or so times, but I'm glad we've moved onto something different.

I notice a pattern in the series: having a POV character who is put in a situation where the opposite of their main thing comes out.
Jake, the leader, being helpless. Rachel, the "let's do it" one, feeling afraid or just wanting out of the whole thing. Cassie doing something ruthless.
(And Ax having to act against his people. I can't think of a good example for Tobias offhand. I love the scene in The Predator (I think? The one where he thinks a family member has shown up) where his habitual expressionlessness from being a hawk saves him, but that's a different thing.)
Or Marco, the cautious, anxious one, doing something brave bordering on reckless.
I'm thinking both him flying too close to the greenhouse (for no particular reason, really) and again mouthing off to Gafinilan while in an extremely vulnerable position.
It provides complexity.

Kids' books have gross-out scenes in place of sex scenes.
In book 2, they morphed ants, which went horribly. In book i want to say 9 maybe, one of the Cassie ones, they morphed termites and it went even worse.
So now, obviously, it's time for bees.
I'm sure nothing will go wrong.
I wasn't expecting Marco of all people to call someone out on ableism.
*snort* the animorphs conveniently forgetting that they attacked first.
I don't think this Gafinilan likes Visser 3. When he got attacked by a random hawk, he assumed the Andalite he saw was Visser 3. They are not friends. And unless Gafinilan is one hell of a liar...he doesn't know what Visser 3 looks like.
But it's possible he has been keeping tabs on the "Andalite bandits" and knew plenty about them before he saw Marco demorph.
Which we're now worried about all of a sudden, as though Cassie didn't morph right there on the stairs of the Yeerk pool back in book 1.
I like how we're getting an Andalite-centric story from someone else's perspective.
Animorphs 40: The Other
When the kids have gotten to the point that not only do they assume a strange (not Visser 3) Andalite is a threat, but they attack on sight, without even trying to talk first.
How's the war going?
I guess you could say I kind of like Cassie.
Yep, essence of middle schooler has been achieved.
Sometimes we sit together on the bus, even though I never know what to say to her.
The delightful not-really-dating-ness of sometimes sitting together on the bus and wanting to have a conversation but having no idea how.
I do actually kind of appreciate that we don't really have dating drama in the sense of not really having love triangles or "these two characters were dating for a while and then they broke up and now this one's dating this other person". We have two "couples" within the Animorphs, the attraction is mutual, and it doesn't change over the series. (As far as I'm aware.) I'm not sure whether that is realistic for middle schoolers, but eh, don't care.

Hmm. Given Marco's home situation, how much do you want to bet that's Jake running out of quarters and generously pretending that they've both been contributing?
I'm writing this all down so that more people will learn the truth. Maybe then, somehow, the human race can survive until the Andalites return and rescue us, as they promised they would.
Damn, I forgot the series flat out started this way. The Andalites are coming back to save us. Right? Right???
